It is characterized by local, fresh ingredients and foods low in saturated fats and high in fresh vegetables and fruits with lean meats and seafood from the California coast with special attention paid to presentation–delicious & beautiful. But why leave out the butter? And, if it is from local, grass-fed cows, even better. Can’t we just learn to play well with others? Johann Gutenberg’s invention of movable type books ignited the explosion of art. These days the printed books that were previously published by publishers now can be read on line as ebooks.

What is the future?

Instead of having to interact with computers through not-so-intuitive and sometimes even counter intuitive devices like a computer mouse or track pad, soon users will be able to control their computers doing natural human movements such as gestures, whole-body movement, eye movement, and perhaps even such things as facial expressions.

Is it the end for books as we know them? Question the survival of paper, books, libraries in this digital age. The process of sending artworks through the mail, with the envelope, the stamp and the postmark as entire part of the mail-art-object make this process to what we call MailArt.

Editor’s Note: Once again, this is only Mail Art in the sense that most of the art will be mailed for the show. Unlike traditional Mail Art shows, any unsold work will be returned in December.

There are only so many hours in the day, and I can’t possibly keep up with every new cooking method, or you might never receive another Call from me again. I’ve also had to limit the number of art show invitations I accept for the same reason. This next Call will allow you to attend the opening regardless of WHERE you live or how much time you have. Did I mention it is free?

2014 Collectors’ Choice

ELIGIBILITY:
Open to all artists 18+

MEDIA: Paintings, mixed media, works on paper, photography, sculpture, installation, digital, video and performance.

DEADLINE: March 1, 2014

ENTRY FEE: $35 (USD) for 3 images, $5 each additional image, maximum 10.

JURORS: Each art collector may select one or more pieces by artists that are not currently represented in their private collection. Collectors’ names will be kept anonymous until the opening reception. Editor’s Note: My assumption is these are collectors that purchase work in the Sylvia White Gallery. Because they are anonymous, the best recommendation I have for research is to spend some time investigate the artists the gallery represents, since in theory, it is their work these collectors are purchasing–at least in part.

AWARDS: Selected artists will participate in 2014 Collector’s Choice exhibit April 23rd to May 24th, 2014 at Sylvia White Gallery.

SALES: Unless otherwise specified, accepted works will be considered for sale at the price indicated and 40% commission will be retained by The Sylvia White Gallery.

CALL for MAIL ART: Temporality

I only feel justified making pavlova during a holiday week. Pavlova (like the one at left by Tanya Zouevis) a little like two meringues kiss–through sweetened whipped cream. I think it has to do with the temporary nature of the fragile, crispy meringue and the fluffy (but easily flattened) whipped cream. We’ve just finished with New Year’s Day, and I’m already looking for a holiday. MLK Jr. Day doesn’t usually strike me as a day earmarked for indulgence. What’s after the next holiday? Truly living green in the kitchen is a touch complicated. Yes, I can buy locally sourced, sustainable foods. But, as we work toward designing a kitchen for the straw bale house we plan to build this year, do I really have it in me to skip out on a traditional stove/oven for a wood-burning or rocket stove/oven? Not so sure. But while I’m contemplating it, I can at least submit sustainably-themed work for this next Call. How about you?

The WEST (Water, Energy, Smart Technology) Summit presents actions to create long-term regional sustainability and resilience to climate change.

To inspire these actions, SSV is hosting an art exposition with a theme of The Future of Silicon Valley.

I’ve been searching for a new St. Valentine’s Day activity for years. Our tried ‘n’ true floor picnics with wine-steamed mussels went South when Jon developed an allergy to shellfish. We’ve been floundering since then. Usually we just revert to lamb chops and asparagus at home because we live in the 2nd most popular place to wed in the country. The Biennial Project is pleased to announce an open call to artists worldwide for Biennial Roadshow Marfa 2014 – an online juried competition and screen digital presentation.

Art will be presented as part of a giant screen digital display at The Biennial Roadshow Marfa 2014 Hoodang (that is a reception for you non-Texans) and Gala being held at world-renowned El Cosmico, the coolest gathering spot for trend-makers in the art-world Mecca of Marfa, Texas.

Now, you may ask…
Why Marfa, Texas?

It all started when the acclaimed minimalist artist Donald Judd left New York City in the 1970s for this dusty dot of a town. With the help of the DIA Foundation, Judd acquired an entire Army base, and before he died in 1994, he filled it with art, including light installations by Dan Flavin and Judd’s own signature boxes. Now it’s a whole creative community.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists

MEDIA: All media that can be captured in a still digital image

DEADLINE:
February 14, 2014

ENTRY FEE:
$35 for up to 3, $5 each additional

JURORS: Members of The Biennial Project – plus a special celebrity guest juror to be announced.

AWARDS: All selected work will be displayed on the Biennial Roadshow website gallery and in a blog posting that reaches an audience of 3,000. Work will also will be included in a digital art display to be shown at The Biennial Project’s Biennial Roadshow Marfa 2014 Hoodang and Gala.

Nat’l Juried Exhibition 2014

The Arts & Culture Alliance of Greater Knoxville announces a call for entries for its National Juried Exhibition of 2014. The Arts & Culture Alliance’s National Juried Exhibition was developed to provide a forum for artists to compete on a national scale and display their work. Approximately 40-50 fine art works encompassing all styles and genres from both emerging and established artists will be selected by the juror, Paul Collins, for exhibition in the main gallery.

ELIGIBILITY: All artists 18 years and older living in the US.

MEDIA: Entries must be original works completed within the last two years in the following categories: Painting (oil, watercolor, acrylic, pastel, digital, and mixed media), Graphic Arts (pencil, charcoal, pen and ink, conte, colored pencil, and printmaking), 3D (sculpture, ceramic, and fibers), and Photography.

DEADLINE: December 8, 2013

NOTIFICATION: Mailed January 6, 2014

ENTRY FEE: $40 for up to three works. Up to 3 additional entries may be submitted for $7/ea. Diptychs and triptychs are considered one work. Works are juried by digital images only. Each 2D work may be represented by one digital image, and each 3D work may be represented by up to three separate digital images: two full views and one detail view.

JUROR: Paul Collins is a multidisciplinary artist and curator from Nashville, TN. Paul makes drawings, paintings and sculpture that combine humor, tactility and observation to examine the world around us. Paul has an MFA from Yale and has been a resident at Skowhegan, Anderson Ranch Arts Center, and the Vermont Studio Center.

Paul is an enthusiastic collaborator and has curated shows or organized artist projects for a wide range of artists. Paul lives in Nashville, TN & works as Gallery Director and Asst Professor of Art at Austin Peay State University in Clarksville.

AWARDS: At least $1,000 in cash awards as designated by the juror

SALES: 25% commission (20% for check/cash).
