My family is on a savings spree.  We sat down the first week of the year and decided on goals for the year.  Many of those goals require cash.  Cash necessitates saving.  Saving, in my house, means cutting the food budget.  Grocery shopping is now preceeded by a menu and detailed grocery list and eating out has been cut to one sit-down meal and one fast-food meal a week.  This next Call gives you an opportunity to plan ahead.

This Call for Entries is for the 13 Sugarloaf Fine Art & Crafts festivals.  I don’t publish many festival calls, but Sugarloaf is among the country’s finest.  Take a look, and find a festival for you…or enter them all.

FIGHTING FOODS

I dislike having food thrown at me.  But inevitably every time I go to a Japanese hibachi restaurant, I am the unwilling target of the Chef’s attempt to pop a shrimp into a customer’s mouth.  I wonder if the Chefs are like horses… they sense fear.  Here’s hoping the result of this Call is a great opportunity to eat authentic Japanese food while not feeling like you’re being used for target practice.

Check out this Call for Entries for a 3-Month Artist Residency from the Japan-U.S. Friendship Commission.  You could win living expenses for you and your family, transporation cost and professional development funds.  Don’t miss this opportunity.

SUSHI ME!

When you think of North Carolina, what food comes to mind?  I instantly think vinegar-based barbeque; however, this blog has been awash with pit-smoked references lately.  So, I turned to my friend Michelle, a fellow blogger and Foreign Service officer for a little help.  She is getting her doctorate from UNC.  She says the best sushi place ever is a little place called Akai Hana and just happens to be outside of Chapel Hill in Carrboro, NC.  This next Call might end in a great sushi dinner if you play your cards right.

Check out this Call for Entries for the 2011-2012 Juried Exhibitions Series in Chapel Hill.  There is no entry fee and only a 15% commission.  Take a look!

FEATURED ARTIST: Julia Feld

TOAST of the town

I love the hand-technique and the personal aspect of work in which you can see the artist’s hand.  I don’t need or want perfection.  I want to be amazed by talent and patience and thought and creativity. This month’s artist challenges me. AAAD is happy to feature the work of book carver Julia Feld. Feld’s work reminds all of the wonder found in books…words AND illustrations.  So many people dismiss the work of illustrators.  I find Feld’s work is entirely her own while at the same time, it celebrates the work of illustrators, past and present.

Games for Two circa 1937 carved by Julia Feld!

FEATURED ARTIST: Julia Feld

Julia Feld is a scientist and artist living and working in St. Louis.  All pieces featured on her Holey Stokes! blog are her intricate creations and must be seen to be believed.
(‘Hokey Stokes!’ is a phrase used to express wonderment or surprise in situations when ‘Holy Buckets!’ is deemed too explicit or crude. — Book Carver Julia Feld)

Feld has no formal art instruction and accidentally ended up as a book carver.

Webster's 7th Collegiate Dictionary circa 1971 carved by Julia FeldA few years back, she found a set of Funk and Wagnalls Encyclopedias in the free box outside a used book shop.  “I didn’t know what I’d do with them but thought it was a pity that such a lovely set of books could end up in a dirty cardboard box in a parking lot, so I brought them home.”

“I really don’t remember what was going through my head the first time I thought to go at one with an exacto knife.  I do what I do because I like reminding people that books are things of beauty and that pictures and diagrams aren’t just about the information they convey.”

There is a cult-like following of Julia Feld’s work online, and a popular myth that I see over and over is that she laser cuts her shapes and images.  False.  She hand cuts every shape.

“For some books, I carve through a page at a time, removing all the text and empty space and leaving only pictures and outlines.  For others, I gut the entire contents and rebuild it from scratch.  They all involve a ton of exact-o blades, tweezers, glue, and framing glass.  I’ve tried using power tools, but haven’t been pleased with the outcomes.”

All about House Plants carved by Julia Feld“If anyone from the future has prototype laser cutter they’d like to donate, I’d certainly be game to try it out.” — Julia Feld

I enjoy asking artists about their terminology for their process and media.  I find that it often gives me insight as to the frequent disconnect of an artist from the public perception of his or her work.

Altered books have a long-documented history in traditional art settings as mixed media, but I find that media are becoming more and more specific over time.  Feld considers her work book carvings, but when I asked her for the school of art into which her work fit, she defers the questions to you, my loyal readers:  “I am overwhelmed by the amount of research I’d have to do to answer this question properly.  I like carving books because it draws attention to the aesthetic quality of objects that are usually valued primarily for their informational content.  Gentle readers, using the comment section below, please share with me what school of art do you think this falls into!”

