the BENEFITS

Food in academic settings takes on a very different feel and taste.  I spent a year in culinary school before I realized I didn’t have the stamina to make my living standing on my feet.  But, I learned priceless knife and sauce skills that I treasure.  One of the most interesting things about my inital year at Johnson & Wales was the time spent on analyzing the basics, perfecting the standards before having the freedom to break the rules.  This next Call is for media considered the foundation of art education, but there’s no restriction on content.  Break the rules for me…

Check out this Call for Entries from the Department of Art & Art History at the University of Texas (Tyler, TX) for their 27th Annual International Exhibition.  Here’s your chance to be in a permanent collection.  Take a look…

I don’t eat pine.

I enjoy the occasional Murder Mystery Dinner show, but I never want the mystery to be WHAT I am eating.  I have fairly adventurous taste in food, but I still want the courtesy of knowing what I am putting in my mouth.  For some reason, more than one chef has said to me, “I made it special for you, just try it.”  99% of the time they are right; however, for the occasional 1%, I have this to say to the chef, “If you had just TOLD me there were pine nuts in the wild boar dish, I could have spared you the public “ick” face when I tried it.”  So there.  This next Call is not really a Mystery for YOU, despite the name.  Investigate for yourself…

Check out this Call for Entries for the 2011 Masters Mystery Art Show from Florida International University (Miami, FL).  This is an all-hung exhibit that won’t cost you an entry fee, but WILL cost you the donation of a 6×9 work on paper.  Take a look…

The Masters’ Mystery Art Show (MMAS) is an international annual art event featuring over 1000 artworks by more than 500 artists from 31 countries around the globe. It includes nationally and internationally recognized artists, many brilliant emerging artists, as well as a number of celebrities from other fields.  The MMAS was developed to benefit Florida International University’s Master of Fine Arts in Visual Arts Program.   This event coincides with Art Basel and takes place at the Ritz-Carlton, Miami Beach.

The list of contributing artists, including a host of well-established names, will be widely publicized in advance.  Adding to the excitement will be the participation of renowned celebrities in different disciplines and selected local students will compliment the roster. The “mystery” is that the name of the artist for each work is kept secret during the exhibition, only to be revealed at the completion of the sale.  Thus the public is invited to “play detective” as they try to identify the artist – and be the first to buy the best!

Learn more about the Master Mystery Art Show from Florida International University!ELIGIBILITY:  Open to all artists.

MEDIA:  All exhibited works will be originals in a 6” x 9” format and will sell for the fixed price of $50.

DEADLINE:  Submitted artwork must be received by November 15th, 2011.

NOTIFICATION:  None.  This is an all-hung exhibit.

ENTRY FEE:  None.

I am a fan of bold flavors, but I’ve never developed a taste for caraway seeds also known as rye.  The one exception to my caraway seed rule is pumpernickel rye bread.  Maybe it is the earthy texture of the pumpernickel and the more practical everyday uses for bread that make it my exception.  This next Call is my second exception for acceptable rye.  This is a great holiday opportunity…

I love reading about food almost as much as cooking it and eating it.  Amongst my favorites are polar opposites:  Cooking Light and Food & Wine.  No surprise, I’ve had a bit of a struggle with my weight over the years.  In recent years, I’ve gotten better control of my food issues by figuring out one amazing fact… My menu is far more varied and exciting when I am trying to figure out how to do it in a healthy manner.  It was a fascinating personal discovery.  So, while I adore the gourmand Food & Wine, I am personally more likely to actually prepare foods found in Cooking Light.  This next call can make your work the tempting dessert on the cover of an art catalog.  Take a look…

In french cooking, sauce and knife skills are the beginning of all knowledge.  You would be simply amazed by how many sauces start with a basic hollandaise.   Similarly, horses are the foundation of many an art class.  I had an art teacher that once said to me, “If you can master sketching a the complex form of the majestic horse, all of art is at your fingertips.”  I never mastered sketching a horse, but I can make a mean hollandaise.  Luckily, this next Call doesn’t require that I SKETCH a horse.
