CALL for ENTRIES: Emotion & Energy of Color 4

Learn more about the Emotion & Energy Of Color 4 exhibit from art-competition net!a clean PLATE

I had to throw out everything in my fridge & freezer Sunday.  Due to the wildfire, my house was without power for a week.  My groceries stewed.  It wasn’t pretty.  But, in my effort to find a silver lining, I will admit that a clean refrigerator is liberating.  Now it is slowing filling with mustard greens, pickled beets & craft beer against a stark white background.  It is a whole new energy like this new Call.  An art publication opportunity…

Check out this Call for Entries from Art-Competition.net for Emotion & Energy of Color 4. $20 entry & no shipping.  The media is pretty wide open too. Take a look…

I crave comfort food. I have always been an emotional eater, and in my defense, this year HAS sucked. Bizarre business twists, unexpected career delays, personal financial crisis followed by health issues, a relentless year of election propaganda and now a wildfire, a house robbery & now more dreams delayed.  I want baked goods.  Is there a healthier way to tackle trauma?  Of course.  Bite me.  I need the comfort of things familiar like baked goods — and the venue for this next Call.  It is a soft spot for me, and I want it to be for you.  Love…

I grew up in Charleston, South Carolina, one of the premiere food towns in the U.S.  We were always proud of both the seafood & the fried chicken in the Holy City.  And while Charleston-ians still have every reason to be proud of the fresh sea fare & deep-fried poultry, the food scene has developed as a shining example of the best of ALL things edible –French, Cajun, Greek & most other imaginable cuisines.  The South isn’t just Southern, just like the jurors of this next Call.  Investigate this one…

CALL for ENTRIES: Order & Chaos

Learn more about the Order & Chaos exhibit at the Fred Parker Giles Gallery at EKU!PAPER or plastic?

Do you prefer boxes or bags in your pantry?  I like the structure of boxed pasta, beans & cereal, but I love the price of most things bagged.  I prefer not to store things in plastic, but I’m not convinced the process used to create cardboard is any better.  I own a lot of glass which inevitably involves breakage and the energy consumption involved in cleaning and/or sterilization. It can be difficult to distinguish the order from the chaos, but this Call offers us a second change.  Give it a shot…

CALL for ENTRIES: Stories, Parables & Tall Tales

Learn more about the Stories, Parables & Tall Tales exhibit from Studio Channel Islands!DINNER anyone?

I’ve been eating with strangers lately.  That is, I’ve had the privilege of eating family-style  –from farm-to-table dinners with 20 at a table, or a restaurant with 8 at a table.  It reminds me of stories my grandmother used to tell of Sunday dinners in Big Stone Gap, Virginia, when her family, that included 10 children, would just lay a sheet over the home-grown & prepared food on the dining room table after everyone ate, just in case friends or neighbors dropped by.  They didn’t have much except a wealth of food to share. I love the planned inclusion of unplanned guests and the stories that must have inevitably followed. This next Call offers you an opportunity to tell your own story.  Don’t miss the opportunity…

JUROR: Often dreamlike and enigmatic, Christine Brennan’s work features a host of symbolic and allegorical reference. Brennan’s images draw from the unconscious, leading the viewer into richly-lit narratives that evoke personal stories and associations.  As a painter and printmaker, Brennan works in oil on paper or board and hand-colored linoleum block prints. Never setting out to illustrate a specific theme or story, the artist creates each image as she goes, changing and shaping it along the way.

Grocery lists should be derived from menus, however, I lack the discipline to make a menu every week and the fortitude to endure a grocery trip long enough to sustain a week of daily menus.  As a result, we buy random groceries and the menus are developed based on what we happen to have on hand at the moment.  The advantage is that sometimes we trip across unbelievable recipes just by narrowing the ingredients by availability.  This next Call chooses a theme AFTER receiving the submissions.  How fun is THAT? Underground farming is a thing now.  I’ve been looking for a “perfect property” for years now.  Something small, affordable, naturally rich soil and easily irrigated.  It is a huge wish list.  But now, there are farmers that are choosing to go underground, create their own soil conditions, or use looped hydroponic irrigation — making double use of every square foot.  It is kind of brilliant.  This next Call comes from underground as well.  Investigate Excavate…
