FREAKY & FRUITY

With rare exception, I am not a fan of fruit and meat combinations.  Keep your pineapple off my pizza and out of my stirfry.  Lemons and limes are acceptable, and figs and plums are only allowed in Mediterranean food.  While I don’t care to mix my food groups sometimes, mixed media in artwork is a different story.  This Call gives you an opportunity to show your best mixed media work (or collage and digital).  Don’t miss this opportunity for artist representation too!

Check out this Call for Entries from Upstream People Gallery for the 13th Annual Collage, Digital & Mixed Media Juried Online Art Exhibition.  I am not crazy about entering every online show that comes along, but if you are looking for quality online gallery representation, this Call comes with a full year of representation.  Bonus:  only 20% commission!  Take a look…

*Editor’s Note:  I am sorry, Dave. 🙂  If you look at the comments on the CultureHall post, I assured him that I would take it easy on the online gallery calls.  But, this one was already written… and a year of representation with really low commission will work for some of you…

CALL for ENTRIES: Postmarked 2011

Learn more about the 7th Annual Mail Art Show! For many years, inmates from around the country wrote to the Prison Library Project and they were amazed by the artwork that accompanied requests for books. These beautiful illustrations were their inspiration for a mail art exhibition and fundraiser.

Postmarked was developed seven years ago for the Claremont Forum’s Prison Library Project, which sends books free to prisoners in the U.S. upon their request. Providing education and opportunity to learn about mail art, view new and established mail artists’ works, and to participate in the experience of creating and sending mail art. Now in its 7th year, this exhibition is one of the largest in California.

Learn more about the 7th Annual Mail Art Show!ELIGIBILITY: Open to all.

WHY SUPPORT the PLP? “Rehabilitation was at one time a stated goal of the prison system. Today, funding for most educational and rehabilitation programs, including prison libraries, has been cut or completely eliminated. It is a distressing fact that today’s U.S. prisons are increasingly about punishing people and warehousing human beings, not about, rehabilitation, or education.”

“This is where PLP steps in. We believe that everyone deserves access to literature and educational materials, including people trying to work towards social change, self-empowerment or rehabilitation within the incarceration system.

Learn more about the 7th Annual Mail Art Show! The U.S. has less than 5 percent of the world’s population, but more than a quarter of the world’s prisoners.

Nearly one percent of American adults are incarcerated, the highest rate in the world, but many prisoners have little access to books or educational material. They face substantial barriers and are cut off from family and friends on the outside. While some prisons have libraries, many do not. Of those that do, access and selection can be extremely limited. Usually, prisoners are not allowed to receive books from friends or family. Thus, programs like ours are one of the few options available to these individuals.” –from the PLP website.

TOE-MAY-TOE
TOE-MAH-TOE

I absolutely love heirloom vegetables. I love the idea of preserving the genetic “bloodline,” if you will, of a fruit or vegetable easily distinguished from the genetically modified, hot-house varieties we are all used to eating.  However, I can admit that sometimes a tomato is just a tomato.  This next call recognizes that sometimes art is just art.  They don’t want your CV, resume, statment or anything else–just your art.

Check out this Open Call from the WW Gallery for the Venice Biennale.  Here’s your chance to get a London show based on merit.  The deadline is rapidly approaching but you can email your entry!  Take a look…

I typically only post once per day.  Any more smacks of double-dipping of your time and inbox space.  I get notified everytime someone unsubscribes from this blog, and I am sincerely sorry when I found out that an artist has decided that AAAD isn’t something they want or need or have time for.  So, I am self-conscious about double-dipping… except in ice cream, of course.

So why double-dip today?  Well, I am also self-conscious about straying too far from bringing you the art deadlines and opportunities that are the whole purpose of this blog.  Last Monday I posted a housekeeping blog, earlier this morning I posted the Artist of the Year blog, and tommorrow I unveil the first Featured Artist of 2011.  That is three non-deadline posts in 8 days.  I just have to break it up with a little opportunity!

Check out this Art Contest from tailcast.com, a print-on-demand greeting card site, that allows you to design and sell a Valentine’s day card online.  There is no entry fee, and you could win $300+ and 20% commission on card sales.  Take a look!

Can you make them
happen with a card?

This is the challenge for you at tailcast. This time tailcast want designs to give butterflies or goose bumps and make recipients chuckle, giggle and grin knowingly on Valentine’s day.

I’m told the Super Bowl is in January.  I say, “I’m told” because a football would have to hit me square between the eyes to make me aware of when the season begins or ends for any sport.  Yep, I’m just not that girl.  Interestingly enough, the idea of the Super Bowl does conjure image of very specific foods for me despite the fact that I’ve never been to a Super Bowl party.  Hmmmm… Chicken Wings anyone?

This next Call for Entries is for the Scroll Bowl V sponsored by Magazine 22.  The only similarity between this Call for the Scroll Bowl V and the Super Bowl?  They are both in January and both have Bowl in the name, but I had to start somewhere, eh? *Editor’s note:  4 hours after this post went live, the venue and date changed.  See edits below noted in green italics…

CALL for ENTRIES:  Scroll Bowl V

Submit to Scroll Bowl V today!

SCROLL BOWL V will be the featured event at The 22 Magazine Launch Party, on April 2nd, 2011.  Harnessing the ancient power of scroll storytelling, some of world’s finest creators gather to show off their work on large and small rolls of parchment.  Scroll art is one of the oldest forms of storytelling, and the folks at The 22 Magazine want to make the experience of viewing a scroll more accessible to everyday life.

