OPEN CALL: Peoria Art Guild

Learn more from the Peoria Art Guild!RARE

I like my eggs over easy and my steak & tuna rare, maybe medium rare–depending on where I am.  In restaurants, I’m rarely able to order anything rare; however, at home where I have a clearer picture of the origin and handling, everything is rare.  The opportunity offered by this next Call is equally rare.  Please pay attention to this one…

Check out this Open Call from the Peoria Art Guild (Peoria, IL) for 2015 Exhibitions.  And a rare opportunity to get telephone feedback about your entry.  Take a look…

My perspective on what makes for the perfect food shifts every few years.  Occasionally I get stuck in a phase for a while.  I worshiped all things spicy for 5+ years, and now I’ve been stuck on the piquant tang of goat cheese for 10+ years.  Taste buds only live about 10 days, so that gives lots of opportunity for a change of taste.  This next Call wants a female perspective, but not necessarily on food (although it isn’t excepted).  I encourage you to take on some academic shows.  How about this one, ladies?

PEANUT BUTTER

My culinary super power is making meals out of whatever I happen to find in the cabinets and making it seem purposeful. Sure, I can make a beautiful breakfast muffin from peanut butter and flax seeds.  And yes, I can make cookies out of peanut butter, honey and a single egg.  Okay, maybe I can just make anything out of peanut butter–the perfect ingredient.  But, not everything comes with the perfect ingredients.  While most folks won’t think the kit from this Call is perfect to create a masterpiece, you’ll have all the ingredients; just make it work. Take a look…

Though the idea of the ‘real’ has a multitude of meanings, it has been endlessly interpreted by artists and holds particular significance in our ever-changing world.

Artists approach reality and its relationship to representation through numerous types of media and with many distinctive standpoints. The term ‘reality’ has been consistently redefined and broadened to include new realms, like the virtual, the personal, the unscripted, the digital, the hallucinogenic.

My mother believes I am obsessed with food & cooking.  She finds it laughable that I have a bowl specific to whipping cream.  “Obsessed” is a strong word, possibly accurate, but definitely strong.  I do not own a single bowl to which I am well enough attached that I want to be buried with it like Mimbres bowls which have been found covering the face of the interred. Wear marks on the insides of those bowls show they were actually used for more than burial items.  That just makes me more respectful of my pottery bowls–lest it ends up covering my face for all of eternity.  Hmm. This next Call wants to see how YOU might be inspired by Mimbres potters.  This is a fascinating Call, and NOT restricted to clay media.  Take a look…

My true goal with food is the same with art: to see you be brave.  But being brave has to be based on knowledge, not whim.  This is true of both food AND art.  I would never have you enter a show without doing at least some preliminary research into the venue, gallery, organization or publication.  So I want to encourage you never to let a food enter your mouth without a little preliminary research into ingredients or origin.  Do me a favor, if I can’t get you to quit eating food with labels, at least read the label.  There are scary things hidden in lots of foods. This next Call wants to explore the hidden as well.  Take a look…

I wax nostalgic around holidays, and Mother’s Day made me think of pimento loaf.  When I was around 7, my father & I lived in Little Rock, Arkansas.  My Mom wasn’t around (that’s a long story for another time), and my Dad made all my lunches.  In his mind, pimento loaf was an appropriate lunch meat for a 7 year old.  At night, I would sneak to the bedroom door and whisper “peanut butter & jelly” while he prepared to make my lunch–subliminal influence.  I quit getting pimento loaf, and at least 3 days a week, I got Goober Grape®.  My Dad never mentioned it.  This next Call also conjures images of childhood for me.  Maybe my childhood wasn’t the standard.  Hmmm…
