JUROR: Kimble Bromley has taught painting and drawing for the past 26 years, most recently as Professor of Art at North Dakota State University. Previously, he taught at KY Wesleyan College, Owensboro Community College, DePaul University & So. Illinois University.

Bromley has served as a visiting artist throughout the upper Midwest, Ecuador and Mexico. He has painted abroad in Cuba, Jamaica, Ecuador & Mexico.

A recent series of paintings on the theme of Moby-Dick has been exhibited at the Plains Art Museum & at Chadron State College. Bromley’s interest in hypnosis has led him to research the significance of hypnosis on creativity, with results published in the Int’l Journal of Clinical & Experimental Hypnosis.

AWARDS: 5 Merit Awards & one Best of Show. Best of Show earns a solo exhibition in 2015 and an invitation to the Best of the Best exhibit.

I don’t eat food I can’t identify. I love it when readers send me foods, but one of you clearly has it out for me. A couple of weeks ago, someone sent a handful of chiltepin peppers–extremely hot, measuring between 50,000-100,000 Scoville units (jalepenos are 3,500–8,000). It took several days to research it. Alice Fogel, Juror for Writers and Musicians, is the State Poet Laureate of New Hampshire (USA) 2014 – 2019 and recent winner of the Nicholas Shaffner Award for Music in Literature. Alice is the author of Strange Terrain: A Poetry Handbook for the Reluctant Reader (Hobblebush Books, 2009). Alice teaches creative writing and poetry at Keene State College, Keene, NH & Landmark College, Putney, VT.

AWARDS: This is a free one-month residency. Your residency offers free WiFi, maid service, $1,000 pesos food stipend & utilities. You will are responsible for laundry, transportation, entertainment & add’l food. International calls can be made via skype.

I’m fascinated by the prospect of using veggie oil as an alternative fuel for powering cars & heating homes. I’m not ready to jump to the change; however, I do have some fundamental questions. Are fast food joints going to start get paid for their waste oil? Will traffic jams smell like french fries? What about the pesticides used on the crops from which the oil was processed? The name of this next Call probably doesn’t indicate the heating source, but we can always hope, right? Always investigate…

I’m craving purple potatoes. Potatoes have become scarce in my house lately. Paranoid about my family’s long history of diabetes, we are trying to limit our starch intake to see if my current symptoms can be controlled through diet. Because we already cut out gluten, I don’t really miss bread. We’ve never consumed a lot of rice & prefer spaghetti squash or zucchini noodles to pasta. But oh how I miss the potatoes– the beautiful, majestic purple ones particularly. I’m sneaking them in as the crust for quiche & pot pies, but the chips & fries & mash are all gone. I have to reserve all things majestic for this next call. Love this one…

Dr. Zona has received a number of national honors including the Gari Melchers Medal in 1996 for his outstanding contribution to American Art and culture. He is the author of numerous articles on art and art history and he is a major contributor to the recent Abrams publication Master Paintings from The Butler Institute of American Art.
