CALL for ENTRIES: Niche Awards 2016

Learn more about the 2016 Niche Awards!HERBS
only smaller

Niche market foods abound.  Don’t you ever wonder who decided, “I want to grow lavender mint microgreens when I grow up”?  But someone grows lavender mint microgreens.  I used to wonder if there was a place for me in the market to make goat cheese for a living, but I have dismissed feeling like the market was too small to support my goat cheese obsession.  But now the idea of raising goats and making cheese sounds like I want to be an agricultural giant by comparison to lavender mint microgreens, eh?  This next Call is all about the niche market.  Take a look…

Check out this Call for Entries from NICHE Magazine for the Niche Awards 2016–a celebration of fine craft.  Many of you are producing both fine art and fine craft; maybe this one for you…

CALL for PROPOSALS: Solo Show Opportunity

and one alone

I don’t share well.  I don’t share anything well, but food is the worst.   I am not proud of it.  Maybe it is an only child thing.  I can logically know that a dish will be too much for me, but I will still not agree to share instead.  If I agree to a lets-get-one-of-each-and-share deal, we have to quite literally cut them in half upon arrival & exchange the halves.  Otherwise I spend the meal obsessing about whether or not my husband will eat more than his half.  I fall short of counting french fries–but just barely.  So, my submission to this next Call will likely be a solo one (although my better self sometimes triumphs); however, you are welcome to contemplate sharing.  Take a look…

GROW

I have been searching for my place–in art, in music, in food, in the world.  I have a long history of wanting to do everything at all times.  I want to get it all right, experience it all, eat it all, see it all, do it all.  As a result, I often get none of them quite right.  Silly to some, I believe the answer is geographical.  I continue to seek smaller spaces and places–one town smaller than the next.  Now I seek space, acres inside the next smallest town.  Not isolation so much as controlled interaction.  Space to think.  Space to choose.  Space to grow.  Where is YOUR space?  Your place?  The next Call wants your answers–or questions.  What do you have to say?

Check out this Call for Entries from Annmarie Sculpture Garden & Arts Center (Solomons, MD) for Finding Our Place: The Geography of Art.  $25 entry, epic jurors & great art, time & time again. Take a look…

Finding Our Place

“If you don’t know where you are, you don’t know who you are.”
–Wendell Berry

A sense of place can be an essential element in artists’ creative life, and frequently informs their subject matter, materials, style, approach, studio location, and more.  Whether it be ones childhood “primal landscape,” full of memories of home and family, or the pull of a dramatic landscape, or a connection to a particular place based on historical and cultural events, geography calls to the imagination.  As the world shifts to a focus on the virtual, how has this impacted artists’ work?  Has it resulted in a weakening of a sense of place, or has the meaning of place simply adjusted to this new reality?  This exhibit invites artists to explore this issue from either or both sides, and to celebrate what place means to them.  What informs your work?  A physical location or a virtual world?  Do you know “where you are?” — from annmariegarden.org

In our continuing efforts to downsize in preparation for “tiny living”, I downsized myself out of garden space.  We moved back to our previous 2-acre, mountain-top abode, but anything other than container gardening is impossible with out a major terracing project to provide flat space on the side of the mountain.  So, we’re going to attempt to grow a few squash & cucumbers on the deck using the railings as support.  But, considering the fact that my dog has tree’d several black bears during the past two-weeks.  Am I simply creating a buffet dinner on my porch?  Nature. My kitchen is now tiny.  My family has been downsizing year by year in prep for permanent tiny living.  My kitchen/dining are is 10′ square.  Not small by NYC efficiency standards.  For a cabin in the woods serving a family of 3 foodies, it IS small space for a double sink, full-size stove, refrigerator, dishwasher, microwave, kitchen table, 4 chairs, & dog bowls.  We adapted an under-the-stairs closet as a pantry, created a custom overhead pot rack to free up cabinets space and hung a small folding step stool on the wall to allow easy access to cabinet top space.  It is working.  In fact, I might be able to work in LESS space.  Who knew my space adaptive efforts would be both useful AND a stylish upgrade to my mountain-top kitchen?  But can I apply those skills to this next Call?  Just maybe…

“We bathe in the beauty of color and spin thousands of words describing the experience that the cone cells transmit to our brain. In reality, they are not nearly as numerous as our rods, the cells that register light and dark, the black and white of our experience.
