I struggle with self-doubt like every artist, like every person.  I struggle with balance and/or learning to live with imbalance.  I want peace and tranquility, but lack the self-control to say “no” often enough to allow time for the peace.  I find myself annoyed by the gospel of “busy” but fulfilling the stereotype repeatedly.  Art is the exception.  Art prompts but stills me, makes things clearer.

The mixed-media collage work today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, Laura Lein-Svencner gave me a little perspective today, helped me weigh options.  Pause for just a moment…

I’m such a fan of found-object assemblage, trash art & recycled materials.  I understand the debate over archival materials, and I embrace a movement toward outdoor ephemeral sculpture in parks and outside museums & universities.  However, I do often find my self frustrated when an artist chooses to use a recycled materia regardless of of whether it really works.  I don’t like the gimmick of it all.  But the sculptural work of today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, Dimosthenis Prodromou finds itself at one with newsprint.  If feels like a natural progression of the paper’s lifecycle.  It appears both solid, but soft & light.   A ready-made pallet…

ARTIST of the DAY: Vivienne Strauss

When I came home from the hospital with my bouncing baby boy so many years ago, I found a bottle of cold duck in my fridge –a gift from my mother.  Not champagne.  Cold Duck.  This particular variety was a blend of port & champagne.  I never asked her why, and I’ve never had it since.  But, after a pregnancy free from alcohol for both myself and my husband, it only took a glass a piece to make us a little giddy and able to let go of the fears and stress of being a new parent, if only for an hour or so.  It is a fond, silly memory that I treasure.  When I came across this work of today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, Vivienne Strauss, it put a smile on my face.  The perfect complement. A self-taught painter with a background in Philosophy, Vivienne Strauss works predominately in oil and watercolor. Her paintings often migrating around the humor of being human – shared dejection, things left unsaid, false arrogance, disbelief, inspired irony. She is an observer and chronicler, in the actual world in which she exists and in the world of characters she creates, exposing, with precise wit, the subterranean elements lying in wait beneath the deceptively quotidian.

Food as medicine has been on my radar for a decade.  I appreciate the ability to attempt home remedies through food and supplements.  I am not suggesting it is easier, nor am I suggestion it is a solution for all ailments.  But, I am intrigued.  A family history of arthritis, combined with years of a slight addiction to towering high heels, has resulted in massive joint pain in one of feet.  Flair ups are completely manageable with a combination of tart cherries & massive quantities of vitamin C.  Drug-resistant pediatric epilepsy is now often treated by mainstream medicine with a ketogenic diet.  The collaboration between doctors and nutritionists is inspiring. I believe the concept of “edible” is abstract, not just subjective.  Technically, anything that doesn’t kill you is edible.  Well, really, you can still eat things that WILL kill you.  So, I suppose if you are physically able to consume something, it is edible.  So, maybe the notion of “eatability” is the abstract one.  Why would someone pay a fortune to eat a fertilized duck egg?  Because they are yummy? Doubtful.  But, the precedent for eating eggs and eating ducks has been set, so I understand why it would occur to someone to try.  But coconut?  Green or furry, how did someone look at a coconut and say, “let’s eat one”?  Abstract.  This next Call is also purely abstract.  Take a look…

We’re on snow day THREE here in the Smokies.   I love snow.  I love lots of snow, in fact.  But, the stark isolationism associated with snow is not lost on me.  Today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, Anastassia Elias seemed the ideal person to illustrate this issue.   It is a very small world …and getting smaller everyday. “When I first started to work with collage (in 2012) I really got attached to the method. With collage I am allowed to work fast and the pictures I create are more likely a sketch of an idea then an in all details finished picture. I only use pictures from the Internet. So the online-voyeurism becomes an inspiration to me. In such a way my work grasps a larger ground. It becomes a debate about rights and licenses, about privacy and commons, about ownership and laws. The collages always oscillate between visual and legal borders.” — Julia Geiser

I live amongst the big trees, copious wildlife and dizzying views of the Great Smoky Mountains.  Nature HERE seems rough and rugged and and indomitable. It is easy to forget the delicate wonder and our responsibility to protect it.  Nothing could be clearer in the work of Anne ten Donkelaar, today’s Artist of the Day. (continues below)

“Weeds become poetry, each unique twig gets attention,
nature seems to float.” 

“A damaged butterfly, a broken twig, a bumblebee, some strangely grown weeds: I find all these unique discoveries in my path and then take them home to my studio. Here, I take my time to explore the objects and try to work out how I can show each one to it’s best advantage. My finds inspire me.
