or butter AND beans

My husband is a string bean.  He is six feet tall and has spent most of the past 15 years struggling to hang on to 145 lbs all while consuming every meal as though it were it last.  Yes, it IS annoying.  But, changes in the fat & protein content in our diet over the past year have resulted in his gaining about 10 lbs and a pant size.  I’m tickled.  He’s still a string bean, but age is revealing a completely different figure.  This next Call asks for more figures revealed.  In the meantime, it is hollandaise & a spoon for dinner…

oh my!

My current kitchen kryptonite is the potato.  I love them. I love them. I love them.  They do not love me.  They spike my blood sugar–which is fun, I’ll admit.  But the eventual crash off the sugar results in my desire to stuff my face and take a 3-day long nap.  I never realized how many I ate until I started trying to reduce my sugar intake. Wish me luck.  This next Call will let you expose your own kryptonite, or not.  Take a look…

Red is Tuesday’s color. Red roses symbolize passionate love. Red is the color of Mars. Red is the color of blood with strong symbolism as life and vitality. Unfortunately for my husband, my late Aunt Mildred has been visiting.  Not literally–that would be creepy.  The long standing joke in my family is that my Aunt Mildred never finished anything until the last possible moment.  She hemmed her daughters’ prom dresses while they were in them trying to leave for the prom, and she left all of her kitchen cabinets wide open until she was finished with dinner.  This week alone, I have left kitchen cabinets wide open 4 times.  If I lose count, I only have to count the knots on his head.  So, my family would say, “Hi, Mildred.  Thanks for visiting.”  This next Call is a far better way to be wide open.  Trust me on this one…

Don’t throw tomatoes.  I never search my own blog history before I write these segues.  So unknown to me, I might be contradicting/repeating myself, but I am always being sincere–I swear.  Having said that, I remember having written about this topic many times.  That’s right, it is time for what-would-I-be-if-I-were-food.  This week, I’m thinking I would be an egg.  Really.  They are ultimate in adaptive foods.  They are in everything from cookies to lasagna.  My family OF THREE now eats approximately 3 dozen a week.  Really.  This episode of what-would-I-be-if-I-were-food was brought to you be this self-portrait Call–the ultimate what-would-I-be-if-I-had-only-one-shot-to-show-the-world experience.  Enough hyphens; I digress…

Social, cultural, political, gender, age and sexual orientation are part of our identities as individuals. Each of these elements play a part in how we identify within various constructs such as family, workforce, community and greater society.

ELIGIBILITY:  Open to all artists

MEDIA:  Must be 8” x 10”. No landscapes orientations accepted. B&W or color photography, digital photography or illustrations, and photos or scanned replications of drawings, paintings or sculptures. Self-portraits will not be returned; do not submit original prints/artwork.

NOTIFICATION:  “All artists will be featured. Artists are welcome to submit as many self-portraits as they wish; however, the gallery can only guarantee a minimum of six photos per artist will be displayed. ENTRY FEE:  No fee to enter

SALES:  Artwork will not be sold. (or returned)

Editor’s Note:  According the prospectus, this is a National Juried exhibit; however, it also claims to be open to ANY artist, and no juror is listed.  The quote above indicates it is a form of all-hung show.  So, my guess is it is only juried for awards.  However, the awards are not defined in the prospectus either.  Normally I wouldn’t publish a Call without getting all of these questions answered…but I  HAVE shown at this gallery myself and it was a FANTASTIC experience.  If you’re looking for a line on your resume, this is a great academic gallery with an historically great curatorial vision.
