CALL for ENTRIES: Flowers, Plants & Gardens

Learn more about the Flowers, Plants and Gardens exhibit from Art-competition net!aztec TEA

We move to our “clean slate” apartment in about 6 weeks.  It has a good-size front porch but almost no yard.  The only green in site is a decayed and crumbling stepped flower bed next to the driveway.  I don’t think I can really grow a lot of food, but I have a friend that says she can get me a cut of epazote, a Mexican herb that’s hard to find in these parts.  Maybe if I surround it with marigolds and citronella, I might be able to save it from the bugs & their furrier 4-legged neighbors.  This next Call wants to know about your flowers, plants & gardens.  This is a perennial favorite, ha…

MORE please

I have a complicated relationship with food.  I eat what I want, when I want.  I have a complicated relationship with moderation too. Food is at the very least a political one, and clearly a feminist one.  Diet culture is pervasive. Patriarchy is rampant in the food industry. Then there’s fat shaming, BMI calculations and food deserts.  This next Call wants your feminist perspective — food references not necessary.  Take a look…

Anchovy paste is a standard item in my pantry, but it’s because I have a Caesar salad addiction.  Otherwise, I don’t know a single person that eats anchovies outside of my family.  Then, I was sitting in a pizza joint in Hendersonville, NC when I heard someone say, “I’m here for the anchovy, black olive pie.”  See, I am not alone –never alone.  There are benefits to being alone at times though.  This next Call is the perfect opportunity to go solo.  Don’t miss this chance…

“When lost, it feels like we are going in circles.
When there is great accomplishment, it feels as if
we have come full circle.”
Marissa J. Menefee

I find myself rehearsing half-hearted apologies for the decisions to step off the edge of the earth, or so it feels, in pursuit of adventure and truly living in the coming years.  I am taking baby steps toward a goal, but feel an immediate, obligatory sense of guilt creep up on me after every accomplishment.  Proud but guilty. Excited but apologetic. Emotional semantics.

Seeing the work of today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, Marissa J. Menefee, I thought, “this artist understands the circles in which I spin and spin and spin.”  Thanks, Marissa.

“No, I don’t want to be absolument moderne.”Mauro De Giorgi

I struggle with modern definitions of success & ambition.  My desires of and contributions to this world do not often equate a standard path in a world driven by capitalism.  This isn’t a political statement about capitalism.  It a personal statement of awareness of both my talents and my shortcomings.  And, I’m okay with that.  Today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, Mauro De Giorgi, finds his conflict with modern unwavering faith in technology.  That conflict has driven him deeply into connection through process.  I appreciate the lessons taught & learned.  Thank you, Mauro.

My papaya won’t ripen; it has been in my kitchen window for a week.  Ahhhh.  I try to eat mostly locally sourced/grown food; however, I am not going to commit myself to a lifetime of no bananas or papaya or mango because I live in the wrong grow zone.  As a result, some of the tropical fruits I buy are vastly under-ripe.  I usually just gross my fingers and hope for the best.  But when you know how fantastic something will the be, the anticipation can be a overwhelming.  This next Call is for a show I anticipate every year, both as a participant and a viewer.  Don’t miss this chance…

CALL for ENTRIES: Human Relationship to Water

Do you take water for granted?  Despite the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina and the ongoing reality of Flint, Michigan, and the horror of #NoDAPL protest conditions, among a hundred other examples, I am guilty of taking for granted that when I turn the handle, the water will be clean and abundant.  Until the wildfires.  It only took a week of boil conditions to make me realize how precious water is.  While we were under boil orders, I second guessed every utensil, every plate.  Did this get washed with boiled water?  Will this spoon make me sick?  Every meal. Every snack. Every day.  How would living without clean water affect your life?  I’m not the only one asking.  Take a look at this next Call questioning your relationship to water.  Take a look…

“. . .man’s relationship with water has become estranged. As ports closed and moved outside of the city, as planes and cars took over the role of the seas, and as the individual came to expect their cargo at their doorstep, so too did human interconnectivity lose its relationship to water and the natural elements.” –from Adriaan Van Der Plas via laphotocurator.com

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists

MEDIA: Photography

DEADLINE: April 5, 2017 (Midnight PST)

NOTIFICATION: (and opening date) April 25, 2017

ENTRY FEE: $20 for up to 3. 15% of artist fees go to 2 charities per competition. 7.5% to the curator’s choice of charity and 7.5% to the first place winner’s chosen charity.  Adriaan Van Der Plas has chosen the charity Clean Water Action.

CURATOR: Founder Adriaan Van Der Plas was once himself an outsider, having left his hometown of Vienna, Austria in 1973 to immigrate to New York City. Around this time, artist Konstantin Bokov was preparing to make the same transition. Inspired by the works of Van Gogh and unable to show his art in the political climate of the USSR, he decided to leave the Ukraine for New York city. The two became acquainted in 1993, when Bokov approached Adriaan at his former art pushcart concept in the South Street Seaport district, “Art a la carte”.

Adriaan became an avid collector of his work, recognizing the sincerity by which the work was able to portray New York’s spirit and materiality. With the opening of the Van Der Plas gallery on 156 Orchard Street, Adriaan made it the gallerys mission to bring contemporary outsiders  into the public eye.

SALES: All sales are conducted between the artist & buyer.  There is no commission.

Some days it is easier to see the bad and harder to see the good.  That doesn’t mean that the bad is more prevalent, it just means you may not be well equipped to see it that day.  Today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, Grace Summanen, uses the most common of found objects and supplies to create her own magic.  The result is hypnotic.
