ENTRY FEE:  €30 (approx. $32 USD)

JURORS:  Artistic merit is the basis for selection. All applications will be judged by a panel consisting of SEA Foundation team members that is complemented by international advisors.

AWARDS:  Funded by SEA Foundation: Studio and private living quarters; Heating, water and electricity; Bespoke mentoring and training; Use of shared kitchen and common residency rooms; WIFI everywhere on the premises; Breakfast; Use of workshop and equipment; Use of art-related library; Interaction with local peers and other residents; Office facilities and printers; PR activities; Free parking (road side) Bike on loan; Stipend of 200 euro (approx $213USD) per week; Production budget 1500 euro (approx. $1600 USD) depending on project costs. After dropping my phone a dozen or more times, it finally died.  When I downloaded everything from the cloud to my new phone (yeah insurance), I left off the food photos. As Winter shifts into Spring, I find my creative inspiration also seems to shift in focus and tone, both physical and metaphorical.  I was intrigued to read about the work of today’s AAAD Artist of the Day Mel Prest and her awakening to the influence of the difference of the quality of light from San Francisco and Brooklyn.  I’m facing a move of nearly 2300 miles; will my work change too?  Does your work change depending on your geographical location?

My grandmother loved fairy food.  She would boil sugar and vinegar together for what felt like forever (15 minutes) and then add baking soda at the last minute.  Magically, it seemed, the concoction would turn almost orange.  Once cooled, it had this beautifully buttery flavor.  Sugar + vinegar = fairy food.  Try it.  In the meantime, this next Call is all about the fairies.  Maybe a fairy kitchen?  This one is creative fun…

Again I contemplate beginnings.  I am a believer in being a professional beginner.  It is never too late to begin again.  When I stumbled across the statement of today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, Tim Hallinan, his “I think that’s where my ideas begin” struck a chord with me.  Maybe I should examine my re-starts and points of departure for patterns.  Or maybe not.

MENU starts

Every meal needs a start point, a launch pad of sorts.  That start is often inspired by a random item that catches my eye in the pantry.  Black-eyed peas become the start for hoppin’-john-inspired tamales.  Corn sometimes inspires chowder while blueberries end up in pancakes.  This next Call offers two opportunities, one to help you launch your project or another to help develop an existing project.  The deadlines if fast approaching so take a look today!

ELIGIBILITY:  Open to all artists

MEDIA:  Open to photography. Work derived from all photographic processes are accepted, as well as mixed media work that is photo-based (only still images are accepted, no multimedia components). 

DEADLINE:  March 3, 2017

ENTRY FEES:  $45 members/ $55 non-members (for 15-20 images for Project Launch or 6-10 images for Project Development)

JURORS:  For Project Launch: Mazie M. Harris is an Assistant Curator in the J. Paul Getty Museum; Christy Havranek is the Photo Director at the Huffington Post; and Dewi Lewis established his publishing house in 1994.  

For Project Development:  Dewi Lewis established his publishing house in 1994. Internationally known, its authors have included photographers such as Martin Parr, Simon Norfolk, Pentti Sammallahti, Paolo Pellegrin, Sergio Larrain, and Anders Petersen as well as many younger emerging photographers.

AWARDS:  Project Launch Grant: $5000 1st Prize, and three $1000 Juror’s Choice awards.  Project Development Grant: one $5,000 award.  In addition to cash awards, each grant offers other rewards.  For details, read the full Calls.
