JUROR: Kaly Scheller-Barrett is a visual artist and secret poet hailing originally from Bavaria. Drawing heavily from her extensive training in craft technique, Kaly’s work attempts to blur the boundaries between fine art and craft practices, asking the viewer to un- and re-frame their preconceptions of material. Kaly recently completed an MFA in Sculpture at California College of the Arts where she taught Craft Theory and is currently the Associate Director of Hashimoto Contemporary.

AWARDS: Artists selected by the guest juror will receive a 2-page spread including a brief bio, website, and 2 images in print and digital formats. Published artists will receive a complimentary digital issue and will be listed on Create! Magazine’s website/social media & will be listed with images, details and information on theirr website/social media for life. All featured artists will automatically be considered for any upcoming curatorial projects & exhibitions organized by the Create! team.

JUROR: Emily Williams creates detailed glass sculptures inspired by the natural world. Her glass sculptures explore complex plant & sea life forms. Science & natural history have always played a strong role in her life. She began teaching sculpture in 1989 at Clarion University of PA. Over the years she has shared her passion for sculpture with her students. Williams has received a number of grants and awards through the years, including a Fulbright Hays grant to study in Italy. Williams was awarded her M.F.A. in Sculpture from Washington University in Saint Louis, MO.

AWARDS: Juror’s Awards will be named by the juror and announced at the Awards Reception on Sunday, November 12, 2017. These are cash awards for high-quality work. Purchase Awards will be named by the Alice C. Sabatini Gallery and will become part of the Topeka & Shawnee County Public Library’s permanent art collection. Awards are sponsored by the Friends of the Library.

Being a great cook, is an interdisciplinary skill. I know a handful of people who claim to be so uncreative that they “can’t draw a stick figure”. Clearly, creativity is not measured by the quality of your stick figures. But I am willing to accept those sorts of self-assessments –unless they come from a great cook. Composing the perfect dish requires great taste, some basic scientific knowledge, both an eye for design and nose for the perfect unexpected ingredient. JUROR: Heather Balchunas, originally from Westfield, MA has a BFA in illustration from Massachusetts College of Art in 1997. Being active in the art community is an important part of her growth as an artist. During her tenure at the Puppet Showplace Theatre, Balchunas found further creative stimulation through her position as an arts administrator. Whether it is puppet construction, theater, set design, or painting, one creative process influences another.

Dan Dez has been developing games since 2002. After receiving his BFA in Computer Animation at Ringling School of Art and Design, he started his game development career which has spanned around the country and across PS2, GameCube, XBOX, Xbox360, PS3, iOS, Android and PC. He is now and independent game developer who has always had an appreciation for Fine Arts. After graduating from RISD, Sean Hilts worked as freelance Graphic Designer, founded The Brothers Hilts, an illustration/design team, and is currently a Senior User Experience Consultant.

AWARDS: Cash awards will be given for Best in Show, determined by a panel of jurors & a People’s Choice award, chosen via online voting.

My pantry is a library of food fads and favorites. You’ll find canned tomatoes from my mother (necessary to all of my favorite dishes) and high-fat coconut milk (necessary to all quiet indulgences). Then there is the the fruit cocktail, quince marmalade, pickled herring, kimchi, a jar of black lime & a few dried apricots left over from some food obsession or experiment that either went awry or with which I got bored. I usually like to get food as close to the source or source process as possible. But, I cannot bring myself to love Mexican chocolate. Most of the world uses a conche for varying lengths of time to incorporate cocoa butter within chocolate. The longer the processing, the smoother the chocolate. But Mexican chocolate is still often stone-ground which produces a gritty texture. I am addicted to dark chocolate, but I want it smoooooth. Moving beyond verisimilitude abstraction frees the artist from the object. This opens the door for a vast variety of visual interpretations which indeed makes abstract art the most challenging. The artist’s facility with the materials & focus on surface makes abstraction particularly interesting today. But w/o personal content, symbolism or “event”, it risks becoming conceptually mundane & void of meaning.

Kunc currently serves as Cather Professor & Professor of Art at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, where she has taught since 1983. The Willa Cather Professorship was established in 2001 by the University of Nebraska-Lincoln to recognize faculty members with the rank of full professor who have established exceptional records of distinguished scholarship or creative activity.

Kunc has had one-person exhibitions at dozens of galleries throughout the United States and in the Czech Republic, Japan and Finland. Her works have been shown in more than 350 exhibits in the United States and 25 nations. She has taught workshops around the world, and has lectured as a visiting artist to over 200 institutions.

My mother loves to read. I grew up in a house full of books–including cook books. Maybe I’ll add one of my own cookbooks to her collection some day. One of my favorite cookbooks is The Vegetarian Epicure. The author, Anna Thomas once said, “We all eat, and it would be a sad waste of opportunity to eat badly.” That one statement changed my life and how I approach feeding both myself and my family.
