ARTIST of the DAY: Eric Rhein

today is a NEW DAY.

I have experienced so much loss in my lifetime.  In the late 1980s & early 90s, I lost dozens to AIDS & a handful with HIV to suicide in the throes of gripping fear.  Beginning in the mid 1990s, the prognosis of those living with HIV+ opened up to a hopeful future as the expectation, not the exception.  Today’s Artist of the Day Eric Rhein creates intimate work that addresses the full scope of emotion surrounding diagnosis and post-diagnosis living.  And, with the approach of World AIDS Day, December 1st, AAAD is privileged to share this work with you. It is almost time for winter cabbage.  I am always grateful to those of our local farmers that have the forethought to plant cold-hardy cabbage in late August so that we can have at least one locally-grown GREEN veggie this winter.  It is neither a high-yield crop, nor is it a high profit crop.  Aside from how delightful it tastes in Irish stew, I am fascinated by the other worldliness of cabbage layers. If you compare the outside leaves to the interior leaves of the cabbage head, you would assume one was some sort of alien mutant version of the other with changes in color, texture AND taste.  This next Call wants your other worldliness.  Take a look…

CURATORS:  Marty Henley has a B.S. in Computer Animation and Design, a M.A. in art with a concentration in sculpture, and is a Professional Illustrator and Game Designer. He has a fascination with organic and inorganic textures and masses, their combinations in the creation of imaginary artistic creatures, and the emotional and psychological connections the viewers have with these creations. Marty is currently an Adjunct faculty member at East Tennessee State University, were he teaches 2D design, 3D design, and Color Theory.

Kevin C. Reaves has a B.F.A and an M.F.A. with a concentration in Jewelry and Metals. He is a traditional sculptor, metalsmith, digital modeler and an avid game and toy designer. Kevin is inspired by retro science fiction, Japanese monster movies, toys, games and 80’s pop culture. His designs have a strong geometric aesthetic and they often deal with social issues and human conditions that primarily focus on Western civilization.

AWARDS:  Up to $500 in prizes

I eat in my car A LOT.  This has always been true.  Once upon a time, those meals consisted of a generous amount of fast food of the drive thru variety.  However, as my tolerance for processed food has waned but my travel for the job has increased, I find that packing food for the road has become more and more common.  Eating a decent meal is no longer an out of bounds activity for the car.  I do pull over to eat, but my seat belt has the permanent aroma of Italian dressing.  This next Call wants to know what YOU consider out of bounds.  This is a great opportunity and a beautiful space…

Fresh sea bass, rainbow beets & marinated mozzarella pearls.  The marinade was herbed with basil from my window sill.  The tartar sauce was accented by chow chow canned by my mother with cucumbers & cabbage grown this year.  The only things not fresh were the olive oil, Himalayan salt & Moroccan red pepper.  Is it Spring? Unfortunately not. just the day after a trip to the farmers market.  In my dream world, I would live within walking distance of a fresh market so that every meal could be this wonderful.  This next Call wants to know what fills you with wonder.  Take a look…

Everywhere I go there are pumpkins.  Big orange jack-o-lantern-style pumpkins are everywhere –shipped in from farms across the state.  Funny enough, while my neighbors (along with most of the country) are obsessed with pumpkin-flavored everything, there are almost NO pumpkins meant for cooking (sugar pumpkins) to be found in grocery stores.  Trust me, you don’t want to make a pie out of a carving pumpkin.  Ick.  This next Call wants to know about your landscape, seascape, etc.  Your “scape” doesn’t have to be orange, BTW…

I spent my childhood as the family cook & server.  I was raised by a single father that couldn’t cook.  I think he realized early on that ANY talent I had in the kitchen would surpass his own.  Even before I could cook with aid of a step stool, I was already setting the table and serving dinner.  I remember serving a plate of spaghetti and tomato sauce to my father, already seated, who quickly discovered you shouldn’t trust a 4 year old to secure a drop leaf table.  Ha.  he called it the “spaghetti incident” until the day he died.  This next Call wants to see how your imagination frames your early memories –food optional.  Handle this theme thoughtfully…

AWARDS: Winner receives review by curator plus online exhibition (front page of site for a month, then archived). Winner also receives Q&A making a substantial PR piece for the photographer. In addition 15% of all artist fees go to the curator’s favorite charity, the Create Now. There is a 2nd place winner and 2 honorable mentions which will show their bio and images archived on the site.

The sight of a train trestle always conjures my cravings for hot chocolate.  My entire life has been spent in residence within about a half-mile of railroad road tracks.  I loved sitting on my front porch in the Fall with a cup of hot chocolate and listen to the trains pass.  That all ended when I moved to Gatlinburg.  Now my cravings for hot chocolate come about through all the standard means–a chill in the air, holiday decorations, a simple sweet tooth.  But, today I found merely the name of the gallery in this next Call sent me in search of cocoa in my cabinet.  This is a wonderful opportunity, don’t miss it…
