I’ve had many a conversation about why some foods, eggs & bread & oysters for example, come in dozens. I’ve heard that it is easier to divide because it has more factors (1, 2, 3, 4 & 6). I’ve heard that a bakers dozen (13) exists merely so delivery men don’t eat part of the order making the baker look like a cheat. I’ve heard it originated in the fact that there were 12 pennies in a shilling which made sales without change making easier. None of these are verifiable though. Did you know there is even a Dozenal Society that advocates for 12 as our base number instead of 10? While you contemplate the math of it all, this next Call will only choose a half dozen artists to participate in this show. Are you one of six?

What makes comfort food a comforting food? I have a friend whose local tradition is bring food to a grieving family. Upon the death of her cousin, she noted that a half-dozen dishes of macaroni and cheese, two layered dips and three lasagnas, none of them comforting to all. For me it is fried green tomatoes, and occasionally goat cheese. After a little research it seems that it isn’t the cheese or butter or starch that makes comfort food, it is familial connection, the security of childhood (if you had any). I am fairly certain my father never tasted goat cheese in his life, but my grandmother made the best fried green tomatoes ever. So, maybe. I don’t know. What do you think? This next Call is all about Grief (not necessarily the accompanying food). Investigate…

Sometimes I find myself in an awkward moment standing with a stranger on a grocery aisle while we both debate the merits of one brand of product against another –anchovy paste, pickled watermelon rind or powdered peanut butter, for example. Do two people both interested in watermelon rind automatically have something in common aside from a taste in food? I often wonder as I stand there silently next to them, whether our lives have other odd points of intersection. Are we birds of a feather? This next Call is all about the birds. Take a look…

I am particularly anxious for Spring to arrive this year. We’re getting closer to when my yearly batch of fiddleheads arrive from the northeast. I have a friend that sends these asparagus-reminiscent beauties to me once a year. And as much as I love them, my anticipation of Spring is about more this year. The symbolism of future promise and new beginnings will weigh on my palate with every fork of fiddlehead this year. This next Call is also inspired by nature. Investigate this opportunity…

I am finally in the groove of cooking for two. Since my kid left for college, there have been A LOT of leftovers crowding my freezer, but it is getting better. When he comes home for a weekend, it often takes me a week to recover my cooking-for-two-ness, but it is better than it used to be. Just remember: 1 zucchini per person, 1 potato per meal, buy broccoli crowns, not bunches; it’s a groove thing. This next Call wants you to get in the groove too. Take a look…

Green onions are among the first shoots sent up in Spring. They taste like the more refined cousin of wild onions whose smell I associate with fresh-cut grass. The greens are only fresh for a few days, but the bulbs protect themselves by turning outer layers into a husk-like spring jacket. The green, slightly bitter bite they offer quiche is high on my list of favorite flavors. This next Call is also one of my favorites of Spring. Take a look…

During the winter, I’m grateful for the extra heat of the oven after lunch or dinner. I usually leave the oven door open until it reaches room temp. However, come Summer, or even Spring for that matter, I will start looking for alternative ways to cook without having to combat the heat of the oven for the rest of the day. Ceviche may be the simplest of them all. Ceviche is a method of cooking fish or seafood in citrus juice alone –without heat. It doesn’t produce the flaky fish you get from the oven, but if you’re a fan of sushi, you’ll love ceviche. This next Call is all about Aternative Techniques. I can’t wait to see this exhibit…
Check out this Call from L.A. Photo Curator(online)for the Alternative Techniques exhibit. $20 entry, no shipping, plus art publication for ALL entrants. Entry fee is $20. Take a look…

When I can find decent greens, salads are winter food in my house. The secret? Toasted walnuts. This glorious fruit & seed in one shell produces this beautiful aroma when toasted that adds a nutty warmth to the crunchiest of greens. This next Call is offering seeds of its very own to add a little warmth to your art production. There are definitely worse ways to spend seven dollars. Give it a try.

While on vacation recently, I was having dinner in a restaurant only to see the chef come out and clip herbs off a wall planter in the dining room. I have a friend that has installed a decorative green wall in their livingroom. And I know several others that are making vertical gardening plans. It seems planting vertical not only makes the best use of space, but it is more physically accessible for lots of people for whom bending and stooping are not an option. Walls of food, how lovely. This next Call is looking for your work surrounding the idea of walls.

THEME:Walls have delineated nations & cities throughout human history. Walls define what is inside as separate from what is outside, and while this definition . . . invariably includes a defining of identity. Whatever the motivation, walls identify what is within them and what is outside them, placing limits on both. We are now in an era of new walls – walls built on the borders of nations, ideologies, cultural and personal identities. Whether attempting to break through, climb over, dig under, circumvent, use as a canvas, or decorate, artists respond to the walls that confront them.
