CALL for ENTRIES: Female Spirit

Learn more from the R Dixon Gallery!pink SUCKS

Did you know straws are a “girl thing”?  Me neither.  While grabbing a quick snack while shopping last week, a server looked at my son and husband and said, “I know straws are a girl thing, but I brought them for you guys too.”  Have I missed out on some American sub-culture subtlety about beverage consumption along the way?  I’m not certain how a straw can embody the female spirit; however, this next Call is asking for art that does just that.  Take a look…

Check out this Call for Entries from the R. Dixon Gallery (Seneca Falls, NY) for By and About Women: celebrating the female spirit.  Deadline looming & this Call is NOT limited to female artists.  Consider a new gallery…

More and more people are farming.  There may be fewer commercial farms, but I find that more and more people are taking the time to grow something.  Not everything; just something.  This image (left) is from the Facebook feed of a friend of mine in the suburbs of Charleston, WV who is sprouting garlic for container gardening on his back patio.  He planted tomato seedlings in between the sprouted cloves.  It isn’t a huge endeavor, but he’ll have the best salsa of anyone in his neighborhood this summer.  LOVE.  This next Call celebrates roots in exactly the same manner.  Cultivate this one…

“Curious about histories, origins, and the beginning of things, we ask emerging artists to probe their genesis – the dawning of a tribe, the annals of ancestry, the birth of a movement.  Those catalytic moments in time that give rise to new ethos. We also invite artists working with organic and/or sustainable materials to apply. Our aim is to feature projects born out of a response to horticulture, urban farming, and agriculture; or narratives that invoke our natural world. ” –from onthegroundfloor.co

CALL for ENTRIES: Sensory Overload

Learn more from Whitdel Arts!an APPLE a day

So I picked a peck of peppers today.  Not really.  But I did buy a bushel of apples out of cold storage from my local orchard.  I just couldn’t wait any longer for a sensory overload.   I usually wait for the first bite of sauteed ramps, but that wasn’t enough this year.  So, I am home with a bushel of Mountain York’s.  This week will be filled with the making of apple sauce, apple chips, apple butter, and fresh apples in everything from chicken salad to peanut butter sandwiches and pancakes.  An orchard grown apple (even out of cold storage) is overwhelming abundant in flavor.  I can’t wait.  You don’t have to wait either; this Call is looking for YOUR sensory overload.  Love this theme…

not winter

I’ve just gotten used to not being cold, and recipe sites are already touting Fall foods like acorn squash.  Cut it out.  We’ve all learned to live with the sales of holiday-themed items a full two to three months BEFORE the holiday.  But, I refuse to start buying winter foods during the bounty of Summer.  Why would I give up a beautiful zucchini blossom for cinnamon-laden, pumpkin-flavored everything?  I simply will not give in on food.  If you want to dream of Fall, this next Call is a BEST sort of reason to think of Fall in advance.  Take a look…

Most people associate Georgia with peaches, or maybe peanuts (thanks to Jimmy Carter), but I always think of barbeque ribs or creamy lobster bisque.  Random, I know.  I grew up in a suburb of Atlanta as a young girl, and barbeque ribs were a standard at least one night a week during the summer.  Once a teenager, I made treks to Savannah with my mother to have table-side Caesar salad and lobster bisque from our favorite restaurant.  I suppose every person’s food story is a unique work of non-fiction.  This next Call is your non-fiction opportunity to tell your own solo story.  Take a look…

My son is learning to cook.  More accurately, my husband & I are forcing our son to cook dinner once per week.  He has shown no really interest in producing meals–only eating them.  So, we are not giving him an option.  My concern is that if he doesn’t learn how, he’ll be forced to eat commercially-processed crap his entire life.  He doesn’t like cooking.  Doing anything solo the first time is scary, but my kiddo has turned it into a pressure-cooked affair.  Let’s hope it gets easier.  This next Call is YOUR chance to do art solo.  Don’t stress, just submit a proposal…

I find myself conflicted over food technology.  While I appreciate the safety found in canning, freeze drying, pasteurization and more, I also have an undeniable desire to eat organic, heirloom varieties grown by my own hand.  I know the answer is balance, but I remain conflicted about my relationship with the technological aspect of the food I consume–with every bite some days.  This next Call focuses on the interaction, emotional & otherwise, between humans and their technological objects.  This will be an intriguing show.  Take a look…

Intelligent Objects is an open call for those artworks that act as independent agents & explore the cross-section of analog & digital media. In this age, toasters communicate over the internet & robots vacuum our floors, this exhibition explores those artistic objects which appear to be responsive to our existence, or at least demand an empathy if not an emotion, that we give to sentient beings.  The art in this exhibition need not be kinetic or sculptural, it is open to any combination of traditional & new media.  Artistic “intelligence” may be static imagery, even represented by simple code. –from the prospectus

Smaller isn’t always the same.  Every member of my household is an avid label reader due to food allergies.  One of the most important lessons we have learned is that miniature and compact versions of foods are not necessarily the same, nutritionally speaking.  I find miniatures of candy bars are often sweeter due to a different ratio of ingredients than the originals.  Sometimes, they add thickeners or starches to help them better hold their more compact shape as well.  Be careful.  This next show is all about the VIRTUES of being compact.  Take a look…
