CALL for ENTRIES: Abstract II

Learn more about Abstract II from art-competition.net!DOUBLE
garden duty

We all eat massive amounts of corn.  Since my husband’s Celiac diagnosis, we are a gluten-free household, and it took a lot of work.  But, now it is second nature and, really, no big deal.  But corn?  If I had to try to cut corn out of our diets, we would starve; it is in EVERYTHING.  In 2012, the USDA claimed 88% of U.S. corn is GMO.  I’m not okay with that, so we are planning an attempt to grow our own soon.  Meanwhile, did you know that corn does excellent double duty as a trellis for growing peas?  Plus, the peas supply much-need nitrogen to the soil for the corn.  Don’t you just love nature?  It is in the nature of this next Call to offer DOUBLE the prizes. Make us proud…

The artist’s work can be the “abstracting of representational objects” as in expressionistic, surrealistic or cubistic work. “Pure abstraction” is also accepted where there is little to no visual references of the external world.

“Abstraction allows man to see with his mind what he cannot see physically with his eyes…. Abstract art enables the artist to perceive beyond the tangible, to extract the infinite out of the finite. It is the emancipation of the mind. It is an exploration into unknown areas.” — Arshile Gorky

BOUQUET

Are you eating flowers?  I do occasionally, but only when I can buy them directly from the grower or grow them myself due to pesticides.  One of my favorite edible blooms, second only to zucchini blossoms, may be sweet violets.  I like to make a simple syrup infused with violets then make a subtle glaze for sugar cookies or a vinegar for a salad of bitter greens.  The next time you’re at the Farmer’s Market, consider the flowers edible too. Red is undeniably my favorite color.  I find myself drawn to red tones in food, from salmon to cherry Jell-o, Bloody Mary’s to pomegranates.  Go figure.  But recently I tripped across golden raspberries.  How had I missed them all these years?  They are slightly sweeter & milder than the traditional red variety, and I am willing to admit that I like them better in some instances.  I feel like such a traitor.  The next Call is the perfect red celebration.  I like this group exhibit…

I seek out Greek food.  I don’t have access to Greek food at home, except my husband’s exceptional version of Moussaka, so I’m always on the hunt.  I have noticed a rather odd phenomenon–Greek food crossed with diner culture.  I keep seeing menu after menu with both platters of fries AND bowls of Avgolemono.  Sometimes it is great to expect to get one thing but find yourself with options when you take a closer look.  I suppose this next Call is exactly like that.  Take a look…
