I seem to have Italian and Greek food on the brain these days. I usually write the food reference paragraph of these posts to see what the Call conjures in my mind and stomach. OPEN CALL: Grand Opera House Galleries

The Grand is actively searching for artists to exhibit their work in the 2011/12 season at one of the galleries in the beautiful, historic Opera House. Along with the opportunity to show for the month, artists will also take part in the City of Wilmington’s Art on the Town, also known as the first Friday Art Loop.

ELIGIBILITY: The body of work in the exhibition should not be work that has been previously exhibited at The Grand.

MEDIA: All 2-Dimensional media. See application.

DEADLINE: Ongoing.

ENTRY FEE: There is a Gallery fee of $25.00 for each application submitted.

SALES: Artists are responsible for providing a price list identifying the works by number, title, size, media and price. A minimum of 100 copies should be available for the opening and visitors’ use throughout the show. The amount of work for sale is at the discretion of the artist. The Grand does not take a percentage of any work sold, however, if work is sold for a profit The Grand suggests a small donation be made to the venue.

I grew up with a jar of chow-chow frequently on the table as THE condiment of choice. For those of you not familiar with this pickled treat, Chow-chow is a pickled relish made from a combination of vegetables. Mainly green tomato, cabbage, tomatoes, onions, carrots and peas are used. These are pickled in a jar & served cold. I’ve always thought this gem had Southern roots, but I’ve recently learned that a sweeter version has it’s roots in Pennsylvania. Susquehanna University’s Lore Degenstein Gallery presents work by both professional and student artists in five exhibitions a year. The gallery is located in the Degenstein Campus Center. All Lore Degenstein Gallery events are free and open to the public.

When I think of salt water taffy, I think of the mountains. Odd, eh? I suspect that salt water taffy got its start on seaside boardwalks, but it seems every small mountain town has a great little store front that lets you watch taffy being made. I know that here in Gatlinburg, there is more than one. I wonder if Blue Ridge, GA (home of this Call) has a taffy shop. Sounds like a great reason to attend the reception…

Check out this Call for Entries from the Southern Appalachian Artist Guild for their Annual National Juried Show which will be exhbiited in the Richard Low Evans Gallery in Blue Ridge, GA, one of “America’s Top Art Communities.” I know that discussing art sales is like talking about religion or politics in polite company (in bad taste), but I will say it anyway… this could be a great opportunity to sell some artwork.

CALL for ART ENTRIES: National Juried Show

You are cordially invited to enter the annual National Juried Show sponsored by the Southern Appalachian Artist Guild (The Guild). The show will be juried by Asheville, NC gallery owner John Cram. Blue Ridge, GA is located in the beautiful north Georgia mountains. The show will run in the peak visitor months of October and November attracting interest from the surrounding metropolitan areas of Atlanta, Asheville, Chattanooga and Knoxville. Art works selected by the juror will be displayed in the Richard Low Evans Gallery of the Blue Ridge Mountains Arts Association (The Art Center) in Blue Ridge, Georgia.

ELIGIBILITY: Artists who are residents of the United States are invited to participate in a juried exhibition.

MEDIA: Mixed Media, Oil or acrylic, Pastel framed, Three-Dimensional art, Water media framed, Photography framed, Computer art framed, All Other: including drawing, color pencil, pen and ink, but excluding all print reproductions (including Gicleé).

JUROR: John Cram has pursued his dream for the past 35 years through the creation of four distinctive galleries in the Asheville, NC area. Blue Spiral 1, New Morning Gallery and Bellagio have paced the recognition of Asheville as a vital center of the arts. Mr. Cram’s name is synonymous with Asheville’s renaissance. His eye for art is unquestioned and apparent in his galleries and in the vision he has helped breathe into the Asheville art environment.

AWARDS: $5000 in prize money will be awarded.

SALES: A commission of 35% (30% for Guild members) will be retained by The Art Center for all work sold during the course of the show.

I am a magazine reader. Yep, the paper ones. I read and peruse imagery as motivation for household projects, photography and, of course, cooking. And the occasional gossip rag. One of my favorite food magazines? Food and Wine, of course. I have delusions of grandeur each and every time I watch Top Chefs that I could win that show and have my work featured in F&W. Instead, I am opting to submit my art to this Call for Creative Quarterly. Do you think Food & Wine will be so impressed they will cover my food anyway? Me neither. By launching a new redesign, they’ve become a much more interactive journal. They search the web for interesting projects in art and design to share with their readers. They ask their readers to share what inspires them. The purpose, not to copy but to inspire.

Inspiration can come from an innovative chair design or an unusual ring or from an interview with a well-known designer or artist or something from ones past.

Creative Quarterly is the best of art and design, quarterly.

ELIGIBILITY & MEDIA: Open to all undergraduate and graduate students, recent graduates, professors, instructors, graphic designers, art directors, illustrators, photographers and fine artists in all media.

All entries must have been completed during the last twelve months. CALL for ENTRIES: Embracing our Differences

Embracing Our Differences invites artists, photographers, professionals, amateurs, teachers and students to participate in its annual visual art exhibit celebrating diversity. The Embracing Our Differences exhibit will be displayed throughout the months of April and May 2012 at Island Park along Sarasota’s beautiful bayfront.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists. National and international submissions are encouraged.

DEADLINE:
January 9th, 2012

ENTRY FEE:
There is no entry fee.