Selected tables in Mathematical Statistics carved into a Butterfly specimen book by Julia FeldSo, back to the armchair psychology of it all… Feld’s Favorite Food?  Toast.  No really… toast.  I would NEVER think of asking an artist if they have a back-up plan just in case art doesn’t work out.  I’m not your momma; you don’t need something to fall back on with me.
Nonetheless, Feld is prepared. “I want to open and operate a dining establishment called Julia’s Toasteraunt (maybe Julia’s Toastorium) where every table has a really nice toaster on it and you order big spreads of different kinds of breads and jams and cheeses and everyone feasts on toast.  If someone wants to open a soup joint next store, I’d be open to that.” Editor’s Note:  I will offer this blog and the transcripts of my interview with Julia Feld as evidence if you steal her idea, people.

Thank you Julia for sharing your work with us.

I felt a little like I was looking through the keyhole into a mad scientist’s laboratory (in the nutty, harmless 1950s definition of “mad”) during the discovery of Julia’s work.  Loved the adventure.

2010 ARTIST of the YEAR: Catherine Roach

Click to Subscribe to www.ArtAndArtDeadlines.com by Email!HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Today marks a New Year for ArtAndArtDeadlines.com! I think it fits nicely between the traditionally recognized New Year Celebration (December 31st), and I love Chinese New Year (February 3rd this year)!  Of course, I always appreciate an excuse to eat Chinese food.

This is the day we name the
Artist of the Year for 2010.

When this blog began in September of 2009, I was determined to cover not only art deadlines but also really good art.  And, I chose a few artists here and there.  I quickly realized that the Featured Artist program needed structure, or it would never really get done on any sort of regular basis.  The $2 Art Contest was born.

Am in the Sea by Catherine RoachBy the end of the year, I began to realize that the Featured Artist Page was getting crowded and adding more artists would lessen the impact of being Featured.  I knew I had to start archiving artists by the year.  And the idea of the Artist of the Year was born.  I gave all of the Featured Artists notice that on January 15th at midnight EST, the Artist of the Year would be determined by the number of comments on their individual Featured Artist blog posts.

Right out of the gate, three artists’ fans came out strong: James Melcher, Amy Kollar Anderson and Catherine Roach.  And after a month of voting, the final count was very close… only 12 votes separated Anderson and Roach.

Catherine RoachCongratulations to
Catherine Roach
AAAD’s 2010 Artist of the Year

I have enjoyed watching her expand her horizons this year.  It feels to me like she grew along with AAAD.  Catherine graduated from New England Institue of Art, moved, started a music blog and began her job as a Graphic Designer at Grouper Design and has continued to produce amazing work.

DON’T MAKE ME
BEET YOU!

I love root vegetables.  Carrots and turnips are yummy, but I simply have never developed a taste for beets.  I don’t hate beets.  I just don’t eat them.  But I must admit I’ve been tempted.  My mother grew up in the hills of Tennessee, and when she was little, her mother used to boil beets in a kettle over an open fire outside in the yard.

The little devils that they were, my mother and her siblings used to grab them by the greens out of the pot and squeeeeeeeze.  Apparently they shoot out like little red rockets out of their skins.  Beet rockets, funny.  Get to the source of your imagination with this Call.

FISHY FACE

I have more than one friend that won’t eat food with a face… which should make her a vegetarian on moral grounds, right?  Well, while out to lunch with one of them many years ago, my friend ordered fish.  I promptly reminded her that she didn’t eat food with faces and that fish definitely have faces.  She looked at me as seriously as possible and said, “I’ve looked into a fish’s eyes.  They have no story to tell.  There’s nothing going on up there.  Bring on the tuna.”  This next Call will require that your face tell a story.

Check out this Call for Entries from the Annmarie Sculpture Garden (an affiliate of the Smithsonian Institute) for About Face.  The entry fee is only $20 for up to four pieces, and this is an excellent opportunity to put your best face forward.  Take a look!

Download the About Face Prospectus!CALL for ENTRIES:  About Face

About Face explores the artist as storyteller. How does an artist develop and arrange the elements of a good story—character, setting, plot, conflict, climax, and resolution—through the format of a portrait?  Though we all have a story to tell, what is gained or lost when we are rendered through an artist’s point of view?  Do the completed works represent the person we are, the person we strive to be, or the character the artist sees?  How do traditional and new media types affect the impact of a portrait?  To this end, the jury seeks portraits that tell a compelling story in a visually interesting way.

About Face will be installed in the spacious Mezzanine Gallery of Annmarie Sculpture Garden’s Arts Building.  With over 3300 sq ft of exhibition space, moveable walls, high ceilings, tile floors, an Arakawa hanging system, Internet access, and electricity, the Mezzanine Gallery can accommodate all sizes and types of installations.  A few outdoor works will also be considered for inclusion in About Face.

