I plead guilty to taking my eating utensils and dishes for granted. Because of my love for the art of plating food, I’ve always owned solid white functional dishware. My mother is a “collector” of flatware and hasn’t allowed me to pick my own, EVER. It is bestowed upon me on occasion without request or explanation. We all have our burdens, ha.

Now I am married to a commercial production potter (120+ pots a day & NOT pictured here), and suddenly the world of dishware is my oyster. Did you know you need differently sized and shaped bowls for salad, cereal & pasta? As I said, we all have our burdens, ha. I love eating out of the bowls my husband has thrown. Every once in a while he comes home with a “one off” just for me because he thought it looked like it was “meant for me”. *swoon* I’ve been trying to convince him to enter this show because I love this venue. It isn’t restricted to a literal interpretation, so be sure to investigate this opportunity.

How do you fuel your early afternoons? I know some of you find it freaky that I’ve not consumed coffee in 20+ years, but I’ve just never acquired the taste. Whether you choose sugar-full or sugar-substituted, soft drinks are a horrible alternative. So, I am taking suggestions. Smoothies are fantastic, and I can make pretty healthy choices that offer a little energy boost. However, to maintain any sort of variety, I’d need a much larger amount storage space. Has anyone tried the the soup & smoothie subscription service? (not a paid post or affiliate link). It might be an interesting way to get variety. Sometimes you just need a little help.

This next Call is MORE than just a little help. Many of you will live outside the qualifiers (living either within 150 miles of D.C. This is an open call for proposals for solo exhibitions for Hillyer’s 2020/2021 season.

ELIGIBILITY: Hillyer focuses on under represented artists. We accept proposals from regional artists that live within 150 miles of Washington, DC and have not had a solo exhibition in the last three years in a professional gallery or art space OR work from international (non-American) artists that are both living & working internationally.

MEDIA: Open to all media

DEADLINE: September 10, 2019 (by 4pm)

ENTRY FEE: $30

AWARD: A month long exhibition in one Hillyer’s three gallery rooms, Artist honorarium, Inclusion in annual RISE exhibition, previewing selected artists for 2020/21 season; Ongoing support from Hillyer staff, including a studio visit and exhibition consultation with Hillyer’s Director, assistance with exhibition installation and de-installation, review of exhibition materials (artist statement, bio, labels, etc), and marketing and promotion of exhibition. It is almost apple season ’round these parts, and I cannot wait. I grew up thinking Red Delicious apples were “apples”, and I wasn’t a fan. Not until I became a teenager did I understand there were many other varieties. Not until I moved to Tennessee did I realize how many varieties there really were. Now, I live within a few miles of an orchard with more varieties than I imagine I’ll never get around to trying. I appreciate being able to know about my food, about how it is grown and harvested and sold, and how those funds support the lives of my neighbors.

That connection to my food is what made me connect to this exhibit about agricultural awareness. I know that many of you are hoping to add a museum show to your resume, and this is a great opportunity to do just that. Your work doesn’t have to be literal or necessarily botanical to fit this curatorial them. Show them what you’ve got.

Sweet potato pie is a family favorite. As we head into fall and the the pumpkin-spice vs no-pumpin-spice debate rages on endlessly, I’m over hear making sweet potato pies from fall all the way into winter. Sweet potatoes are available year ’round, take much less time to cook from scratch than sugar pumpkins and require far less added sugar. I know you think you don’t like them, but try them. Fall in love with them and you can be eating their beautiful orange goodness, from scratch instead of can, for the entire winter.

This next Call is centered around the mood and ambiance of winter and the work that it inspires. Winter tends to be productive for me, but it often produces darker work, literally and metaphorically. Are you affected by the change in the season? This show’s call deadline is in September, so you’ll either need to pull work from last winter or predict the oncoming season. Testimonials and recommendations are great, but my taste buds choose for themselves. As a welcomed side-result of writing these posts, I receive a significant amount of unsolicitied recommendations for brands of food that are meant to change my mind about tofu, kale & collard greens. And, I diligently try most to of the suggests, just in case. On occasion I muse to myself, “that wasn’t half bad”, (never about tofu though), but the important thing for me is to not get stuck in a rut or trust a single encounter as the definitive one. Did you know that I avoided asparagus for 20 years because of my experiences with the canned variety as a child. I missed 20 years of green tree goodness. Never again. Yesterday, I offered a Call that chose random winners for supplies in a specific media, but today I offer a Call with a juried winner of cash open to wide array of media. CALL for ENTRIES: Meltdown

It is no secret that I’m a little, well, let’s call it cheese “focused”. But we all have our priorities. After being seperated by an ocean for 4 weeks, my husband and I stopped by a local dairy farm less than 24 hours after reunited… to buy cheese. Priorities. Cheese glorious cheese. A few days later, I made summer squash au gratin also known as “squash makes all the melted cheese a legitimate choice”, au gratin for short. Melted cheese means I’m home, ha. Think of it as my oven’s welcome mat. It is the best kind of meltdown.

