Did you know that water lilies are edible? ME EITHER. I tripped across Edible Wild Plants of Pennsylvania and Neighboring States by Richard J. & Mary Lee Medve from Penn State Press (©1990). Don’t ask how I ended up in this rabbit hole; let’s just blame Instagram or Pinterest. Not only are water lilies edible, now I have recipes too. I can’t find any reference for their flavor, but I’m guessing floral and grassy like most edible flowers & greens. THEME: Summer Song. The exhibition is open to varied interpretations of the subject, from literal to far-ranging. Representational images of summer-related sights, activities, impressions, or atmosphere—as well as surrealistic or abstract evocations inspired by the subject—are welcome. Expressions may range from images of sun, sea, surf, and verdure to a more melancholy awareness of summer’s last gasp, a prelude to fall. Artists may also respond to the musical aspect of this call for entries. One could interpret the rhythm of the season, composing a visual image of summer’s harmonies.

MEDIA: All media considered except photography, digital & computer generated art.

Gaining recognition throughout the area, her work has been shown in multiple group exhibitions across NC & in Richmond, VA. Suggs has been awarded several grants & honors, including the NC Fellowship Award, a city of Richmond CultureWorks Grant, and a residency at the Quirk Hotel & Gallery in Richmond, VA. Her work is part of several corporate collections, and she is currently a curator at LIGHT Art + Design.

AWARDS: Cash awards totaling $2,000 will be presented at the exhibit’s Opening Reception –Best in Show ($1000), 2nd Place ($500), 3rd Place ($250), 2 Merit awards ($125 ea.) & an award from Fast Frame.

I have a soft spot for mothers in restaurants. I remember that struggle eat, feed the child that wasted all their good behavior in the waiting area, try to manage the mashed up mess and smile at the wait staff and hope they think you’ve got it all under control. I don’t know why so many mothers feel the need to sustain the illusion that being a mother is easy. We know better. We are better. It is hard. We are up to the task. This next Call wants all the facets of “mother” we can conjure. Up to the task?

After co-directing Woman Made Gallery from 1993 to 2000, Janet Bloch is now the Executive Director at Lubeznik Center for the Arts in Michigan City, Indiana.

JUROR: Danielle Krysa has a BFA in Visual Arts, and a post-grad in graphic design. She is the writer/curator behind the contemporary art site, The Jealous Curator (est.2009). Danielle has curated shows from Washington DC to Los Angeles, San Francisco to Toronto. In 2014 she published two books, titled “Creative Block” and “Collage”. Her third book, “Your Inner Critic Is A Big Jerk” was released in October 2016, and she is currently working a new book due out Fall 2018. Danielle has also had the great pleasure of speaking at TEDx, PIXAR, Creative Mornings, CreativeLive, and was interviewed for several video segments on oprah.com.

I don’t have an electric can opener. Any time someone cooks in my kitchen, they are puzzled by my lack of this appliance. (Insert obligatory I-don’t-buy-single-use-gadgets explanation here.) While on my way home from Virginia through North Carolina and on to Tennessee, I stopped in a number of “antique malls”, or junk stores as my mother would cal them, in search of frames for my own work. But I was struck by the number of meals ready-to-eat (MREs) for sale. I understand the attraction to un-expired MREs for survivalists & doomsday preppers, but why would anyone buy vintage beans? You can’t eat them. You can’t really open the package. Is it kitsch value? Someone please enlighten me. In the meantime, here is a Call celebrating Native American veterans. I am looking forward to seeing the winning design. You don’t have to be an architect or sculptor to apply.
