Do you know what you call a spice cupcake without the cream cheese frosting?  A breakfast muffin.  My husband is dubious, but I say the notions of breakfast, lunch, supper and dinner foods are abstract at best.  Why must it be eggs for breakfast?  And how much difference is there between banana bread and carrot cake, really?  Mmmhmm.  This next Call is looking for the abstract, and they DON’T mean carrot cake OR banana bread.  Take a look…

I cannot eat enough watermelon these days. And, I am intrigued by the variances.  My town has ONE grocery store, and the markings indicate that most of the watermelons they carry come from a single source.  So how is it that 3 melons of equal ripeness bought on 3 different days taste SO different?  One is super sweet, one in grainy & one is ripe, but tangy.  This next Call is for Still Life where the presence of fruit is ubiquitous.  Did you every notice how rarely you see watermelon in those paintings?  Contemplate that when you choose your subject matter…

EGGY

How is it that quiche became girly food?  I was at a cafe recently that specializes in quiche.  The waitress was reciting the day’s specials to a neighboring table of guests when the man interrupted her to say, “I’m not interested in quiche; I’m a MAN.” Really?  It is eggs, cream and cheese.  I thought, “Maybe it is due to the pie form.”  But, men eat pie, right?  I don’t understand his reasoning, but I restrained myself from asking for the sake of the man sitting at my table.  Maybe this next Call is looking for the quiche-goodness in women only.  Maybe.  Investigate…

The hot-fresh-now doughnut purveyor is very popular during tourist season in the Smokies.  Summertime often means a car line for the drive thru stretches for a 1/4 mile down the Parkway.  I don’t understand.  I’ll stand in line, or sit in line, for a lot of foods, but why doughnuts?  Donuts with a K are everywhere aren’t they?  What makes them so special while you’re on vacation?  It baffles me.  This next Call does NOT baffle me, and the name is all about the lines.  Check out the gallery and/or online show choice.  Interesting option…

I usually like to get food as close to the source or source process as possible.  But, I cannot bring myself to love Mexican chocolate.  Most of the world uses a conche for varying lengths of time to incorporate cocoa butter within chocolate.  The longer the processing, the smoother the chocolate.  But Mexican chocolate is still often stone-ground which produces a gritty texture.  I am addicted to dark chocolate, but I want it smoooooth.  This next Call offers the opportunity for you to be dark and either smooth or gritty.  To each their own…

I’ll take the Abstracted Caesar–hold the deconstruction.  I love it when culinary lingo takes a weird side trek.  Apparently the minute difference is that deconstructed food is technically a dish with ALL of its components separated.  Meanwhile, abstracted food features only the main components separated out.  Hilarious.  In the meantime, this next Call wants your Abstract work, not deconstructive work.  Take a look…

Moving beyond verisimilitude abstraction frees the artist from the object.  This opens the door for a vast variety of visual interpretations which indeed makes abstract art the most challenging.  The artist’s facility with the materials & focus on surface makes abstraction particularly interesting today.  But w/o personal content, symbolism or “event”,  it risks becoming conceptually mundane & void of meaning.
