COFFEE anyone?

Are you a borrower or a buyer?  Of books, I mean?  If you haven’t been to your local library recently, be sure to stop by. Many libraries are re-inventing themselves to look much like big box book stores complete with vendors of coffee & pastries.  They often also lend music, movies and even art.  This next Call comes from a library with a full-fledged art gallery adjacent.  This is for 3-d work only…

Check out this Call for Entries from the Friends of the Topeka & Shawnee County Public Library (Topeka, KS) for Topeka Competition 33 at the Alice C. pickled, not red

My pantry is a library of food fads and favorites.  You’ll find canned tomatoes from my mother (necessary to all of my favorite dishes) and high-fat coconut milk (necessary to all quiet indulgences).  Then there is the the fruit cocktail, quince marmalade, pickled herring, kimchi, a jar of black lime & a few dried apricots left over from some food obsession or experiment that either went awry or with which I got bored.  I can’t bring myself to get rid of the non-expired food no matter how random because they occasionally inspire genius.  This next Call displays the beauty of collecting and sometimes inspires genius.  This is a beautiful idea…

FOOD

My mother loves to read.  I grew up in a house full of books–including cook books.  Maybe I’ll add one of my own cookbooks to her collection some day.  One of my favorite cookbooks is The Vegetarian Epicure.  The author, Anna Thomas once said, “We all eat, and it would be a sad waste of opportunity to eat badly.”  That one statement changed my life and how I approach feeding both myself and my family.  Books have a way of doing that, changing things, I mean.  And, I would make the argument that food changes you as well, for better or worse, depending on your choices.  This next Call give you a chance to change a life with a book.  Investigate…

YOU
GLAD?

While in Phoenix recently, I discovered that our hosts were lucky to have an orange tree in their back yard.  Every morning I went out back to the sweet smell of orange blossoms and the overwhelmingly loud buzzing of bees.  I am inspired by the smell and sound.  I wonder if I can get an orange tree to grow in my Smoky Mountain yard?  This next Call is from California — where they have no problem getting orange trees to grow either.
