HAD A COW

Have you heard about the cannulated cows?  Wow.  Who knew there were cows with port holes?  I was watching the Wisconsin edition of Weird Foods America.  And a professor at UW-Madison Department of Dairy Science was explaining how they put port holes in the side of cows to study the “ruminant’s digestive process” or the chewing of the cud aka “ruminating.”  Into my miscellaneous food trivia file THAT tidbit went; THEN, I received this Call from Ruminate Magazine.  Funny how things work out…

Check out this Call for Entries from Ruminate Magazine for the Kalos Visual Art Prize.  This is a well-documented juror and could be the very art publication opportunity for which many of you are seeking.  Take a look…

BANANAS

Everyone has to eat on the run sometimes.  Not every meal can be separated into  courses that stretch out over 2 hours.  But, compact meals don’t have to be of lesser quality just because they are rushed.  My favorite all-in-one breakfast is bananas with crunchy peanut or almond butter with a few berries chopped for the top. Compact but quality–just like this 4 in 1 Call.  Take a look…

If you work on a bicycle (cop, messenger, etc), how do you bring your lunch to work?  It isn’t as though bike messengers ride around on trikes with baskets on the back.  Are they, by nature of their transportation, doomed to eat out for lunch everyday.  I’m going to assume they make a special lunch bag just for cyclists.  This next Call is all about the bicycle as well.  Take a look…

What’s your favorite edible flower?  Most of us have had a lilac or rose petal infused whipped cream.  But I want to encourage you to try a little Calendula in place of saffron or peppery Nasturtium salad.  Just remember that blooms used in cooking must be orgainic–no exceptions.  Also, be sure to wash them well to remove all traces of fertilizers like manure.  This next Call is all about blooms, edible or not.  Take a look…

Fresh fish is so close I can almost taste it.  No really, my husband literally goes around the corner to fish for brook trout that my municipality stocks the local river with from the government-run hatchery to ensure tourists can fish.  You can’t make up a story like that.  Well, yes, you can, but I didn’t; I swear.  No lake trip necessary.  But a trip to the sea would make for great inspiration for this next Call.  Here’s another opportunity…

As I become more food wise, I also become more food wary.  Even proven combinations like chocolate & peanut butter or mozzarella & balsamic become tiresome.  And as I get bored, I start branching out and trying foods together just out of curiosity.  Watermelon with olive oil & basil is delightful, by the way.  That combination is as good as the combination award for this next call.  Take a look…

Why NOT food?  Yes, it is that time of year again.  I’ve received more hate mail from artists that think this blog would be far more effective if I would just quit talking about food.  The last time this happened, I actually added “a food-themed art blog” to the header.  To be honest, the half-dozen hate mail emails I get a year don’t really bother me.  But, I am always amazed at how much anger people can muster for the most insignificant issues.  This next call is equally obsessed with food.  I am in good company…

Food can be more than sustenance; food can be a passion, an entertaining and delicious escape, a comfort, or an obsession. Food is vital to our lives and is certainly at the heart of every celebration. Food is the subject of endless books, news reports, scientific studies, social media posts, and conversations. We are deeply interested in its sustainability, production, processing, distribution, scarcity, quantity, quality, composition, and price. This show invites artists to explore these and other food-related issues, from the profound to the ridiculous. –from prospectus

Chia seeds are fascinating. I have started using them to make raw, small-batch refrigerator jam from overripe fruit.  Yum.  The seeds are hydrophilic, absorbing up to 12 times their weight in liquid when soaked. While soaking, the seeds develop a mucilaginous gel-like coating that gives my jam a fantastic texture.  I feel a little like a mad scientist every time I use them, ha.  Here’s a science (& art) call for the Chicago area.  Investigate…

Ability to whisk PROPERLY is an earmark of a great cook.  To many people, it seems insignificant, but once you’ve made hollandaise or mayonnaise without use of a blender or food processor, you’ll never look at a whisk the same way again.  And sometimes, the whisk is just the RIGHT choice.  Learning the balance and technique of the constant motion just takes time.  This next Call is all about motion, but you don’t have a lot of time left…
