Just Desserts: A personal note.

Just Desserts -- a personal note from Rachel at AAAD!

Yesterday, my husband stood under the open hatch of our car with nitrile gloves wiping down our groceries with disinfectant before they entered the house the way a Southerner would clean-hand-dirty-hand the breading of fried chicken.  Surreal. Covid-19 has touched all of our lives by now.

My husband lost his job in recent days, so I am grateful to HAVE groceries.  I am grateful to have the option to stay home and complete creative work and commissions to keep my mind occupied while so many are fighting to get well or stay well.  Productive distraction has always been a mental health tool for me, and I hope it is working for you.

With so many of us unsure of what lies ahead, it is hard to plan for the future or even find the motivation to want to do any hopeful planning.  But today, I did.  Today I applied for an artist residency… in Italy.  I did it for me, and I did it in honor of all the galleries and arts agencies that have to keep planning for a future that they can’t currently clearly see. I see you. I hear you.  My heart is full for you.

As for AAAD, because my own practice has been growing, I have not tended this site and the weeds are knee-high. I had plans to transition this site over the next year and a half, but it seems like the time to say goodbye is now.  In 2009, this site began as a convenient way to catalog “safe” calls from trusted people and places.  Along the way, I met the best people, made wonderful friends, shared ridiculous food segues and made connections that will last a lifetime.  I will miss talking to you regularly, or even irregularly.

NUTTY dreams

Winter is flying by me.  It is January, and I haven’t even considered a butternut squash.  My food habits are lagging behind, but that can only mean Spring foods will be here before you know it.  Tonight I will dream of soft fresh lettuces and herbs sprouting in my window and Dolly Parton.

Let’s be honest, Dolly Parton has no season.  Dolly is considered the patron saint of the mountains I currently call home.  But I really AM dreaming of her because I am doing a piece inspired by her.  This deadline is only 10 days away, and I am not suggesting that you should produce work to suit a Dolly Parton theme.  But, I do want to invite you to read the call and the juror’s vision of how the theme could be interpreted because I think many of you will find you have work that suits already in your portfolio.

THEME:  Dolly Parton – “the ideas or associations she represents: homespun charm and Appalachian heritage but also camp and celebrity and sexuality; an embrace of Christian traditions alongside vocal and longstanding support of the LGBTQ community; the self-made singer-songwriter in Nashville, country music; gender and identity performance”. Like many of us, he sees Dolly Parton as a “unifying cultural figure… the only celebrity or artist who is equally valued and celebrated by my native community of East TN (in a very homogenous, white, conservative, evangelical setting) and by his current community in Atlanta (in a very heterogeneous, multiracial, progressive, queer setting).” –juror Lockner

JUROR: Logan Lockner, is an Atlanta-based writer and the editor of Burnaway, an online magazine of contemporary art and criticism from the American South. His writing has also appeared in national and international publications including Art Papers, Pelican, Bomb, Photograph, and The Rib, and he recently edited the anthology Stranger, Harder, Brighter: The 2019 Burnaway Reader. In 2018, he was a finalist for the Rabkin Prize for Arts Journalism. He has given talks and led workshops on art writing at venues including the University of Georgia’s Lamar Dodd School of Art and Georgia State University’s Ernest G. Welch School of Art. An East Tennessee native, he holds a BA in English literature from Emory University in Atlanta.

a CITRUS dream

Oranges trigger holiday memories.  So many different holidays, both secular and sacred, are celebrated during the month of December.  And regardless of the holiday, you’ll always find someone whose memory of that holiday is triggered by the smell of oranges.  My mother said that when she was a child, Christmas was the only time her family could afford citrus of any sort.  I have incorporated citrus into my entire sense of winter because it is the only time I can find super sweet clementines.  It is an odd sort of passing of the baton.

Now that most of the holidays have past, it is time to kick it into high gear.  I am attempting another 30 paintings in 30 days. (I don’t hold out a lot of hope of finishing that in grand style.)  Meanwhile I have 3 commissions & 3 shows that I desperately want to enter.  I am no longer a member of the cult of busy.  I don’t celebrate or glorify it.  But I have certainly bitten off more than I can chew. How do you rank your art priorities?  When you figure that out consider this Call.

FLAVOR bombs

I’ve never been a fan of frozen green veggies.  The flavor often reminds me of those little peas in one-dollar pot pies, not entirely natural.  But there is a glaring exception.  Edamame.  I love those little beans.  I like them steamed in their pods, then dipped in a little dumpling sauce (thai chili paste & soy) then sucked from their little green shells.  It isn’t pretty, but I am hooked.

