When left alone, I tend to eat solitary foods.  I stood in my kitchen and ate cottage cheese (from the container & yes it was end of the container).  For breakfast yesterday, strawberries.  For Monday’s snack, pickled beets. The Gibbs Street Gallery offers exhibitions that explore the breadth of contemporary art featuring emerging to mid-career artists. Exhibits reflect a wide range of media and experimental approaches that offer the viewer unexpected interactions with art. The gallery is approximately 1,100 square feet with 16 ft. ceilings. ARTIST of the DAY: Mark Castator

My brain spins. And my mouth usually keeps up. I turned to my husband recently & asked, “Are your ears tired? I can’t seem to shut up.”  I struggle to quiet my mind, hence twenty years of insomnia. Some days I require a sole project or a single object upon which to focus to have a more solitary soundtrack in my head. I find the work of today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, Mark Castator, requires me to concentrate on the forms within the form which is oddly calming. (continues below)

Cold weather can be lovely –in its season. But I crave blue skies. I get a few during winter’s grip; however, as March marches forward, I am growing intolerant of the gray days. My optimistic nature makes me want to find the beauty in the gray.  Imagine my delight to find the work of today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, Barbara Witkowska with all his glorious shades of gray. I believe the concept of “edible” is abstract, not just subjective.  Technically, anything that doesn’t kill you is edible.  Well, really, you can still eat things that WILL kill you.  So, I suppose if you are physically able to consume something, it is edible.  So, maybe the notion of “eatability” is the abstract one.  Why would someone pay a fortune to eat a fertilized duck egg?  Because they are yummy? Doubtful.  But, the precedent for eating eggs and eating ducks has been set, so I understand why it would occur to someone to try.  But coconut?  Green or furry, how did someone look at a coconut and say, “let’s eat one”?  Abstract.  This next Call is also purely abstract.  Take a look…

Bugs, both lady & stink, invade my house every winter.  I can only assume their numbers increase wildly due to the need to seek warmth.  The ladybugs that everyone adores are different that the erratic, mean-spirited beetle variety that haunts the windows & lampshades in my home.  And the stinkbugs, oh my.  Did you know that National Geographic wrote an article a few years ago suggesting that these odoriferous creatures add an apple flavor to sauces?  Thanks, but no. I’ll stick with the orchard original.  This next Call is the only place I want to see swarms. How about you?

AWARDS: Annmarie will present cash awards to outstanding work.  Jurors will review installed works for award selection. Awards are contingent upon sponsors; typically there are three awards of approx. $250 plus an invitation for a solo/group show.

Cooking is a constant exercise in recycling & upcycling in my house.  A whole chicken will provide a dinner, chicken salad for lunch, broth for future soups, scraps for breakfast hash or lunch tacos plus a treat or three for the pup.  My least favorite of all these is the original chicken dinner.  The upcycled & recycled varieties are always superior, just like the media for this next exhibit.  Never have an empty plate by expanding your menu by incorporating what you already do…

She currently sits on the boards of the environmental organization the Reuse Alliance and the arts organization Pentacle.

AWARDS: Best of Show Gold $1000, Most Innovative Use of Materials $500, People’s Choice $250, Curator’s Choice $250 & ten $100 Certificates of Recognition.

In addition to being the Editor of AAAD, I spend a considerable amount of time consulting with artists individually on branding their work, unifying their message & the philosophical packaging of their work for consumption.  Technology is vehicle that allows delivery of work that is complete in contrast with that very technology.  I appreciate the push to expand my knowledge, to remain relevant, to drag a few artists wit me. SUNCHOKE

Winter vegetables are a problem.  I am allergic to parsnips, tired of ever-present potatoes, refuse to pay $6 for a head of cauliflower, and am the only person left on the planet not addicted to kale.  This leaves the cabbage family, spinach –and Jerusalem artichokes.  I can’t remember the last time I ate time had this lovely tuber.  One of the best things about root vegetables is they are rarely bought excessively under-ripe, and since most folks roast or mash them, they are rarely too ripe.  That makes them easy to buy and uncommonly wasted.  Where are my keys? Road trip.  I am headed to the grocer, but you should head to this next Call for road trips.  Take a look…

I’ve been searching for the perfect new home. I have fallen in love with the most imperfect 10 acres.  Someone else out bid me because my budget is ridiculous.  Two weeks later, their contract dissolved.  I have a second day to hold the hope of imperfection in my heart.