Learn more about the Annmarie Arts Center!ELIGIBILITY:  All media types are welcome.  The exhibition is open to all artists age 18 and older working in the U.S.  Video entries must be submitted on DVD, playable on QuickTime or RealPlayer, and no more than 30 minutes in length.
DVD or computer based works must be exhibited on equipment provided by artist. Internet access is available.  Bases and pedestals must well-balanced and sturdy. Annmarie has a limited number of bases available, please inquire.  All frames must be black or silver and simple in design.  All works that will be hung on the wall must have brackets that work with the Arakawa hanging system. More information on this system will be provided upon acceptance.

DEADLINE:  March 1, 2011 is the deadline for your application.

Download the About Face Prospectus!NOTIFICATION:  Artists will be notified of final acceptance status via email by March 7, 2011.

ENTRY FEE:  Artists must submit a $20 non-refundable entry fee for up to four entries. Entry fee must be paid by check, money order, or credit card. Each entry must be submitted with three images of the artwork, including one overall view of the artwork, one detail shot, and one installation shot.

ABOUT the ANNMARIE SCULPTURE GARDEN:  An affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution, Annmarie is a thirty-acre public sculpture garden and arts center located in scenic Solomons, Maryland, on the Chesapeake Bay. The sculpture garden features a walking path which meanders through the forest, past permanent and loaned sculpture, including more than thirty works on loan from the Smithsonian Institution and the National Gallery of Art. The garden also presents a variety of special events, gallery shows, and engaging public art programs. The new Studio School offers creative classes taught by a talented faculty. The award-winning Arts Building, which opened in May ‘08, is a 15,000 sq.ft. museum-grade exhibition space that includes two large galleries, a gift shop, café, and a sunny patio that offers lovely views of the outdoor sculpture.

I am not a good house keeper.  We must own our faults, and this fact is one of my many faults.  I don’t qualify for Hoarding or Clean House, but I also don’t dust unless my kid sneezes.  There are always 4 loads of laundry that need to be done, and I am fairly certain there is a can of coconut milk in my cabinet that expired in 2006.

Life is too short.

However, I cannot afford to be a bad blog house keeper.  All of you deserve better than dusty pages and rotten Calls.  There are too many of you whose trust I have earned over the past year and a half to let things fall through the cracks.

So, I am counting on you to resist the urge to move on to checking other email or goofing off on facebook and help me out folks.  We really need to work on cleaning up a few things that are left lingering about even after the New Year:

Photography by Juror Peter Turnley!CALL FOR ENTRIES:
A True Story

Photography is the medium of memory. With its birth came the pictorial press and the realization that “a picture tells a thousand words.”  This is documentary photography.  It is present and tangible, and we rely on it to be authentic and true.  It teaches us, and when presented in proper context, we believe what we see.

It is the job of the Photojournalist and Documentary Photographer to present the facts at hand.  It is a challenging job often requiring instant decisions and sometimes in the face of substantial obstacles.  How do we do this succinctly and objectively while providing an engaging and remarkable image or series?

Is it possible to capture a photographic truth while simultaneously expressing our naturally subjective eye?

Juror Peter Turnley has proven the task can be successful – have you?

Learn more about the Vermont Photo Space Gallery! For A True Story, VPS is looking for the documented event, person, or place, whether political, religious, cultural or environmental. Reality itself is infinitely more complex that what a single image can show, so we encourage your Photo Essay submissions of up to six images (some single images tell the whole thing adequately – these will be considered equally).  As the Photo Essay is so often complimented or even interdependent with text, they will allow up to three sentences to accompany each accepted image for display in the gallery.

Of special note:  VPS is able to accept essays for this exhibition!  So much of the genre appears as photo story, and they are thrilled to offer the opportunity to exhibitors to submit the same.  Whether you are submitting single images or multiples as a story, Juror Peter Turnley will consider your work as it is intended.  Who knows, this exhibition may include a few very lucky photographers who present an outstanding documentary photo story in several images.

America in Black and White by Juror Peter Turnley!JUROR:  Peter Turnley was educated in French Literature and International Relations, inspiring his truly International work. For the past quarter century, he has been photographing in more than eighty-five countries, capturing world conflict, and several major geo-political moments.

His portraits of political, cultural, and religious leaders as well as photo essays of a variety of social realities additionally weight his extensive, ever-expanding portfolio.   He has published five books:  “Beijing Spring,” “Moments of Revolution,” “In Times of War and Peace,” “Parisians” and “McClellan Street”. His images have been published in International magazines including Stern, Paris Match, Geo, Life, National Geographic, the London Sunday Times, Le Monde, and Doubletake.

Additionally, Turnley’s photographs have been showcased on the cover of Newsweek magazine over forty timesVPS is thrilled to have his extensive experience as a successful Photojournalist and Documentary Photographer applied to his mission as Juror for “A True Story.”
