The Gift
You Never
Wanted

We are often given gifts that are unsightly, unseemly, or straight out of a nightmare. Often these “gifts” stay with us, sometimes for the better. The gifts we never wanted take many forms, both physically and emotionally. In the end we have to ask—are gifts given for the sender or the receiver?

For the exhibition The Gift You Never Wanted, Non-Fiction Gallery seeks works of art that explore the idea of the gift as a burden or a blessing.

goodness

My kitchen smells of heavenly green cardamom.  It IS expensive, and I AM cheap.  But, I never regret the purchase.  I offset the expense by buying it ground instead of in the pod.  It loses flavor quickly when you store it ground, but cardamom is used in a huge number of cultures for dishes both sweet & savory.  It is a staple of Indian & Thai foods, but it is also found in Nordic breads & sweet treats.  You will love what cardamom will do for rice pudding or hot tea.  This next Call is international, just like my kitchen.  Take a look…

FERNS

How many perennial vegetables do you know?  There are a few like asparagus & horseradish that aren’t strangers, but there is a whole world of beauties like Jerusalem artichokes, Egyptian onions, Good King Henry & yummy ostrich ferns (aka fiddleheads).  Doesn’t the idea of planting a vegetable once and harvesting for up to 20 years sound like a dream? Granted there are the complications of disease control, smaller harvests & garden takeover, but sometimes one planting can be fruitful for years.  This next Call only happens once per year, but it could pay off for years to come.  Investigate the options…

BEANS

I don’t drink coffee.  For all of my open-palate talk, there are things I am simply not interested in consuming.  Coffee is one of those things.  For many of you, this is heresy, sacrilege, blasphemy.  I suspect it would be like my reaction to people that don’t like chocolate–incomprehensible. But, I break my own rules.  When I go to the “home” of something, I feel obligated to partake.  Don’t you have to drink coffee in Washington?  Maybe I could just visit Java Jive and listen to a few tunes in the giant coffee pot instead.  Or consume a little art just a couple of hours down the interstate.  I’m game. How about you?

I have a tattoo.  It is apple-shaped.  I know–food, again.  It was really meant to be about food, technically.  I went to New York City, aka the Big Apple, for my graduate school interview, and decided to get a little, nickel-sized apple tattoo to remind me of my trip to the Big Apple.  Yes, I was sober.  Turns out that I’m a bleeder, so it is my only tattoo.  But, I really love them.  This next Call wants your take on tattoos.  Take a look…

Blue iced cookies & cakes are everywhere this time of year, so I am going to say this again… step away from the blue food.  The closest thing to naturally occurring blue food is squid ink.  Eat all the squid ink your heart desires, but please stop buying blue Jell-o, Koolaid, popsicles & icing.  You’re only encouraging them.  If you need to experience ALL the colors of the rainbow (including blue), try this next Call instead.  Take a look…
