CALL for PROPOSALS: Solo 2018

Learn more about the 2018 Solo Exhibit opportunity from VisArts!one BOWL at a time

While giving a seminar on pricing artwork last week, someone asked me who AAAD’s readers are.  “Foodie artists, I suppose” to which she replied, “I like to eat, does that count?”.  Of course it does.  I’ve had days, weeks & months that I have unintentionally boycotted cooking, recipes or any ingredient more complicated than cereal.  Seriously, folks, just eat.  Sometimes you can, sometimes you can’t –both art & food.  If your art is ready, this next Call is a great next step…

Check out this Call for Proposals from VisArts (Rockville, MD) for 2018 Solo Exhibits at the Gibbs Street Gallery.  There is a 2nd venue restricted to mid-Atlantic as well.  For those of you ready to take this step, this is a well-sized venue for a solo exhibit.  Take a look

Events have left me at home alone for lunch most days lately.  I’m not good at eating alone.  I’ll adjust eventually, but for now it is bananas & peanut butter or pasta with butter & parm.  I don’t do food solo easily, but art is a much easier solo option.  This next Call is a great outlet for solo work.  Plus, it comes with a little bit of budget.

Check out this Open Call from the Target Gallery at the Torpedo Factory (Alexandria, VA) for Solo Exhibition proposals.  The winner of this Call gets a small stipend to help produce the show.  Take a look…

I love anise in Indian food and my favorite Cajun rub but care little for licorice candy.  I’m not sure why.  Maybe it is that I appreciate the flavor in a salty context but not so much in sweets.  It is said that the Dutch love licorice flavor so much that the average citizen consumes more than 4 pounds of the candy a year.  Wow.  This next Call offers you the opportunity to consume all things Dutch for up to to 3 months.  Take a look…

I have a friend who hates cucumbers.  He once described them as “vile” in conversation.  Vile.  Everyone knows someone who dislikes Brussels sprouts or olives or grapefruit, but cucumbers?  They are so mild.  Is there a food that is universally loved? CALL for ENTRIES: Fight or Flight

Learn more about the Fight or Flight exhibit from The Painting Center!FOOD anyone?

I received more “why food?” inquiries this week.  Because.  That’s the short answer.  Specifically I had someone to challenge the relevancy of a food theme with all that is going on politically in the U.S.  Long Answer, well, food IS political, and global. (Reminder, the world is larger than the U.S.)  Regulations governing food safety couldn’t be more political. Quinoa and milk and coffee and avocados, political. Choosing the source of your food and having confidence the quality of your options is all about politics and privilege.  I love food.  AAAD will continue to celebrate food.  We all grow and buy and cook and serve in reaction to our experiences of the world around us.  We act and react, indulge and temper, daily.  This next Call wants your reaction to current events.  Take a look…

“Looking back to specific artists’ reactions to unsettled times, there are Picasso’s Guernica & Gerhard Richter’s cycle of paintings October 18, 1977. On the other hand, Matisse created his joyful collaged paper cutouts for his Jazz series during World War II in France, and Jackson Pollock’s poured paintings were created in the 1950s during the McCarthy era. Creativity can feed off the inspiration of current events and/or a personal vision. We are looking for artists’ responses to these times in which we live, in 2017.” –thepaintingcenter.org

Amass #6, cosmetic sponges coated with pastel pigment, by Margery Amdur

“I like to live in that very fluid space between painting, sculpture, & printmaking, and the idea of an obsessively ritualized process is still very prominent in the work.” Margery Amdur

Some people are all about intent and just work through the process.  I always have intent, but I do love process.  When I saw the work of today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, Margery Amdur, I immediately thought, “show the #wip pics”.  (They are some on Instagram, BTW.)  Celebrate the work, the making of the work, the result of the work.  Just celebrate.

Learn more about the Fairies in the Garden exhibit at Annmarie Sculpture Garden and Arts Center!food for FAIRIES

My grandmother loved fairy food.  She would boil sugar and vinegar together for what felt like forever (15 minutes) and then add baking soda at the last minute.  Magically, it seemed, the concoction would turn almost orange.  Once cooled, it had this beautifully buttery flavor.  Sugar + vinegar = fairy food.  Try it.  In the meantime, this next Call is all about the fairies.  Maybe a fairy kitchen?  This one is creative fun…

CALL for ENTRIES: Jonesborough Open

Learn more about the Jonesborough Open Juried Art Exhibit from the Mary B Martin Program for the Arts! more than CORN

Appalachian cuisine is a “new” thing in food circles.  But it isn’t. Everyone carries their own baggage about regional foods.  When I was little, if you referred to mountain food, fried chicken would be hailed as the prime example.  Then with the legalization of moonshine, everyone seems to think the local fare is all about corn whiskey and cornbread.  It is all more complicated than that, I promise.  What if food, in concert with art and culture are THE answer for Appalachian economic recovery?  This next Call offers an art opportunity in Appalachia.  This is a beautiful venue…

GREENS are the new black

The greens are emerging.  Many of you know that I live in Gatlinburg and wildfires recently swept the area.  Firefighters stopped the fire a mere 6′ from my doorstep.  The forest surround my home is charred.  But all of this unseasonably warm February weather (76°F today) has prompted the most tender of green leaves and unexpected happy daffodil heads to appear.  It is just another reminder that Spring is around the corner bringing with it the soft first lettuce leaves.  I can’t wait.  This next Call is in search of emerging artists; lettuce need not apply.  Take a look…
