LEMON DROPS

I’ve always been lucky in the kitchen.  Most of my experiments work.  I often get it right the first time I try.  Maybe that is how my love affair with food began–as something successful.  Who isn’t attracted to being good at something?  I often struggle in the studio, but the struggle produces better work.  So am I lucky not to be lucky in the studio? Semantics, I suspect. Maybe this next Call will be lucky for you…

Check out this Call for Entries from the Mesquite Fine Arts Center Gallery for Lucky 13.  Enter for as little as, you guessed it, $13.  Plus the size restriction makes shipping less expensive.  Take a look…

GLASS HOUSES

In the end, glassware is always the workhorse in my kitchen.  From ramekins and measuring cups for ingredients, mixing bowls for pastry, lasagna and pie pans for casseroles and quiches.  And, I’ll admit that the cooler they look, the more likely they are to end up in my cabinet.  This next Call is the way to have your artwork in the cabinets around the world.  Take a look…

SHALLOT
on the fire

Vacation has not been kind to my figure.  Tomorrow is the last day of my summer vacation at Lake Lure (Dirty Dancing & Last of the Mohicans were filmed here), and I am already trying to figure out tomorrow’s food schedule and we’ve just finished with today’s brunch.  What is it about being out of town that leads to over-indulgence and gluttony?  Maybe I need another treat to figure it out. We’ll call it research, ha.  Luckily, this next Call takes all interpretations of “figure,” even the vacation version.  Take a look…

GOURMET

I had another Jetsons dream.  This one involved me in my futuristic kitchen that was equipped with completely mobile gadgetry.  I could sit or stand in one place and everything would come to me as I needed it just by thinking it.  Is it telling that I even dream about my own laziness?  Maybe instead of my laziness, it was just a premonition of a design for this next Call.  So cool…

So I’m a little shy about my food knowledge.  My friends, readers and even my family ask food questions all the time with the assumption that I will know the answers because I write about food everyday.  And, if you need to know how to boil the perfect egg, I’m your woman.  But, I can’t tell you the flavor profile of every fruit, veggie and meat on the planet because I haven’t tried them ALL.  I’m working on it though. In the meantime, when asked a question to which I don’t have an answer.  I just shyly beg off the subject.  Don’t be shy about this next opportunity…

Check out this Call for Entries from Shy Rabbit (Pagosa Springs, CO) for The Art of It All.  Like the name of the show implies, they are open to all media–even some fine craft like jewelry, basketry and glass work. Take a look…

of food

I have drafted a dozen cookbooks in my head.  They are usually inspired by whatever food eccentricity I am dwelling on at the moment.  But they always have their roots in momentary excitement as opposed to being deep-rooted in a true philosophy about food.  Maybe if I ever find myself, a cookbook will make it out of the draft stage.  In the meantime, my roots will have to be of the vegetable variety.  This next Call want to explore YOUR feelings on roots, or the lack thereof…

Check out this Call for Entries from DRAFTspace (NY, NY) for Rootlessness, a two-part themed exhibit.  Selected artists will exhibit their solo exhibitions in the street-level pop-up space on Manhattan’s vibrant Lower East Side gallery district.  This is a great chance for that New York opening you’ve always wanted…

The exhibition series will consist of two sections – Works on Paper and Works on Space – and one exhibition proposal for each section will be chosen and realized on New York’s Lower East Side.

NY has historically been home to ethnically diverse immigrants, inspiring feelings and experiences related to migration, temporality, transformation, assimilation, or conflict.  DRAFTspace is hosting this exhibition series to provoke attention and discussion about this sense of rootlessness.  Artists are encouraged to interpret the theme creatively.

The theme of rootlessness is connected to the unique space setup and location. The exhibit will not be held in a permanent gallery space.  Instead, it will temporarily occupy a street-level vacant retail space that will be consecutively transformed to fit the different identity and characteristics of each exhibition.

Learn more about the Rootlessness Exhibits!

The Lower East Side where this event will take place has long been an immigrant neighborhood and has seen a series of immigrant communities pass through it.  The area has undergone gentrification, starting in the mid-2000s and has since become home to upscale boutiques and numerous contemporary art galleries.

ELIGIBILITY:  Open to all artists

MEDIA:  Painting, Drawing, Printmaking, Photography, or Illustration for “Works on Paper” section OR Sculpture or Site-Specific Mixed Media Installations for “Works on Space” section

ENTRY FEE: $40 per entry for up to 10 images

Cartography
WATT makes street maps of fictional cities, encrypted with stories & secrets. They are often based on all the wonderful places he has been and the wonderful places he hopes to go. He wants to explore both the real and imaginary and the links between them. Watt's city maps take on organic forms, much like a bloodstream, clotted with city blocks.

Watt has exhibited internationally, and his work has been featured in online and print publications.

I think the teenagers that work at my local market think I am the crazy produce lady.  It might have something to do with the muttering under my breath when they drop the pineapple on my tomatoes or the fact that I will stand in a longer line to get the cashier that won’t drop a cantaloupe on my cilantro.   The muttering prevents me from coming unhinged.  The only thing missing from the scenerio is my muttering “whippersnappers,” but I assure you it will show up eventually.