Check out the Scrollie Viewer on YouTube!MEDIA:  There are many different ways to approach art on scrolls, and they ask artists to push those limits-linear storytelling to abstract ideas.

Larger format works are shown on their huge SCROLLIE VIEWER, but they also appreciate smaller format or long scrolls that hang on the wall.  Solo, group collaborations, video or performance pieces are acceptable.  How each artist attacks the “page” is what makes these events fun.

WHERE:  The Scroll Bowl V will take place at Frost Street Art Space in Williamsburg (Brooklyn), an exciting new gallery and screening venue that provides live online streaming of events!  Click here for videos of the space.

From the organizers:  “What this [change of venue] means for the artists is 1) A week long show instead of one night  2) documentation of the actual event via 4-7 installed cameras  3) live streaming of the event online and  4) more space and much nicer venue. ”

Submit to Scroll Bowl V today!HOW TO SUBMIT:  All submissions (in the form of images or links) can be sent to the22magazine@gmail.com. Please put “SCROLL BOWL SUBMISSION” in the subject line.

FEATURED ARTIST: Catherine Roach

Click here to see all the work of Catherine Roach!I have a treat for you today…

the work of Catherine Roach.

I love art.  My home and office are filled to the brim with the work of artists that I love.  And, while I have a significant appreciation for the talent it takes to produce realism, I prefer not to own it.

I want the artwork I own to inspire me to dream of what can be, not what already is.  Admittedly, that is my personal choice.

I am a fan of modern Romanticism in art and artists.  I own work that leads with the heart and confronts it in a cerebral way.  I like the idea of the gifted hero following inspired creativity and knowledge to produce genuinely special work that defies norms and expectations.

The work of Catherine Roach took me by surprise.

...and that's when I knew I was a goner.

I researched every piece of her work that I could find electronically.  By the time I had viewed it all, I felt like I had an intimate experience.

Roach’s work makes me sad a little, but I find myself smiling at the wit with which it is packaged.  I am aesthetically drawn to Roach’s frenzied sense of composition and use of color and then smacked by its raw, personal commentary.

The early worm gets gotten.

When I asked about her process, it all became a little clearer. Roach says, “I begin a piece by reading over the scribbled down sea of words from that day, and placing images for these statements in my head at first, jotting down ideas as I go. I work rapidly without restraint, not holding anything back, to some extent of a free write. I use a large variety of media when creating, from pens to watercolor, and acrylic to digital. Knowing I don’t ever have a limit, creating for myself and no one else is what drives me to a finish.”

Don't you feel trapped?

Learn How to Cook!I often ask artists what their favorite food is because I’m a foodie…and I am nosey that way.  This is a food-themed art blog–loosely speaking, but I rarely publish artists’ answers.

This time, I have to expose Catherine for what she is…a goldfish eater.  The comfort of cheese all wrapped up in a glowing, albeit tiny, smiling package.  Very telling, Ms. Roach, very telling.

...move on by Featured Artist Catherine Roach!

Catherine Roach is currently attending The New England Art Institute in Boston for Graphic Design, and approaching her final semester in January. And I must admit that I am concerned that she will always keep her work to herself like her own private little treasure.  I am bothered because I want to own the work of Catherine Roach.  And, I believe that is the highest compliment any viewer can give any artist.

I was walking and talking so fast by Featured Artist Catherine Roach!

I am a fan of taking medicine with a spoonful of sugar. Catherine, thank you for the sweet surprise.  Thank you for letting me publish just a little glimpse.

I am inspired.

Celine Eimann is a Swiss-born artist who is now based in Sydney, Australia.

Illustration for Green Stone-Eater Monster by Celine EimannEimann studied fine arts in Switzerland and Visual Communication Design at Billy Blue College of Graphic Arts in Sydney.

As far as she can recall, Eimann always had a passion for painting, staining, coloring almost everything within the reach of her fingertips (which sometimes got her in trouble)!

More recently she also started writing and illustrating children stories, which will be soon available in English and in French.  And, it is the illustration (pictured to the left) that truly grabbed my attention.

Illustration for the Green Stone-Eater Monster by Celine EimannWhen I inquired further about this piece after tripping across it on Eimann’s site, I found that that there were actually an number of pieces for a children’s book that written and illustrated by Eimann called The Green Stone-Eater Monster.

While The Green Stone-Eater Monster has yet to be published, it was recently awarded first prize (in the picture book/graphic novel category) at the Chidren and Young Adult Writers and Illustrators conference in Brisbane, Australia.

Visit Celine Eimann's site to see her gallery of work!In a recent blog post, Eimann outlines her current project, “I am now working on 3 new different projects.  One of them being my second children book. And for this one I am actually stepping into the world of ‘little creatures’…

“I am researching and sketching how to make a fairy looking deliciously graceful and the forest mysteriously magical…I have a zillion images running in my head… I am trying new methods… I know it will come, it always does. Doesn’t it?”

I am excited to see what comes of Eimann’s newest projects and to buy a copy or two of The Green Stone-Eater Monster when it comes to print.  You can find Eimann all over the web.  In addition to Eimann’s web site, you can follow her on Twitter, find her on MySpace and Facebook…and don’t forget to check out her blog.  I look forward to seeing more of her work!
