ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists

MEDIA: Figurative or representational paintings, drawings (including mixed media) & original prints.

DEADLINE: May 1, 2016

NOTIFICATION: June 1, 2016

ENTRY FEE: €20 (approx. $23 USD) for 5-10 works

AWARDS: The Moth Art Prize consists of a month-long retreat at a newly renovated barn in a beautiful lakeland setting in rural Ireland, along with a travel stipend of €1,000 (approx $1144 USD). The barn, which features a studio and living area downstairs and open-plan accommodation upstairs, is situated along a quiet country lane, surrounded by lakes. The nearest village of Milltown, which has a shop and a pub, is a few kilometers away. A bicycle will be provided, and the publishers of The Moth will be on hand to take you to the nearest town for provisions.

The winner chooses what month of the year they would like to spend at the barn. There is room enough in the barn to accommodate a partner and up to three children, if you should wish to travel en famille. There is no onus on the artist to produce a body of work while staying at the barn. We want it to be a place to rejuvenate and be inspired.

We intentionally create leftovers by overcooking dinner so that we have a few easy options for lunch on hand. But, left over veggies that didn’t get fully used in salads or stir frys become the best fillings for spring rolls. We’re a little addicted. Have I mentioned that rice paper is my newest obsession? As much as I appreciate their function, I’ll admit that how little room they take up in the pantry and the fact that they seemingly never expire may very well make them the perfect bread replacement. JUROR: Carter E. Foster is the Curator of Drawing at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City. In a museum career spanning 20+ years, Foster has specialized in the history of drawing & continuities of artistic practice in Europe & America from the Renaissance to the present. He has held curatorial positions at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Cleveland Museum of Art, the L.A. County Museum of Art, & Whitney Museum of American Art, where he is currently the Curator of Drawing. A specialist on the work of Edward Hopper, he recently organized the exhibition Hopper Drawing. Foster also writes extensively on post-war and contemporary American art.

SALES: All work must be for sale. The Long Beach Island Foundation of the Arts & Sciences will retain a 40% commission of the purchase price on all works sold during the exhibition.

Beautiful food is enticing. Culinary schools offer classes that teach presentation for a reason. But ugly food has its place. I had lunch with a friend yesterday; she insisted I pick the restaurant. I chose Indian food only to discover she had never eaten Indian food. I felt the need to warn her that the food was delicious, but ugly. Maybe ugly is a little too strong. Popcorn is now complicated. I used to enjoy it from the theatre or from the microwave. But in the continuing effort to eat real food, my husband now insists on popping it from the kernel on top of the stove. We ran out two days ago, and after briefly considering experimenting with the .gif suggesting you can pop it on the cob in your microwave (don’t do this, btw), we opted for a bag of microwaveable popcorn left from a recent hotel stay. I am not a fan of buffet restaurants. Even when I get past the being herded like school children through a cafeteria line, I have trouble with all inclusive nature. How can one hold everything at a single temp & humidity and expect everything to thrive? Some foods are fragile. Celery & carrots require higher humidity. Dairy needs a lower temp than washed greens. In exchange for larger variety, we end up with mediocre versions of fresh food that would have better maintained their individuality in a kitchen. I believe the concept of “edible” is abstract, not just subjective. Technically, anything that doesn’t kill you is edible. Well, really, you can still eat things that WILL kill you. So, I suppose if you are physically able to consume something, it is edible. So, maybe the notion of “eatability” is the abstract one. Why would someone pay a fortune to eat a fertilized duck egg? Because they are yummy? Doubtful. But, the precedent for eating eggs and eating ducks has been set, so I understand why it would occur to someone to try. But coconut? Bugs, both lady & stink, invade my house every winter. I can only assume their numbers increase wildly due to the need to seek warmth. The ladybugs that everyone adores are different that the erratic, mean-spirited beetle variety that haunts the windows & lampshades in my home. And the stinkbugs, oh my. Did you know that National Geographic wrote an article a few years ago suggesting that these odoriferous creatures add an apple flavor to sauces? Thanks, but no. I’ll stick with the orchard original. ARTIST of the DAY: Oriol Malet

I find artist inspiration in unexpected places. Lately, I’ve had a rash of commissions that have come musicians –from punk to folk. My brain processes the sound aesthetically and the imagery just appears. I appreciate the opportunity to exercise my creative brain differently. Today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, Oriol Malet finds much of his motivation in jazz. (continues below)

Malet assures us that he does not take his references from graphic design but from literature and music. Oriol’s drawings derive more from the work of Boris Vian or Charles Mingus than from any visual artists. He has been studying music for five years on the drums he has played all his life. Now, in addition, in honor of his devotion to jazz, he has begun to play the trumpet.
