CALL for ENTRIES: Art & Technology

Click to Subscribe to www.ArtAndArtDeadlines.com by Email!A SOUPÇON of SOUP

My kitchen is fairly free of electronic gadgets.  While I appreciate the technology, a lack of space and economic tightwad-ness long ago put me on the path of manual gadgets.  You should have been there when I tried to explain to my kid how to use a non-electric, hand-held can opener.  Hilarity while trying to open a can of soup.  This next Call wants to know how technology affects your art.  And, it is free…

Check out this Call for Entries for Art & Technology from the Corcoran College of Art + Design’s Gallery 31 in Washington, DC.  There is no entry fee, and academic shows are always a feather in your cap.  Take a look…

I love winter squash; butternut is my favorite, I think.  Did you know that winter squash is actually grown in the summer?  Yep.  Have I told you this before?  It gets its name from the fact that when most summer squash is dead and gone, the tough rind of winter squash allows it to be stored, and eaten, all winter long.  This next call takes an interesting look at death, sort of.  Investigate…

I confess that I occasionally have dreams that a model of my kitchen will end up in the Smithsonian like Julia Childs’ did.  As glamorous as that sounds, everyone would see my 3 mismatched Fiestaware and shelves and shelves of white dishes.  Think white rice. Yawn.  Methinks life-size dioramas are a difficult tribute to pull off well.  This next Call doesn’t require life size.  Take a look…

Through That Which is Seen will represent a range of interpretations of the diorama on all scales.

They aim to exhibit pieces borrowing from museums’ use of the diorama as a means to inform and educate to works that turn the more conventional notion of diorama on its head.  From natural history displays to shoebox book reports…

The word diorama often conjures
memories from childhood.

However, dioramas can be found dotted throughout our daily lives.  Think about storefront displays, televisions, and medicine cabinets, to name a few.  Does a shower become a performative diorama when in use?  Or a car?

I googled “quince tree,” yesterday.  I am moving to a bigger house closer into downtown Gatlinburg, and my new house has two quince trees.  Related to the apple and pear, quince is added in small quantities to jams and sauces made of other fruits to add a little tartness.  Gotta love the tarty.  Maybe this next show will add a little TART your artistic resume.  It is worth investigating…
