White chocolate is not chocolate.  Every year I have to remind a few folks.  Those cocoa bean solids are the defining issue.  I’ll eat just a kiss, or a smooch if you will, of white chocolate each year.  But when I say, “I’m craving chocolate”, the answer is never white-chocolate-macadamia-nut anything.  Just to be clear.  Consider this my yearly white chocolate PSA.  And to be honest, I’d rather have my smooches & kisses a very different way –like this Call.  Take a look…

“Brancusi did it. Rodin did it. Even Tamara de Lempicka did it.

“The kiss has left its mark on many works of art, from the stone carvings of Constantin Brancusi to its marble predecessor sculpted by Rodin. With her kiss, Tamara de Lempicka delivered a woman swept off her feet by a high society gentleman, clad in an oily top hat, against the cubist backdrop of a city port. Each kiss carries its own sentiment.

“When lips meet, they promise temporary escape or a lifetime of devotion. When tongues touch, they deliver notes to our lovers, detailing desire or a lack thereof.” –from onthegroundfloor.co

We are all careful about dairy products & cross contamination as a result of years of PSA-style campaigning about food-borne illness.  But, did you know that leafy greens are among the most dangerous types of foods?  Remember the bagged spinach epidemic from a few years ago.  Leafy greens are at high risk for contamination from manure in the growing process.  You’re not off the hook for eating greens, you just have to promise to wash this type of food really well.  This Call wants to know your type; food references are optional.  Great opportunity at a great gallery…

FUNGI

I’m afraid of eating wild mushrooms.  Correction, I am afraid of improperly identifying a mushroom as edible and doing unexpected harm to my family.  So, I have been trying to decide whether or not to grow them myself.  Growing mushrooms at home always conjures images of damp, basement-like conditions.  But research indicates I can crow them on logs in dappled shade, above ground, among the living, with fewer creepy-crawlies. This next Call want to know your views, wild OR domestic, but no veggies–just animals.  Take a look…

VINAIGRETTE

I eat in my car A LOT.  This has always been true.  Once upon a time, those meals consisted of a generous amount of fast food of the drive thru variety.  However, as my tolerance for processed food has waned but my travel for the job has increased, I find that packing food for the road has become more and more common.  Eating a decent meal is no longer an out of bounds activity for the car.  I do pull over to eat, but my seat belt has the permanent aroma of Italian dressing.  This next Call wants to know what YOU consider out of bounds.  This is a great opportunity and a beautiful space…

Have you ever eaten a persimmon?  I am headed out for a road-trip soon, and I am super excited about eating persimmon pudding in Indiana.  Persimmons are typically cultivated in the southeastern U.S. but grow WILD throughout much of Indiana.  I think their love of this weird little fruit has resulted in some of the best uses, including the notorious pudding.  Give a persimmon a try.  Make sure it is ripe though; trust me.  This next Call IS ripe and from Indiana.  (I know.  Bad.  Sorry.)  This is a great call…

BLACK TRUFFLE

What happens when food imitates visual art? At Art Basel Hong Kong in 2015, that question was answered by 10 stellar chefs.  The image to the left is L’Atelier de Joel Robuchon combination of French sea bass, seasonal black truffle, celery mousse line & Malabar pepper sauce to recreate Zao Wou-ki’s dark abstract work.   This dish, and at least 9 others in this vein, were available at restaurants in the Hong Kong area back in March.  I can’t know how tasty it was, but, my oh my, how beautiful.  This next Call wants your surreal work, but not the culinary version.  What was it Benjamin Franklin said? ““Guests, like fish, begin to smell after three days.  This exhibit is longer than 3 days, so hold the fish

SQUASH

While most of the world is obsessed with pumpkin-flavor, not actual pumpkin, I am reveling in the other winter squashes — butternut, acorn & patty pan.  My farmers market sells these squash, in season, for $1 each.  Split & roast one of each squash, scoop out the insides and puree through the food processor, add a little salt, pepper, garlic and a touch of curry or a few red pepper flakes, and the resulting squash soup is divine.  It looks like baby food, but the flavor is unbelievable.  I makes lunch for all three of us for at least two or three days.  Squash, just squash.  It’s a solo act, just like this next Call.  Take a look…

EATS

My grocery bill is absurd.  I’m not having dinners of foie gras & truffles.  In fact, most of our meals are vegetable laden.  I try to stop by the farmers market at my local apple orchard.  This week, it was $25 for apples, onions, 4 sweet potatoes, 3 bell peppers & 2 eggplant.  As you might imagine, I then proceeded to spend a fortune at the grocery store to supplement my farmers market finds.  I have a family of only three people + my four-legged child.  I buy in-season, cost-conscious items.  I consider myself a master food shopper, and I can barely hang on to a healthy menu.  How are people without access to locally-grown produce options supposed to avoid eating processed food?  The economics of hunger are devastating.  This next Call is an excellent use of YOUR $25.  Take a look…

My talent lies with liquids.  That is, my cooking skills are at their best with sauces, soups, stews & the occasional bisque.  There are many Seinfeld-esque Soup Nazi comments in my house regularly, but I am so excited that winter is here.  There is something about the delicate balance of flavors & how they change in a liquid that create the perfect puzzle for me  to solve.
