I love Cuban food.  The first time I ate Cuban food was in a strip mall in Goose Creek, SC just outside Charleston …no kidding.  With a strong military influence in the area before the shut down of the military base and the naval yard, international influence on food was pretty common.  The best Cuban food I ever tasted was in Miami and is responsible for my love affair with plaintains.  This next Call offers you an opportunity to sample some of the best food in the world during your time at this opening…

Learn more about the Sylvia White Gallery!Each summer, Sylvia White Gallery offers an exhibition opportunity to all artists interested in applying.  This year selected artists will be exhibited in their 4th Annual Juried Show.  Additionally, three artists will be selected for concurrent solo shows at dates to be arranged.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all US/International resident artists at least 18 years of age.

MEDIA:  Eligible entries include paintings, mixed media, works on paper, photography, sculpture, installation art, digital media, video and performance.

ENTRY FEE:  $35 (US dollars only) for 3 images, $5 each additional image, maximum 11 ($75).  If you want a website review in lieu of reviewing individual images, entry fee is $50.

Learn more about the Celeste Prize 2011The Celeste Network announces a call to artists for Celeste Prize 2011, November 11-13, 2011 at The Invisible Dog, Brooklyn, New York.  The prize has been established to promote international contemporary art in the widest possible sense. 

There will be a final art exhibition with 50 artworks, a final catalogue of circa 150 pages with circa 120 illustrated works of art and critical texts, as well as 5 prize awards and benefits totaling 30,000 € (approx. $42,000 US).  The exhibition of finalist works, voting and awards will take place at The Invisible Dog, Brooklyn, New York, 11-13 November 2011.

On feeling sacrificable by 2010 Painting Winner Gianni PolitiELIGIBILITY: The art competition is open to any person practicing art either as a professional artist in full-time or part-time, student artist or self-taught artist from anywhere in the world. There is no age limit for applicants and the prize is open to all artists whatever their qualifications, with or without experience of public or private exhibitions, critical acclaim, or collectors at a national or international level. The prize encourages participation by artists at every level.

MEDIA:  Painting, photography, graphics, drawing, print, video, sculpture, installation.  Excellence in content, contemporary aesthetic, technique, and material is sought in the selection of works for the final exhibition.  Works of art submitted to the prize must have been completed in the last 24 months, and do not necessarily have to have been exhibited before.  There is no special subject, title or theme required for participating works, they can range from being figurative to abstract, from conceptual to participatory in content and presentation.

Some foods just go together like peanut butter & chocolate, bacon & eggs, even pretzels & mustard.  But sometimes, the best pairings are a surprise like french fries & mayo or chocolate & chili.  This Call combines all the drama of modern dance with the interactive nature of installation artwork–a perfect pairing.  This is a great opportunity to be a part of a two-week pop up gallery in New York City.

Kinematik Dance and A+ Productions are soliciting proposals for exhibitions at Smoking Mirrors for Fall 2011 in New York City.  Artists will collaborate with choreographers and dancers in creating an interactive, multi-sensory performance environment.  Winning proposals will be sponsored for a two-week pop up gallery showing and two performance events with reception. Artistsʼ will receive exhibition opportunity, publicity, and documentation of work.

THEME:  Smoking Mirrors explores how identity has become synonymous with pixilation in our fast-paced, media-driven world.  How have our identities become pixilated through advanced technology and social media and which stages of fragmentation have led us to multiply ourselves? Has this shift given us more freedom and tools to define our own existence or has it, in fact, limited our capacity to simply exist?

Learn more about Kinematic Dance TheaterFrom the invention of the mirror to the iPhone, various devices have helped us create replicas of ourselves, often blurring the lines between what is real, imaginary, and symbolic. In this event we are inspired to journey through the various stages of fragmentation to the inevitable negotiation of identity. Starting with the uninterrupted experience of wholeness we move through the detachment of the self by reflection, society, traditional media (advertising) and hypermedia (social networking).

ELIGIBILITY: Open to installation artists, set designers, multi-media and video artists, and lighting designers.

MEDIA:  Smoking Mirrors is the first in a series of  “Performance Design” events that incorporates dance, design and multi media arts. Part performance, part art installation, and part party, the event will include 60 minutes of dances pieces that fuse movement, technology, imagery, and the unusual use of props. Performances will take place in various areas of a created multisensory and interactive environment, through which the audience will move to view performances.

