At times I feel my life is laid bare before the world. Because I don’t have faith in the existence of privacy and an excessive desire to control my surroundings, I have beaten everyone to the punch. I have revealed almost everything to be known about me. Those few crumbs I have kept for myself are dark corners best left unexamined by most. But if Sima Schloss, today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, is right about love, despair & danger, I have nowhere to hide. I am oddly relieved. What are you not trying to hide?

The weirdness of my lunch is directly proportional to how badly I don’t want to go to the grocery store. I spend most of my working hours in my home office/studio. As a result, my work clothing standards are sometimes (often) not how I’d like to be seen in public. So to avoid the extra work of dressing and driving and shopping, I create food collages of sorts –often disparate ingredients composed into pasta salads, casseroles & almost anything sauteed & stuffed into a corn tortilla. I have a secret love for rapini. You may know it as broccoli raab or broccoletti. People assume it is just fancy broccoli and often cook it that way, hence the reason I hide my love of it (until now). Rapini is more closely related to a turnip than broccoli with the same tendency toward bitterness or stringy-ness if under cooked or overcooked. Don’t ever buy, cook or serve rapini that isn’t a gorgeous shade of green. (You won’t enjoy the yellow, trust me.) Don’t under cook it or spare the garlic & olive oil. Her recent projects include exhibitions on the whaling scenes of Joseph Mallord, William Turner and on The Met’s collection of Pre ‐ Raphaelite art and design. She publishes and lectures on topics ranging from Impressionist painting to Symbolist drawing, and was previously a juror for the National Arts Club’s Artist Members Exhibition.

Pineapples are showing up in mass at every grocer right now. I can’t eat enough to take advantage of the availability, so I was contemplating making jelly or jam. As you may know, pineapple fights the jelling process, so you have to use nearly twice as much pectin to make it work –which defeats the purpose of buying on sale. Maybe I can freeze the cleaned pineapple and wait for gooseberries come into season. These little treasures have huge amounts of pectin and can be made into jelly without ANY additional pectin.
