Chalk menu boards are sort of a bummer.  I can appreciate the eco-friendly nature of the notion as well as the flexibility for casual restaurants to keep their menus updated and filled with fresh ingredients.  But I sure miss the illustrated paper menus.  Aside from the handful of chalk art geniuses out there, nothing really beats bad menu illustration.  Come on, you know you just had a flash back to your favorite childhood pizza joint’s drawing of the mustachioed chef complete with red neckerchief and checkerboard pants.  I suspect those illustrators aren’t going to be competing in this next Call.  Take a look…

Check out this Call for Entries from the Association of Illustrators for the World Illustration Awards 2016.  entry fee is reasonable & lots of jurors usually means a level playing field.  Open to both students & professionals…

ARTIST of the Day: Helen Green

a legend LOST

David Bowie influenced so much of the world — music, fashion, design.  He died Sunday after a long battle with cancer.  Today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, Helen Green may have captured his sense of life and change and joy the best.  Thanks, Helen, for the bright spot in a dark day.

All people have something in common –hunger.  As a product of that hunger, we all have to eat.  Some of us are more interested in food than others.  Granted, not everyone is as obsessed as I am, but I’m also not the only one contemplating food several meals (sometimes several months) in advance.  There are towns where I feel right a home simply because of the food — like New Orleans, Louisiana.  This next Call, also food obsessed, feels like home too.  Iowa is calling…

Check out this Call for Entries from the Chait Galleries Downtown (Iowa City, IA) for Benjamin’s Banquet.   $25 entry, and well, the theme.  Take a look…

CALL for ENTRIES: Power It Forward

Green chili has made my week.  Sometimes I struggle in the winter since most produce is sun-powered.  But, I have learned how to make the best of what IS available.  Using imported, hot-house tomatoes is never my first choice; however, if you are going to cook them for hours, like I do in green chili, tangy unriped green tomatoes can be just the thing to fool your taste buds for another week until Spring arrives.  Here’s a sun-powered Call that will make your week too.  Take a look…

Check out this Call for Entries from Power It Forward for a T-Shirt Design contest.  Your design can help offer wind/solar power to one of the estimated 1.3 billion people without power in this world.  No entry fee, plus cash prizes. I love this one…

Being a great cook, is an interdisciplinary skill.  I know a handful of people who claim to be so uncreative that they “can’t draw a stick figure”.  Clearly, creativity is not measured by the quality of your stick figures.  But I am willing to accept those sorts of self-assessments –unless they come from a great cook.  Composing the perfect dish requires great taste, some basic scientific knowledge, both an eye for design and nose for the perfect unexpected ingredient.  Without that combination of talent, meals are likely to be unremarkable.  This Call is another way to put a combo of talents to the test.  Take a look…

Check out this Call for Entries from Creative Living Works (Somerville, MA) for Interdisciplinary, at the Washington Street Gallery. $20 Entry & 20% commission.  This is another reason to stretch your skills or even collaborate.  Investigate this opportunity…

Whether it is puppet construction, theater, set design, or painting, one creative process influences another.

Dan Dez has been developing games since 2002. After receiving his BFA in Computer Animation at Ringling School of Art and Design, he started his game development career which has spanned around the country and across PS2, GameCube, XBOX, Xbox360, PS3, iOS, Android and PC.  He is now and independent game developer who has always had an appreciation for Fine Arts.  After graduating from RISD, Sean Hilts worked as freelance Graphic Designer, founded The Brothers Hilts, an illustration/design team, and is currently a Senior User Experience Consultant.

ARTIST of the DAY: Amanda Senneby

life LESSONS

If the life of American artist Margaret Keane, famous for drawing portraits & paintings with big eyes, taught us anything, it is to be careful who you trust with your name, with your work — with your legacy.  Today’s featured work leaves me with the same words of caution.  AAAD is happy to share the work of Stockholm-based artist Amanda Senneby, our current Artist of the Day, with you. “A self-initiated book project with the working title Small Men Great Women.  The purpose of the project is to tell the story about successful couples where the women have been neglected in the historiography in favor of their men. I want to examine a simple way to communicate and pay attention to a difficult and inaccessible subject.” –Amanda Senneby

FUNGI

I’m afraid of eating wild mushrooms.  Correction, I am afraid of improperly identifying a mushroom as edible and doing unexpected harm to my family.  So, I have been trying to decide whether or not to grow them myself.  Growing mushrooms at home always conjures images of damp, basement-like conditions.  But research indicates I can crow them on logs in dappled shade, above ground, among the living, with fewer creepy-crawlies. This next Call want to know your views, wild OR domestic, but no veggies–just animals.  Take a look…
