I’m on week 3 of no dishwasher.  It isn’t that bad.  I was dreading it before the move, but I knew downsizing was important enough to get over the inconvenience.  The only real difference I have noticed is the increased use of parchment paper, ha.  I don’t mind washing dishes, but cleaning baking pans is to be avoided when at all possible.  This next Call doesn’t require your work be on or in paper, but one artist will get a bonus prize of beautiful papers from the Awagami Factory.  Take a look…

JUROR:  Brock Brake is a co-owner & curator of Athen B. Gallery, the curator & director of First Amendment Gallery in San Francisco / Oakland, and is the latest addition to the curatorial board at Pro Arts in Oakland. His passion for photographing graffiti gained him publication in outlets such as Brooklyn Street Art Blog, Graffiti Art Magazine & Juxtapoz.  Once in Oakland Brock worked as an intern at Hamburger Eyes and as an art handler at White Walls & Shooting Gallery in San Francisco.  As a supporter & facilitator of the Bay Area Art community, Brock continues his “extended” art education by working as an art handler at various galleries and museums both locally and out of state. 

AWARDS:  Artists selected by the guest juror will receive a 2-page spread including a brief bio, website, and 2 images in print and digital formats. Published artists will receive a complimentary digital issue and will be listed on Create! Magazine’s website/social media.  One artist selected by the guest curator for the September issue will also receive $250 worth of Japanese papers from Awagami Factory, Japan.

JUROR: A native Kansan, Johne Richardson has received many regional & national awards for his paintings. Having worked in watercolor exclusively for 35 years, it remains his favorite medium, but in recent years he has painted in acrylic & oil. Johne finds his inspiration in anything that is flattered by the light. Johne received his BFA from the University of Kansas, worked as a Hallmark artist for 27 years, and is a painter, illustrator, teacher & writer. He lives in Overland Park, KS.

I am moving my home and downsizing again.  This is the last step on the way to making my family more mobile.   I have temporarily returned to goal-specific formal secondary education, and have just met the end of residential parenting.  My world is shifting.  I look around me for comfort in the familiar, in signs and symbols that the sun will appear once again in the morning.  And, while the sun has yet to disappoint me, it is hard not to feel isolated when you interpret all the signs differently than those around you.  I feel as a stranger in a strange land, like the title of that famous sci-fi novel.  When I read the statement of today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, Susan Grace, I new I’d found a kindred spirit.  Read the statement, browse the work.  Maybe we aren’t strangers after all.

Four weeks left until my home, studio & storage space are cut in half.  I am trying to make the hard decisions about need versus want, necessary versus nourishing.  There is a time & place for everything, but finding those times and places is an art form all its own.  I fell in love with the work of today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, Heather Robinson, whose “Attraction” series explores some of these very themes.  I find it a comfort to know that others, both known & unknown to me, experience my thoughts & feelings & challenges as there own.  We are not alone.

Her recent projects include exhibitions on the whaling scenes of Joseph Mallord, William Turner and on The Met’s collection of Pre ‐ Raphaelite art and design. She publishes and lectures on topics ranging from Impressionist painting to Symbolist drawing, and was previously a juror for the National Arts Club’s Artist Members Exhibition.

AWARDS: Best of Show Gold $1000, Most Innovative Use of Materials $500, People’s Choice $250, Curator’s Choice $250 & ten $100 Certificates of Recognition.

She was the photo editor for Al Gore on his book Our Choice, the sequel to Inconvenient Truth.