45 artists will be selected for the exhibit.

Since 2004, the exhibit has been viewed by more than 850,000 visitors. The exhibit will contain 39 billboard-sized (16 feet wide by 12 1/2 feet high) images of the selected artworks. In the judges’ discretion, an additional six “honorable mention” selections may be made.

SELECTION PROCESS: Final selections will be chosen based on artistic excellence in reflection of the theme “Embracing Our Differences.”

The art-work will also be evaluated on how effectively it will read outdoors when enlarged to billboard size – 16′ wide by 12.5′ high.

Artists are encouraged to use
bold saturated colors and strong lines.

Final selections will be made by a 3-judge panel of professional artists, curators and art professionals.

AWARDS: A total of $3,000.00 in awards will be presented.

I talk a good food game. My culinary tastes seem brave to some, but they aren’t really. I know what I like, but I’m a chicken about trying some stuff just like you. I cannot bring myself to even try something called head cheese. I get that it is mainly just meat in aspic, but it sounds gross and doesn’t win huge points with me for aesthetics either. One of you should take a picture of yourself eating head cheese and send it to me. The first one that does will get a little ad in the side bar for a couple of months. Make it a good picture though… ’cause I WILL publish it before you get your ad. I wonder if head cheese is an eligible topic for this next Call for Entries. Take a look…

SlowArt Productions presents the annual group thematic exhibition, A Show of Heads. The exhibition will be held at the Limner Gallery from November 3 – 27, 2011.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists

MEDIA: All forms of painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, graphics, digital and installation art, video, etc. are eligible.

THEME: This exhibition will include all interpretations and portrayals of the human head, from the traditional to the abstract and conceptual. All visions of the The Head, including partial and multiple heads, will be reviewed and considered.

DEADLINE: Entries must be submitted via email by August 31, 2011.

NOTIFICATION: Artists will be notified of acceptance or non-acceptance no later than September 21, 2011. Results will be posted on or before this date at: http://www.slowart.com/results. Notification will be made via email and by posting on the results page. All artists who provide a working email address will be notified via email, if no email is provided, artists will be notified via postal mail only if accepted to exhibit. Type your email address clearly, if a mistake is made you will not be notified.

ENTRY FEE: There is a $35.00 entry fee for one to four artworks entered, presentation is by digital JPG image files. There is a $5.00 fee for each additional artwork above four. Details of 2D artwork count as an additional artwork. Sculptors may provide one additional view per artwork without cost. Artists accepted to exhibit will not be charged additional fees of any kind. Payments by credit card at time of entry using PayPal, or check or money order payable to SlowArt Productions.

AWARDS: Winning artists will be featured in a group exhibition at the Limner Gallery, November 3 – 27, 2011. The exhibition will also be displayed on the Limner Gallery web site. One artist will be awarded a two page display in Direct Art Volume #19, Fall 2012 issue. Two artists will be awarded a single page display. When sending in your Calls for Entries, entries for the $2 Art Contest or for ANY show. Be professional, but above all else… be nice. Learn more about the Art Kudos show sponsored by Artshow.com! Art Kudos is an annual international juried competition that serves to recognize and honor excellence in the visual arts. Artists who are selected as finalists benefit from world-wide exposure in a year-long online exhibition and have the opportunity to win cash awards for their exemplary work.

ELIGIBILITY: The competition is open to artists anywhere in the world, 18 years of age or older. Publishers, galleries, agents, and collectors may not submit artwork on behalf of artists.

MEDIA: Drawings, paintings, printmaking, photography, digital art, sculpture, installations, wood, glass, ceramics, fiber art and mixed media are eligible. Media not accepted: video/film, wearable art (clothing or jewelry). All works submitted must be original in design and concept. Artwork must not be copied, in part or wholly, from any published or copyrighted work. Work previously shown in an Art Kudos exhibition is ineligible. Please do not submit images which would be inappropriate for general audiences.

ENTRY FEE: Artists must submit a completed entry form and pay a non-refundable entry fee of $30 US dollars (check, money order, or PayPal) to submit 3 images. For sculptural or three-dimensional pieces, artists may submit 2 views of each work (for a total of 6 images).

JUROR: Holly Koons McCullough is the Director of Collections and Exhibitions at the Telfair Museum of Art in Savannah, Georgia. She began her career at the Telfair in 1996, serving as the museum’s Curator of Education before assuming leadership of the curatorial department.

McCullough spearheaded the publication of the Telfair’s first collection catalogue, and has organized exhibitions on subjects ranging from modern silverpoint drawings to contemporary Southeastern art, as well as 19th and early 20th-century American art, including the recent Dutch Utopia exhibition. She holds a B. A. in English and art history from the University of Georgia and a M.A. in art history from the University of Notre Dame.

AWARDS: Exemplary works will be displayed in a year-long online exhibition at www.artkudos.com beginning August 15th, 2011. Cash awards totaling $4,400 will be distributed as follows: Best of Show – $1,200; Second Place – $900; Third Place – $750; Founder’s Award of Distinction – $500; (3) Merit Awards – $250 each; (3) Honorable Mentions – $100 each.

COMMISSION: No commissions are taken for sales generated via the exhibition, and works submitted do not have to be available for sale. Sales will be encouraged, however, and artists will have the option to display their contact information beside their images.
