TO HANDLE

Mozzarella-making is at a standstill at my house.  Okay, to be truthful, no one has ever mistaken this house for a cheese factory.  But lately, we’ve suffered the loss of one digital thermometer after another.  They don’t just stop; the temps slowly start veering from accurate.  I don’t normally advocate technology-forward kitchen gadgetry, but a digital thermometer results in far fewer failed batches of cheese–when it works.  I think it may be time to just shell out the bucks for one I KNOW won’t die easily.  I surrender.  You should surrender your digital art to this next call. SOUR?

I dream of lemons & olives–and corn, of course.  While dreaming of my future garden, I am excited at the prospect of growing non-GMO corn.  But, I also have fantasies of the produce I love most like lemons and olives, neither of which is native to my climate.  Is it just enormous hubris on my part to believe that if I try to grow them in a walipini that they will automatically surpass the quality of the native-grown varieties that I buy after their long trip to my local grocery store?  What is it about humans that makes us want to manipulate plants?  This next Call wants to see how you successfully manipulate plants in your art.  Take a look…

MENU

Frequently, the most memorable kitchen creations are happy accidents.  As much as I love a list, theme and a plan, sometimes I find myself in a situation that forces me to create a masterpiece from what I have on hand or try something new on the spur of the moment.  My favorite chicken-cheddar-broccoli soup came about as a necessary use of what I could find in the frig.  Now it is a winter menu staple in our house. This next Call is a show that is both un-juried & un-curated, but I KNOW this organization.  It will definitely be a show not to be missed, and you can be a part of it.  Please investigate this one…

NUTRITION

MREs now have a strong secondary market–doomsday preppers.  I don’t think that most people relish the idea of eating pre-packaged, processed military rations.  They have improved great (or so I’ve been told); pizza is even on the horizon.  However, I would think that preserving seeds, building hydroponic systems and farming fish would be better long-term solutions than MREs.  But then again, I’m not a doomsday prepper–so, what do I know?  This next Call wants your view on militarism, but I don’t think they are interested in the food options.  Take a look…

I am proud that we cook most of our meals at home; however, I feel compelled to be honest.  I live in a delivery wasteland.  I live in a town where the only thing you can get delivered is pizza.  If my local smoked brisket purveyor had wheels, we’d all be in trouble.  Here’s a call all about wheels.  Get a move on…

Learn more about the Wheels exhibit from the Darkroom Gallery!CALL for ENTRIES: Wheels

Next to the discovery of fire, the invention of the wheel has been the most significant achievement in the development of human culture and civilization.

The  horse drawn chariot revolutionized warfare, while the stone wheel of  the gristmill made it possible to process enough grain to feed  increasing numbers of city dwellers, and the oxcart provided  transportation for people and produce.  In the modern era, life would be  unimaginable without wheels.  America is truly a “car culture”. The rest of the world is not far behind.

How  do you envision wheels in your own life? Maybe you’re a car nut, a  lover of anything that looks sleek and goes fast, from a Grand Prix car  to a NASCAR racer, to a land speed record vehicle.  Or perhaps you’re  more aware of other types of wheels, such as those on bicycles, baby  carriages, or trains.  And then there are Ferris wheels and pinwheels,  skateboards and rollerblades.  Conveyer belts and steamboats. The  possibilities are nearly limitless. — from darkroomgallery.com