I have been known to indulge in an epic meltdown of a personal nature on occasion. The last U.S. presidential election put me in an ugly place for weeks. Every insuing attack on civil rights, environmental regulations, access to health insurance & the ability to govern the workings of my own body have warranted their own meltdowns. My work has changed. My life has changed. I worry about becoming numb to the suffering of others, to the loss of agency, to the restrictions on the ability to speak freely. Where is this planet’s population headed? While I was in Scotland recently, I was regularly engaged by locals about American politics. People want to understand what is going on in the United States. I couldn’t explain. I can’t explain. So, I just keep working. Right now, THAT is what I can do.

I cheated on my husband with shrimp tacos. He’s contact allergic to shellfish, and on the rare occasion I eat a meal without him, my radar is firmly set on shrimp. I feel guilty while eating them, like I’ve cheated, and then have to go through a hazmat-style sterilization process afterward. But, shrimp.

I had that shrimp-y luncheon with my a friend, an accomplished realist painter. We spent time talking about our plans for the next weeks and months. She paints prolifically and noted, “I haven’t even been looking at Calls because I can’t do anything until Fall”. Between work for galleries that represent her, a couple of invitational shows and a museum solo show that comes down this week, she can’t lose focus. Realizing that kind of focus has been my goal for months, and I am beginning to see results, but it requires tuning out the things that don’t serve my focused goal.

CRAVING connections

We had three days of Spring-like weather, but Monday was 15° colder than Sunday. Tuesday is predicted to be 21° colder than Monday was. So that means SOUP, predictable, I know. While prepping lunch today I was day dreaming about making my favorite Tom Ka Gai when my eyes scanned a row of go-to cookbooks I keep above my stove. What did I find? The Soupmaker’s Kitchen (not an affiliate link, BTW) by Aliza Green. I don’t know how it ended up in my house, much less on the shelf with my favorites. No one in my house remembers buying it or ever seeing it. Bizarre, no? It contains great advice on stock-making and other best kitchen practices along with some fantastic recipes, and Steve Legato’s photography makes everything look luscious. I cannot wait to make the Hungarian Woodlands Mushroom soup & the Senegalese Peanut and Yam Puree with Ginger. Yum.

While eating lunch, I happened to read this next Call from Annmarie Arts Center. I’ve written about them many times over the years because I am SUCH a fan of this venue. I applied today. This is a “living studio” experience. They split the gallery into 12’x12′ studio spaces for artists for 5 to 14 days, and you work in an open environment with other artists & gallery visitors. They encourage sales, and the commission rate is super low. This is a sort of make your own residency for out of town folks, and more like an production art show for locals. There is some housing available for out-of-towners. I want to use the two weeks to test out some new content and techniques before I head off to Scotland for a month. I hope I make the cut. If you have time & the interest, we may get an opportunity to hang out for a couple of weeks & work together. So exciting. Fingers crossed –for you AND for me.

CALL for ENTRIES: Portraits 2018

I’ve often spoken of my emotional eating & closeted love for junk food. I occasionally comfort myself with the notion of artisinal junk food like lovingly, hand-made beautiful doughnuts. But, truth be known, I have an ugly Totino’s habit. I admitted here in writing once about 5 years ago, but as I push spinach salads and chia seed smoothies like a health food pimp, I like to believe that no one holds me accountable for my addiction to frozen pizza. (You can find the complete ingredient list here, OMG, assuming I can convince you I only eat the cheese variety. *lying*) I have faith in my better instincts, but I admittedly have worse ones too.

A lot of people have gut instincts about shows. Some artists are completely turned off by the concept of online shows. Some artists only want to show where they can hand-deliver work. I try to evaluate opportunities based on how they fulfill MY current needs. I don’t need resume fluff right now, so I am submitting to fewer shows and just trying to get the work DONE. I get asked about online galleries all the time, and whether or not they are scams. The easy answer is “sometimes”. You & I both need to submit work to shows that WORK for us. So what are the pros to online shows? I like them as a great way to test new, experimental work. they help me see how I stack up against other work in a more objective atmosphere than the bubble of my already engaged fan and peer base. Online shows can drive traffic to your website and give you organic social media posts. Online exhibits can force you to create themed work that gets you out of rut or unstuck. Depending upon the venue, they can help you reach a different audience. And, there’s the prize money. Is this opportunity right for you? Only you can know. I have faith in your better instincts.
