Everyone has a food boundary, a line they will not cross, an item they will not even consider consuming.  For many of my friends, eating something once alive, meat-poultry-fish, is out of the question.  My boundary is a moving target, but I absolutely will not eat things WHILE they are alive.  That’s a thing. Seriously.  Just the idea makes me never want to eat again. This next Call is all about boundaries, real or perceived.  The interpretations are innumerable.

ENTRY FEE: $20 for up to 3. 20% of artist fees go to 2 charities –½ to the curator’s choice of charity & ½ goes to the 1st place winner’s choice.  Douglas Stockdale has chosen Alzheimer’s Orange County.

CURATOR:  Douglas Stockdale (American) is an artist, educator and mentor and the Editor-in-Chief and Founder of The PhotoBook journal.  He has over 25 years of artistic, photographic, editing and curating experience. He has been included in many group exhibitions and most recently awarded an Honorary Mention for the Irvine Fine Arts Center’a (IFAC) All Media 2016 exhibition.  Stockdale is a portfolio reviewer & workshop leader for L.A. Center for Photography.

AWARDS:  The curator chooses 1st place, 2nd place & 3 honorable mentions. The 1st place winner will receive a review by one or more curators including a Q&A about the photographer’s work. In addition, their image will be on the home page for a month. 2nd place & honorable mentions will have their image shown along with their bio, artist statement, C.V. and a link back to their website.

SALES: All sales are conducted between the artist & buyer.  There is no commission.

I have an aunt that still seals jelly with wax instead of heat sealing them with a lid & ring.  She swears it is easier and says her cherry jelly never lasts more than 2 months anyway.  I don’t understand how it is any easier since she has to melt the ways and spoon it over the top of the each jar of jelly. My grandmother lived with Alzheimer’s; her mother lived with Alzheimer’s.  Every lost memory scares the wits out of me. Logically, I know that wasting my lucid years worrying about a feared eventuality of non-lucidity is just the most stupid waste of a lifetime, but some days it gets the better of me.  The work of today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, Kristen Brown, brought me to tears.  It is that blurred perception of reality, that soft focus of memories just out of reach that she captures so well.  Thanks for the perspective.

My days are full.  I am less busy, but more active.  I want to do everything, try everything, create everything, experience everything.  I feel like a constantly churning, epic state of movement.  It is good.  It is where I want to be, in the middle of chaos, both good & bad.  It is an experiential life.  It is shiny and new. Again. Today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, painter Sarah Quick, conveys struggle on an epic scale.  We are never alone.

It won’t come as a surprise to many of you, but I have more than a few foodie friends.  They sort of cover the full range of foodie-ism too –from sous chefs to chili cookoff champions & even those that love to eat but can burn water.  A recent scandal broke out amongst my chili chefs about how many of the local & regional cookoffs have become “popularity contests” with prize money going to the team that could conjure enough of their friends to attend & vote.  Seriously?  Are we cheating chili challenges now?  This next Call has an esteemed artist doing the choosing.  Can you make the cut?  Investigate this opportunity.
