KALE yeah!

How many kale lovers are among you? I read an article recently that suggested that so many people dislike kale because of its bitterness that there are varieties being bred to tame the flavor. Apparently people want to like kale but don’t know how. Tell me that’s not a metaphor for the divisive nature of politics in the world today. Wow.

I’ve made my peace with kale. I found a balance that allows the bitter to be a complement to my diet. I get the health benefit, the flavor, and the value of cheap-but-trendy green veg. I have not, however, made my peace with the politics of hate. We can co-exist, but that requires embracing our differences, and that is among the reasons I promote the Embracing our Differences call each year. If you’ve ever entertained the idea of adding public art to your resume, here’s an opportunity. The theme is open to really wide interpretation. You only need to take a look at their gallery of previous winners to understand that Coexistence is truly looking for YOUR point of view. ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists

MEDIA: 2 Dimensional work (photography, digital, collage, drawing, painting, etc.)

DEADLINE: October 8, 2019 (midnight Pacific Standard Time)

NOTIFICATION: If selected for inclusion in the exhibit, you will be notified by email by late December. Due to the volume of submissions, only artists with entries selected for display will be notified individually. All winning entries will be posted on the website by early January.

ENTRY FEE: None

AWARDS: A total of $3,000 USD will be presented in the form of three separate awards – $1,000 each for “Best-in-Show Adult;” “Best-in-Show Student;” and the “People’s Choice.”

JURY PROCESS: Both “Best-in-Show” awards will be granted by a three-judge panel of art professionals. The “People’s Choice” award will be determined by visitors to the exhibits.

FLAVOR bombs

I’ve never been a fan of frozen green veggies. The flavor often reminds me of those little peas in one-dollar pot pies, not entirely natural. But there is a glaring exception. Edamame. I love those little beans. I like them steamed in their pods, then dipped in a little dumpling sauce (thai chili paste & soy) then sucked from their little green shells. It isn’t pretty, but I am hooked.

Another perienniel favorite that is all about the color is the BWAC color show. This is a great space that has grown to become Brooklyn’s largest artist-run organization with over 250 members. Your dollars have power; spend them wisely. I love this organization & its mission.

I was on a flight from Chicago to Atlanta recently when the pilot announced it was going to be a very bumpy ride. I’m not a bad flyer, but it doesn’t stop me from white-knuckling the armrest everytime we drop a few feet. But sharing my flight was a 3-year-old girl, traveling with her father, all full of energy & curiousity. Everytime we would hit turbulence and drop a little, she would giggle & laugh & hold her stomach. For me, turbulence is a chance I’m going to die, for her, it is a stomach drop in the elevator or over the top hill of a rollercoaster. I will never experience airplane turbulence the same way. Perspective.

When asked (frequently BTW) about my favorite artist or style of art, my immediate reaction is to reject being backed into a corner by that sort of reductivism, but eventually my answer boils down to “perspective”. I want to be shown a different way to see, feel or be with something in the world, or not in the world as the case may be. I’ll take irony, sarcasm, absurdism, realism, surrealism or any other work that makes me better, or worse, for the experience. The wit of Austrian-based artist & illustrator, Alice Wellinger, today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, drew me in immediately. I make a lot of granola these days. I tripped across this mostly Paleo recipe & altered it to taste. (We don’t eat Paleo, specifically, but I am often drawn to the recipes.) This version is absent the oats found in most granola, so it lacks the chalky, starchy lethargic quality of the stereotypical bagged cereal. My version is mostly nuts & seeds with a bit of dried fruit, coconut oil & a dash of honey. There seems to always be a batch in the oven, and I’m going through roll after roll of parchment paper. Where I live, one dollar will buy you nearly 2lbs of bananas, canned beans (even organic), dried beans, yogurt & one or pieces of a lot of tree fruits like apples, oranges or pears. My husband and I celebrated our 20th anniversary with Chinese takeout because neither of felt like cooking or grocery shopping. It was our typical night egg drop soup & steamed dumplings, but the thing that made the night a celebration came in a paper bag. A beautiful, fresh chocolate eclair from our local doughnut shop, a guilty pleasure from the middle years of our marriage when that was one of the only splurges we could afford. Since then, I tend to watch my sugar intake and my husband was diagnosed with a wheat allergy.