Independent Curator, Clayton Windatt is seeking your letters of rejection for display in his new exhibition Social Rejection

Learn more about Social Rejection and exhibit by Clayton Windatt!All artists have received rejections; some more frequently than others.  The guilt, shame, pain and isolation that an artist feels when they receive a rejection letter can seem insurmountable.  This project will empower artists that have been rejected by publicly acknowledging the hostile environment that the arts councils have created. 

By exhibiting rejection letters from artists, collectives and organizations, this exhibition will address the stressful condition imposed on the artistic majority by the elite few.  Artists participating in this exhibition will be conforming to non-conformity and experiencing the empowerment of embracing their worthlessness.

ELIGIBILITY:  Rejection letters can be submitted by artists from all regions, disciplines and backgrounds, collectives and organizations. These letters will be adhered to the walls, ceiling and floor, to cover every surface of each exhibition space Social Rejection exhibits at. A roster of all participating artists will be presented at the rear of the exhibition venue acknowledging the participants, enabling acceptance through rejection.

ENTRY FEE:   Participants are asked to pay a small fee ($10 payable to “Social Rejection”) to help cover costs of creating and maintaining each exhibition as well as the costs of publicizing the event. Letters must be in English or French – there is no funding for additional translation services.

CURATOR/ARTIST:  Clayton Windatt is an artist, curator and outspoken advocate for artists’ rights. He holds a BA in Fine Art from Nipissing University and received his Graphic Designer certification from Canadore College. He contributes actively to several provincial and regional organizations as a writer, designer, and curator and is an active visual and media artist. Clayton’s current curatorial vision explores the unclear nature of the funding world, peer assessment committees and what constitutes acceptance.

NO LETTERS WILL BE RETURNED. If you need to retain your originals, please send photocopies.

COMMISSION:  No artist fees will be paid to any participants during this exhibition. This is an act of political aggression towards the arts councils of Canada. This statement will communicate the anguish that artists experience as a result of being rejected.

Today, I am going to give you a time-tested Southern recipe for success.  Use sugar, not vinegar.  It worked for Mary Poppins; it will work for you.  When sending in your Calls for Entries, your submissions for the $2 Art Contest or submissions for ANY show.  Be professional, but above all else… be nice.  I am going to have to quit saying that I do not usually recommend online exhibits because here is another one.  It is a great exhibit sponsored by a great site (albeit a competitor, of sorts)Consider the benefits.

JUROR:  Holly Koons McCullough is the Director of Collections and Exhibitions at the Telfair Museum of Art in Savannah, Georgia.  She began her career at the Telfair in 1996, serving as the museum’s Curator of Education before assuming leadership of the curatorial department.

A. in English and art history from the University of Georgia and a M.A. in art history from the University of Notre Dame.

AWARDS: Exemplary works will be displayed in a year-long online exhibition at www.artkudos.com beginning August 15th, 2011.  Cash awards totaling $4,400 will be distributed as follows: Best of Show – $1,200; Second Place – $900; Third Place – $750; Founder’s Award of Distinction – $500; (3) Merit Awards – $250 each; (3) Honorable Mentions – $100 each.

Learn more about the Haunted Basement at The Soap Factory!The Soap Factory is now accepting proposals for The Soap Factory’s 2011 Haunted Basement.  Considered the premier haunted event in the Minnesota, The Soap Factory’s infamously creepy and legitimately haunted basement is a perfect canvas for creating immersive terror environments. Each year they seek new ideas, fresh perspectives and unexpected scares. 

A limited number of room or environment designs and costume concepts will be accepted for The Soap Factory’s 2011 Haunted Basement.  Accepted applicants will have the creative freedom to design and fabricate a room or costume for The Haunted Basement. 

Although selected artists are expected to see their project through from conception to completion from May through August, artists will not be alone in this venture.

FISHY FACE

I have more than one friend that won’t eat food with a face… which should make her a vegetarian on moral grounds, right?  Well, while out to lunch with one of them many years ago, my friend ordered fish.  I promptly reminded her that she didn’t eat food with faces and that fish definitely have faces.  She looked at me as seriously as possible and said, “I’ve looked into a fish’s eyes.  They have no story to tell.  There’s nothing going on up there.  Bring on the tuna.”  This next Call will require that your face tell a story.

