My three favorite restaurants are all in North Carolina featuring American, Spanish & Italian cuisines. They are all within a few blocks walk of each other. Is it the education system that produces the culinary prowess? Is it the city that attracts it the creative? Is it the small farm specialization that inspires clever savory vision? One of my favorite holidays looms near — Halloween. There are lots of treats I only make on holidays, and meringue cookies are always a Halloween request. Years ago I made meringue “ghost” cookies, which are just meringue cookies with eyes of blueberries, chocolate chips or currants; everyone was hooked. Now they’re expected, of course. Light, crispy, ghostly sweetness. Traditions are funny sometimes. This next Call is looking for your ghosts. Your depiction doesn’t have to be literal, and the media is wide open. I eat lots of pizza, an odd side result of my job as a performing musician. Common menu offerings include lettuce-topped Mexican, Greek, thick-crust Sicilian, Californian, the New York slice, the ubiquitous pineapple Hawaiian, and of course, deep-dish Chicago style. There are many others, but these are the standards. I love how, outside the area for which they are named, they consistently have similar the toppings that aren’t always grounded in anything more than habit. Did you know California-style always has sun-dried tomatoes? Do you know why? Me either. Food stereotypes are funny & often well-intentioned, but odd & often very abstract. Food substitutions have become second nature to me. I live with & cook for lots of people with food sensitivities, health concerns & philosophical/ethical food issues. I have to be able to accommodate those folks without advance warning and without blowing my food budget. Black beans make great gluten-free brownies; bananas work as egg replacement in many desserts & breads. Lemon zest can be a fantastic salt alternative, & nutritional yeast is a great stand-in for Parmesan. It isn’t about faking an ingredient; it is about creatively coming up with an alternative texture or taste. This next Call is all about the creative. I like this opportunity. Is this one for you?

JUDGING: F.E.A.S.T. is a public meal designed to use community-driven financial support to democratically fund projects that use art & creative thinking to impact the community. The meal will take place on September 24th. Patrons will give a donation for which they receive a locally-produced & prepared meal & a ballot. Diners listen to & review project proposals & converse with the thinkers behind each idea.

AWARDS: F.E.A.S.T. attendees cast a vote for their favorite proposal, and by the end of the event, the artist who garners the most votes is awarded a grant comprised of the event ticket money.

I’ve been hired to write a series of budget dessert recipes that encourage local, organic sourcing. I try to limit my personal intake of sugar because I am so easily addicted. As a result, I am struggling to balance the sweetness in these concoctions. I don’t want to use artificial sweeteners. Honey is a flavor, not a just a sweetener. The FL3TCH3R Exhibit is focused on work with strong social and political content. Work entered in the exhibit should reflect current issues that affect contemporary culture and investigate societal and political concerns. Diverse media and approach to the theme are encouraged.

ELIGIBILITY: U.S. artists age 18+

MEDIA: All 2D, 3D, performance & installation & video art are eligible. Due to space & logistical considerations, large-scale & complicated installation is not encouraged.

JUROR: Painter Anita Kunz has work in the permanent collections at the Library of Congress, the Canadian Archives in Ottawa, the Musée Militaire de France in Paris, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Rome, and a number of her Time Magazine cover paintings are in the permanent collection at the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, DC. She received the Les Usherwood Lifetime Achievement Award in 1997 from the Advertising and Design Club of Canada. She has received an honorary doctorate from the Ontario College of Art and Design in Toronto and a second from Mass Art College of Art and Design. Kunz was appointed Officer of the Order of Canada, Canada’s highest civilian honor, and recently received the Queen’s Jubilee Medal of Honor. Additionally, she will be inducted in the Museum of American Illustration Hall of Fame in New York in 2017.

AWARDS: Best of Show $300, 2 Awards of Excellence $100 ea., Sammie L. Nicely Appalachian Artist Award $100 & Reece Museum Award $100. Other awards TBA.