Another perienniel favorite that is all about the color is the BWAC color show.  This is a great space that has grown to become Brooklyn’s largest artist-run organization with over 250 members.  Your dollars have power; spend them wisely.  I love this organization & its mission.

ORANGE you glad?

I’m going to have orange elbows any day now.  I have been craving and eating carrots daily.  In my area, they are usually around a dollar a pound for full size organics and make great chips for hummus, a great boost to Indian dishes, beautiful color in Buddha bowls.  When my son was learning to eat real food, he preferred anything sweet or starchy, naturally, with a preference for carrots and sweet potatoes.  His hands, feet, knees and elbows stayed a hilarious color of orange for a few weeks.  I expect mine to turn any day now, ha.

Continuing with this week’s publication theme, I want to introduce you to Up the Staircase Quarterly if you’ve not yet had the privilege.  Established in 2008, Up the Staircase Quarterly is an online journal of poetry, art, interviews, and reviews. New issues are published every February, May, August & November, unless otherwise stated. And for some of you that write poetry in addition to visual work, UtSQ nominates for the Pushcart, Best of the Net, and Best New Poets. 

They have a 10+ year history and a detailed Masthead for you to research.  So, check out this Call for Entries from Up the Staircase Quarterly (online pubication) for Harrow.  There is no entry fee, but also no payment. Do you have suitable work?

The notion of eating healthy is an abstract one. Even putting ethical concerns aside, there are health benefits (and disadvantages) to embracing vegetarianism, veganism and even raw diets.  Sugar is the devil, but artificial sweetners are differently malicious.  An excessively fatty diet can lead to heart disease but when coupled with an near absence of carbohydrates puts the body in ketosis that effectively treats diabetes in many.  Chocolate and red wine and coffee and kale, all abstractions of a healthy diet.

In art, abstraction takes a lot of forms.  At it’s broadest, abstraction is work that is non-representational. But, that begs the question, non-representational of what?  From that we get non-figurative & non-linear styles that are often included in surrealism, dadaism, cubism, fauvism, suprematism, art informel, neo-plasticism, de stijl & others.    This next Call wants to see all of your abstract creations.  My heart lies with abstraction, although I find reactions to it frustrating.  What’s your experience?  Are you insulated enough not to hear the voices of those that would dismiss the non-representational?  My mantra is ‘process not product’.  Excerise your muscle memory.  Lose yourself in process.  It works for me.  What works for you?

I was on a flight from Chicago to Atlanta recently when the pilot announced it was going to be a very bumpy ride.  I’m not a bad flyer, but it doesn’t stop me from white-knuckling the armrest everytime we drop a few feet.  But sharing my flight was a 3-year-old girl, traveling with her father, all full of energy & curiousity.  Everytime we would hit turbulence and drop a little, she would giggle & laugh & hold her stomach.  For me, turbulence is a chance I’m going to die, for her, it is a stomach drop in the elevator or over the top hill of a rollercoaster.  I will never experience airplane turbulence the same way.  Perspective.

When asked (frequently BTW) about my favorite artist or style of art, my immediate reaction is to reject being backed into a corner by that sort of reductivism, but eventually my answer boils down to “perspective”.  I want to be shown a different way to see, feel or be with something in the world, or not in the world as the case may be.  I’ll take irony, sarcasm, absurdism, realism, surrealism or any other work that makes me better, or worse, for the experience. The wit of Austrian-based artist & illustrator, Alice Wellinger, today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, drew me in immediately.  Take the time to click any of the links in this feature to explore more of her work.  “Beneath her editorial work she develops her personal art, which is surreal,ironic, dealing with the troubles of daily life and childhood memories.” You won’t be dissapointed.

Why do you create?  Do you have a physical response, or is the reaction solely an emotional or cerebal experience?  I have the tendency to drag my feet when I should be in the studio –somedays for a lack of purpose or an unclear direction or fear of failure.  But, I have learned how to put on foot in front of the other and get to IN the studio.  I resoundingly feel the same way every time I get there and paint.  Freedom.  Every time. BREAKFAST eggspert

I miss breakfast.  I have been complaining about being sick of eggs for 10 years, but I’d give anything for an egg sandwich right now.  My residency provides the basics so that we can make our own breakfast –eggs, bread, butter, yogurt, granola.  But, you know what happens when a chef prepares every lunch & dinner you eat?  In my case, I’ve become too lazy to make my own breakfast outside a bowl of granola. *sigh*  This next Call if for your impressions of the light of day… not necessarily what you eat a dawn, ha.  Take a look.
