CALL for ENTRIES: Indie Grits

Learn more about the Indie Grits Film Festival!simple
STAPLE

I have grits for breakfast 3+ days per week.  I have a favorite brand of organic, non-GMO grits that never cease to inspire.  On a busy morning, it is scrambled eggs over the top of cheese grits.  The next morning, the refrigerated left over grits are cut into cakes that are sauteed and used as the base for Eggs Benedict.  This morning it was Charleston-style milk grits with a poached egg & chorizo.  There is no end to the independent spirit of this simple staple.  This next Call is an inspiration of grits proportions as well.  Take a look…

Check out this Call for Proposals from the Nickelodeon Theatre for the Future Perfect themed Indie Grits Film Festival.  Entries/Proposals ARE NOT limited to film.  No entry fee either.  Don’t pass this one by…

Why NOT food?  Yes, it is that time of year again.  I’ve received more hate mail from artists that think this blog would be far more effective if I would just quit talking about food.  The last time this happened, I actually added “a food-themed art blog” to the header.  To be honest, the half-dozen hate mail emails I get a year don’t really bother me.  But, I am always amazed at how much anger people can muster for the most insignificant issues.  This next call is equally obsessed with food.  I am in good company…

Knife skills are important if you are interested in becoming a commercial cook or chef.  However, I think the ground floor of cooking well, of understanding HOW to cook well, lies in sauce skills.  Once you understand how to make the 5 French mother sauces, you’ll understand the art of balance and the science of how food works.

Chia seeds are fascinating. I have started using them to make raw, small-batch refrigerator jam from overripe fruit.  Yum.  The seeds are hydrophilic, absorbing up to 12 times their weight in liquid when soaked. I MISS THE TREATS

I haven’t had a trick-or-treater at my door in years.  I miss seeing cute kids in even cuter costumes.  I miss giving out chocolate, knowing it may be the only candy that doesn’t get thrown away later. But alas, I live in the mountains.  Not many people live in neighborhoods, and those that do have an “organized community,” don’t have walkable streets.  We buy 4-wheel drive vehicles because we actually need them.  Our kids go downtown and trick or treat on Main Street.  No joke. BAKERY STAR

I love FoodTV as much as the next person, but cooking shows just frustrate me.  General shows that show me new cooking techniques or that introduce new foods are fantastic.  But, the idea that someone can learn to bake something that requires measuring and weighing from watching a food show is a little crazy.  Who can write that down and still pay attention.  Am I going to their website later to get the recipe that may or may not actually be there?  Not.  Am I going to DVR and re-watch later?  Not.  This next Call is a far better use of video.  Take a look…
