Today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, Evla Vlašičová, is a self-taught photographer.  But, after a recent house fire, Evla finds herself without a darkroom.  I find that creative expression is a bit like a trickle of water in that when it encounters an obstacle, it will always find an alternate path –just as Evla has found the art of the linocut.  You won’t find her on social media, but you can watch a great documentary about her creative process here.

gray DAYS

Cold weather can be lovely –in its season. But I crave blue skies. I get a few during winter’s grip; however, as March marches forward, I am growing intolerant of the gray days. My optimistic nature makes me want to find the beauty in the gray.  Imagine my delight to find the work of today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, Barbara Witkowska with all his glorious shades of gray. yours FOREVER

I have spent a lifetime not buying still life work, because it doesn’t usually call to me.  I like my work non-representational, controversial, emotionally raw.  But I keep finding work that defies my notion of what is and is not still life.   Today’s AAAD Artist of the DayKaren O’Neil creates contemporary work with bright hues that only work because of her masterful use of neutrals –grays abound.  (continues below)

simply BEAUTIFUL

Minimalism has so many faces. Some would have you believe it to be stark and cold and gray.  I find it comforting.  I disagree that minimalism must always be bare.  Even intricate design can be simple and clean and appreciable for their design.   Today’s Artist of the Day, Laird Bindrim, shows such beautiful restraint. Such beauty in simply waiting for the unfolding.

“Photography as a medium is immediate. The “taking” of a photograph is measured in fractions of a second.  An art form, that has the unique ability to show us a singular moment.  In this image, the person talking on the phone, my good friend, is calling home to his mother to let her know he’s arrived safely.  Albeit, three thousand miles away from her.  This was the view from the car where I waited and watched patiently as he consoled her.” Laird Bindrim

MILK

I’m not really a milk drinker –never have been.  I use it in cooking and to make cheese, but by the glass is uncommon.  It has in recent years, though, become helpful in the winter months.  In the winter, my writing for AAAD & creating my own art (both visual & performing) keeps me indoors most of the time.  A lack of sunshine for extended periods of time is often accompanied by a general malaise –the winter blues.  Milk isn’t a miracle drug, but the boost of Vitamin D does seem to help.  This next Call wants your perspective on blue.  Take a look…

We consume a lot of extra virgin olive oil, but I have found yet another reason to love this elixir.  It has topical applications too.   I suppose it should occur to me that it would make fantastic lotions and eye creams, but I always thought of it as an ingredient –not for use in pure form.  This next Call is as virginal as my new make remover.  Take a look…

“According to the book, Villa of Mysteries… by Katherine Bradway, the original definition of the term, ‘Virgin’ describes ‘a woman who is one-in-herself, belonging to herself alone, being her own mistress,’ and that the ‘virgin goddesses symbolized women who were complete in themselves and not merely counterparts of male consorts. They were capable of developing their own wholeness through integration, realizing their separate qualities inside themselves rather than through projection onto other persons to whom they were related.’  One in Herself invites artists to present work that expands our ideas of virginity and of what it means to be a woman, “who is one-in-herself.”–from womanmade.org

a happy HEART

It is time for holiday mayhem again. I want to encourage you to just say “no”.  I’m not suggesting you expect your five year old to give up gifts in lieu of a shiny red apple.  But I do want you to give up the undue pressure to make anyone’s holiday perfect, including your own.  I do want to encourage you to use your resources in support of the the people you love and what they can offer or create in this world.  Make it have heart or just say “no”. Today’s Artist of the Day Jan Huling offers the most literal example of that concept I can imagine. Enjoy. (continues below)

Corazon by Jan Huling
“Corazon” by Jan Huling

My 3-dimensional collages combine found objects with surface design, sometimes touching on narrative themes. I’m also drawn to religious and political icons, inspired by a continuing fascination with indigenous or popular culture and world religions. By juxtaposing these icons with an eclectic assortment of objects, the viewer is challenged to consider common images within an altered context. The [construction] process is slow and meticulous, zen-like, with the choice of forms motivating color schemes and iconography.— Jan Huling
