ARTIST of the DAY: Peter Vial

Reflections no. 4: Politics(mosaic 56 x 15 x 36 cm) by Peter Vial
Reflections no. 4: Politics (mosaic 56 x 15 x 36 cm) by Peter Vial

“Watch from your gut, listen to your soul” Peter Vial

___

We are, in total, comprised of the pieces and parts of our experience –both those celebrated and those survived.  The mosaic work of today’s AAAD Artist of the Day Peter Vial speaks to that patchwork in such a visual way.  This work is so relatable, even though some of it is incredibly large.  I bristle at the ubiquitous Nietzsche what-doesn’t-kill-you quote because it typically comes across as condescension or gaslighting, but Vial’s sculpture is a celebration of life, regardless of circumstance. There IS a difference, and I appreciate that sort of optimistic realism.  No unicorns & rainbows.  Thanks, Peter.

more than ORANGE JUICE

Have I told you I was born in Florida? We lived there of and on until I was 5 years old.  My most distinct food memories are from Florida.  I remember accidentally dumping spaghetti on my dad’s lap because I forgot to brace the drop leaf table.  I remember loving hot dogs from Dixie’s in Treasure Island and momentarily believing I was abandoned because the line had moved and I hadn’t.  Spaghetti and hot dogs. Expand your range of Florida experiences with the next Call.  You won’t regret it.

Winter is the season of indulgent foods.  Comfort foods have changed for me over the years, but they still tend to be slow-cooked, hearty fare. My favorite indulgences are french onion soup with fresh parmigiana, Swiss steak over pureed potatoes, masala laden with cauliflower & chickpeas or black-bean chili with a squeeze of lime.  And don’t forget the gulab jamun.  Luckily winter comes but once a year –much like this next Call.  Indulge…

I acquire things in threes & fives.  I’m partial to the odd, regardless of the source.  My mother likes the evens.  I have three wasabi turtles; she has a favorite pair of berry bowls.  I have five sets of chopsticks; she has pair of porcelain egg cups.  My collecting has been purposefully curbed due to a conscious decision to own less, but “three” is still a set for me.  This next Call offers a $300 prize & the possibility of becoming part of collection.  This one is quarterly…

“Bad Thoughts II” (bronze, patina) by Erwin Wurm

“If you approach things with a sense of humor, people immediately
assume you’re not to be taken seriously. But I think truths about
society & human existence can be approached in different ways.
You don’t always have to be deadly serious. Sarcasm & humor
can help you see things in a lighter vein.”

During this month, during this season, we all need to figure out how to arm ourselves with humor in defense of the heaviness of being.  Today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, Erwin Wurm, has such a light touch.  The humor, irony even, helps feel pro-active without dismissing the problem. Thanks, Erwin.

I lamented to a friend about my having to buy frozen dinners to supplement my child’s homemade options due to scheduling conflicts, and that session of whining spun off into a whole other discussion about why we quit calling them “TV dinners”.  My friend optimistically believes it is because people, generally speaking eat in front of the TV less often.  However, I suspect it is because we eat FROZEN meals far more commonly than just in front of the TV.  I am grateful there are some better options out there. So, if you’re standing at a counter, fork in hand, eating a frozen dinner & scrolling art deadlines on your phone, use it as inspiration to consider all thing frozen for this call.  Take a look…

“Hell has frozen over. The trees have lost their leaves, the sun is shining fewer and fewer hours everyday…and yet there is still immense beauty in the world.
