It snowed today, in March, in the South, after a couple of weeks of nearly L.A.-like weather. And, of course, I heard lots of grumbling about how produce prices were going to be sky high because of ruined crops. But, truth be told, most folks growing produce this time of year are growing in high tunnels that protect them from minor snow fall and light frost. And some fruit trees like apricots cold exposure amazingly well. This next Call offers exposure that is off benefit, not to be feared. Editor’s Note: I am well-aware of the hackneyed, trite promise of exposure as a payoff for exhibitions that only end up taking an artist’s time & resources offering nothing of real value in return. I don’t like them either. THIS is not one of THOSE as best I can tell. Unlike most billboard calls, there are NO production or participation costs outside of the entry fee. Musée is dedicated to exposing audiences to the most dynamic, unexpected, and cutting edge photography from both up-and-coming and established photographers, while working alongside the industry’s most prestigious artists, gallerists, curators, and collectors. Blanch’s work has been featured in individual and group shows, books, private collections, and has been published in The New York Times Magazine, Vogue, and Rolling Stone. She also teaches at the International Center for Photography and is a member of the APA.

AWARDS: Selected work will be displayed on billboards throughout Los Angeles. The show is promoted on the TBC website & social media channels. A map is created with artists’ information, website, location of board that can either be seen on an APP or downloaded from the website (past examples).

I’ve had many a conversation about why some foods, eggs & bread & oysters for example, come in dozens. I’ve heard that it is easier to divide because it has more factors (1, 2, 3, 4 & 6). I’ve heard that a bakers dozen (13) exists merely so delivery men don’t eat part of the order making the baker look like a cheat. I’ve heard it originated in the fact that there were 12 pennies in a shilling which made sales without change making easier. None of these are verifiable though. Did you know there is even a Dozenal Society that advocates for 12 as our base number instead of 10? While you contemplate the math of it all, this next Call will only choose a half dozen artists to participate in this show. Are you one of six?

JUROR: Danielle Krysa has a BFA in Visual Arts, and a post-grad in graphic design. She is the writer/curator behind the contemporary art site, The Jealous Curator (est.2009). Danielle has curated shows from Washington DC to Los Angeles, San Francisco to Toronto. In 2014 she published two books, titled “Creative Block” and “Collage”. Her third book, “Your Inner Critic Is A Big Jerk” was released in October 2016, and she is currently working a new book due out Fall 2018. Danielle has also had the great pleasure of speaking at TEDx, PIXAR, Creative Mornings, CreativeLive, and was interviewed for several video segments on oprah.com.

AWARDS: Artists selected by the guest juror will receive a 2-page spread including a brief bio, website, and 2 images in print and digital formats. Published artists will receive a complimentary digital issue and will be listed on Create! Magazine’s website/social media. and will be listed with images, details and information on our website/social media for life. I eat SO MANY tacos. Because I travel so often, I find picking a good restaurant, be it counter service or table, has odds not unlike roulette (37 to 1). But I have consistently had great tacos, nearly everywhere. I rarely meet anyone that doesn’t like a good taco. They are like the great joiners of people. Aside from being bad eating-while-driving food (due to the mess), I can eat a taco almost anywhere with almost anyone. Differences seem to disappear. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if the answer to embracing our differences was a simple as the ordering from the local taco truck? I’m a Gemini. My husband is a Virgo, and my son is Leo. My mother is an Aquarius while my father is a Capricorn, like his mother Emma. My great aunt Magdalene was a Cancer. She read our horoscopes to us at the breakfast table just after riotously laughing at the B.C. comic strip — the comic & predictive located on the same page. I could always find myself in the predictions for every sign. It was either childhood narcissism or an early indicator an eventual empathetic nature. Regardless, I never put much faith in the accuracy of astrological signs, but I know many, many people try very hard to fulfill expectations that make us appear inculpable in our own journey.

Today’s AAAD Artist of the Day Terri Lloyd, has completed a series, “As Above, So Below“ that revolves around the signs of the zodiac. The third sentence of the press release began, “I’d don’t put a lot of stock in such things personally”. It seems perfectly in line with that dark wit & humor for which her work is known. I love this series so much. I appreciate that she incorporates mudras as a sort of universal language, and just like my childhood, I could identify with every sign more than the last. It was hard for me to choose an image to feature. I finally chose Aquarius because it suited my perspective today. But they are all fantastic. Please take the time to pass an eye over each one.

FYI, all of the links to Lloyd’s work, on this page, will lead you to her Hatchfund campaign for “As Above, So Below.” This campaign will allow Terri to print & frame all 26 large-scale images to show at the StARTup Art Fair in 2018. You don’t have to donate to look at or appreciate the images (click on updates), but every $5 helps another artist fund her opportunity. You’ve been there, just steps away from grabbing what you want. Here’s your opportunity to help her grab just such an opportunity, and it offers rewards to boot.
