DRIVE-THRU
YOU

Food access easily drives what you actually consume.  There isn’t a real restaurant within 10 miles of my home.  As a result, we cook almost everyday.  There is only one grocery store within 10 miles of my home; therefore, there is no late night run to the store for chips or ice cream or chocolate.  We have to plan our bad behavior in advance.  This post will help you plan your artistic behavior and give you phenomenal access to a great artist resource.

Check out this Opportunity to join Model Mayhem!  There is no fee to join, and some models with work for prints.  The database is searchable by state and city, and if there are available models near me… there are models near you!  Take a look…

Check out Model Mayhem!MODEL MAYHEM

My esteemed collegue, Arizona-based artist and photographer Jerry Portelli, has been shoving me out of my comfort zone for a couple of years now.   And, he introduced me to Model Mayhem–an online resource, primarily for models, that offers photographers and artists a way to connect to models near them.  For the models, it is an online “go see.”  For you, as an artist, you get to pour over their profile and previous work to find just what inspires you.

DEADLINE:  Quit procrastinating

NOTIFICATION:  The sooner you join, the sooner you’ll find your muse.

ENTRY FEE:  I have had several models agree to TFP or Trade for Prints in lieu of cash. They build their portfolio, and I have money to eat and still produce artwork.  Model Mayhem is free to join, but you must be approved.

Find a model at Model Mayhem!ELIGIBILITY:  The approval process isn’t automated. You must fit into a member category and the requirements for that category.

Here are a few highlights from their site:

Bio Requirements You are asked to provide a short bio as part of your application. Please provide details about your experience, goals, reasons for being on MM, or any other relevant information. The SHIRT OFF my BACK

I spent just enough time in culinary school to discover that I did not want to be a chef. The hours on my feet were going to be too late, and my chances of being a world-renowned chef that only worked days were even more remote.  I opted for the t-shirt instead. Funny enough, my experience as a gallery owner was not altogether different– lots of work and lots of late night hours.  My hats are off to both Chefs and Gallery Owners.  This Call is from a brand-spanking new gallery in Connecticut.  This could be your chance to be a part of wonderful little gem of a gallery from the very beginning.  Take a chance…

BE BULGAR!

I love that more exotic foods are available in virtually any grocery store.  I live in a pretty small town, but because we have a large tourist population, the grocery store selections are a little better.  With Spring just around the corner, tabbouleh salad is calling my name.  Ten years ago, I would had to have gone in search of an ethnic or gourmet market and paid $10 for a bad boxed mix.  Now it is as simple as taking a trip to my local Food City.  Once again, my food world has intersected with my art world… this Call for Entries is a great example of new ideas in art accessibility.  No invitation to this opening is necessary.  Take a look…

Check out this Call for Entries for the 2011 Spring Exhibition at The Byte Gallery–an interactive kiosk at Transylvania University in Kentucky.  This show is free to enter, and I love the accessibility feature.

FREE, but ODD

The strangest thing I’ve ever eaten is Fugu, also known as Japanese pufferfish.  What was strange was that I ate it in the USVI at the hands of a Japanese Chef who sold me on eating it BECAUSE #1 it was FREE and #2 it could kill me if prepared improperly.  No meal is worth dying for, folks; ahhh, the stupidity of being eighteen.  Well, clearly, I didn’t die, and unfortunately, I don’t really remember the taste due to my adrenaline-fueled expectation that I could, at any moment, drop dead.  In hindsight, I don’t REALLY know what I ate. Hmmm.  This next call for art may be the strangest of its sort I’ve ever seen as well–at least for an Art Exhibit.  Take a look…

UMMYYUMMY

I am not a fan of baby talk.  I don’t like it when adults talk to children in that voice and I certain don’t like to hear grown women use that tone.  However, as an adult, I seem to have developed a Suess-ian fondness for making up words where there is no need outside of making them rhyme.  I have not excuse.  None.  And, I’m thinking that my unnecessarily made up, substitute name for fried chicken, “chicky wicky” (yes, I wish I were kidding) will not make it into the dictionary as some verbal creation inevitably do–like the name of this show.

I must confess that I do less cooking that my daily ramblings might indicate.  My dearest husband does much of the cooking in our household, and he does it wonderfully.  But the times I truly enjoy are the times we spend in the kitchen together.  And, as I get older, I have found that artistic collaboration keeps me motivated as well.  This call offers you an opportunity to produce work while still being someone else’s muse.  Great idea…

WILL DESIGN
for FOOD

I am a sucker for food ads.  I am fascinated by the look and description of food.  If you want to sell me something… do it with good design.  Like this ad for FIT Ketchup from Heinz.  If you love ads, check out Ads of the World™ where I found this one.  It is the same with art.  As I have mentioned in the Art of Cooking, it is all about presentation.

I am a huge fan of pursuing editorial art publication; however, anything worth having in life is also worth doing yourself

Whether it is promoting a show you already have or introducing your work to galleries where you would like to show, postcards are a great idea for promoting your work.  Printing them yourself doesn’t often look professional, and professional printing is more reasonably priced than ever.

Learn more about your postcard options at NextDayFlyerscom!AAAD  is proud to partner with NextDayFlyers.com to sponsor a postcard giveaway.

All you to do is leave a comment on this post telling us what you would do with 100 free postcards, and you qualify to win!  I know a few of you out there are suspicious, but there is no catch!

Comments will close one week from the time of this post. NextDayFlyers.com will use Random.org to pick a winner and set up an account with a credit for a set of 100 4″x6″ Standard Postcards printed in full color on one side and black and white on the reverse. They will include next day printing turnaround time and ship them anywhere in the Continental U.S.

Pyschomachia by Artist R.L. Gibson and Photographer Jerry Portelli!Those are their rules;
Here are mine:

1. One comment per artist explaining what you will do with the postcards.

2. Comments should not contain profanity or links to other websites.  Editor’s note: I personally approve every comment, so I will know if you break the rules.

3. Spread the word.  The drawing is completely random, so help out your friends and peers by giving them a chance to win too.  Retweet & share on facebook!

Best of luck!  We will post the name of the winner!

I almost moved to Paducah, Kentucky.  When I was deciding where to move, I tripped across their Artist Relocation Program.  I visited Paducah and FELL IN LOVE with a huge pickle/tamale factory from the early 1900s.  Fate interceded, and I ended up in Gatlinburg.  But, I find myself drawn to factories over and over again.  This Call for Applications details another great use for an old factory.