Check out this Call for Entries from the Annmarie Sculpture Garden (an affiliate of the Smithsonian Institute) for About Face.  The entry fee is only $20 for up to four pieces, and this is an excellent opportunity to put your best face forward.  Take a look!

About Face explores the artist as storyteller. How does an artist develop and arrange the elements of a good story—character, setting, plot, conflict, climax, and resolution—through the format of a portrait?  Though we all have a story to tell, what is gained or lost when we are rendered through an artist’s point of view?  Do the completed works represent the person we are, the person we strive to be, or the character the artist sees?  How do traditional and new media types affect the impact of a portrait?  To this end, the jury seeks portraits that tell a compelling story in a visually interesting way.

About Face will be installed in the spacious Mezzanine Gallery of Annmarie Sculpture Garden’s Arts Building.  With over 3300 sq ft of exhibition space, moveable walls, high ceilings, tile floors, an Arakawa hanging system, Internet access, and electricity, the Mezzanine Gallery can accommodate all sizes and types of installations.  A few outdoor works will also be considered for inclusion in About Face.

Learn more about the Annmarie Arts Center!ELIGIBILITY:  All media types are welcome.  The exhibition is open to all artists age 18 and older working in the U.S.  Video entries must be submitted on DVD, playable on QuickTime or RealPlayer, and no more than 30 minutes in length.
DVD or computer based works must be exhibited on equipment provided by artist. Internet access is available.  Bases and pedestals must well-balanced and sturdy. Annmarie has a limited number of bases available, please inquire.  All frames must be black or silver and simple in design.  All works that will be hung on the wall must have brackets that work with the Arakawa hanging system. More information on this system will be provided upon acceptance.

DEADLINE:  March 1, 2011 is the deadline for your application.

ENTRY FEE:  Artists must submit a $20 non-refundable entry fee for up to four entries. Entry fee must be paid by check, money order, or credit card. Each entry must be submitted with three images of the artwork, including one overall view of the artwork, one detail shot, and one installation shot.

ABOUT the ANNMARIE SCULPTURE GARDEN:  An affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution, Annmarie is a thirty-acre public sculpture garden and arts center located in scenic Solomons, Maryland, on the Chesapeake Bay. The sculpture garden features a walking path which meanders through the forest, past permanent and loaned sculpture, including more than thirty works on loan from the Smithsonian Institution and the National Gallery of Art. The garden also presents a variety of special events, gallery shows, and engaging public art programs. The new Studio School offers creative classes taught by a talented faculty. The award-winning Arts Building, which opened in May ‘08, is a 15,000 sq.ft. museum-grade exhibition space that includes two large galleries, a gift shop, café, and a sunny patio that offers lovely views of the outdoor sculpture.

Roswell, New Mexico

Well known by artists as the “Gift of Time”, the Roswell Artist-in-Residence Program was established in 1967 to provide gifted studio based visual artists with the unique opportunity to concentrate on their work in a supportive, collegial environment for a whole year. This “gift of time” allows artists to work without distraction in an effort to break new ground and focus on individual goals.

CURRENT DEADLINE: December 1, 2010 

MEDIA: In-residence grants are offered to artists involved in painting, drawing, sculpture, printmaking, photography, installation and other fine art media. Grants are not made in the disciplines of performance art or production crafts. 

HOUSING & STUDIO FACILITIES: The studios are large, open spaces that measure approximately 20’x25’x10′. These areas are well-lighted and convertible to the artist’s requirements within reason. The printmaking facility is a small, fully operational studio – basically lithographic/etching in nature. 

Artists are housed in a complex of six houses and 10 studios located on forty acres of land. Each artist is provided with a house that can amply accommodate either a single person or a family. Rent, utilities (except telephone), repairs and maintenance costs are borne by the Program. Houses are furnished with major furniture items, appliances and utensils. (continued below)

STIPEND:  A stipend, or living allowance, of $800 per month is offered along with $100 per month for every dependent living with the grantee. Currently, the cost of art materials is borne by the grantee.
