ARTIST of the DAY: Soteris Sam Roussi

"We All Had Lightening Rods" & "Nero Could Turn on a Dime" by Soteris Sam Roussi
“We All Had Lightening Rods” & “Nero Could Turn on a Dime” by Soteris Sam Roussi

“I have limitless problems to resolve and discoveries unimagined to uncover.” Soteris Sam Roussi

Inspiration is a stranger to the one not its own.  For some it’s divine.  For some it’s academic.  For some it’s nagging & persistent.  For me, it is fleeting, absent sometimes, for months.  Then, inspiration comes bounding back in multiples faster than I can create.  But today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, Soteris Sam Roussi, has limitless problems to resolve.  Someone once told me to use my anxiety as fuel; that isn’t unlike inspiration as a problem to be solved.  I like it.

ARTIST of the DAY: Kristen Brown

Dissonant Frequencies (chalk pastel) by Kristen Brown!
Dissonant Frequencies (chalk pastel) by Kristen Brown

“I am interested in the idea of recollection & how time & moments can feel distorted if one fails to grab hold of any memory landmark.” Kristen Brown

My grandmother lived with Alzheimer’s; her mother lived with Alzheimer’s.  Every lost memory scares the wits out of me. Logically, I know that wasting my lucid years worrying about a feared eventuality of non-lucidity is just the most stupid waste of a lifetime, but some days it gets the better of me.  The work of today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, Kristen Brown, brought me to tears.  It is that blurred perception of reality, that soft focus of memories just out of reach that she captures so well.  Thanks for the perspective.

” . . . my pieces tend to be epic in scope, using all three modes of communication to create my narrative.” Sarah Quick

My days are full.  I am less busy, but more active.  I want to do everything, try everything, create everything, experience everything.  I feel like a constantly churning, epic state of movement.  It is good.  It is where I want to be, in the middle of chaos, both good & bad.  It is an experiential life.  It is shiny and new. Again. Today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, painter Sarah Quick, conveys struggle on an epic scale.  We are never alone.

Sugar is sugar, right?  I don’t think so.  Fried sugar takes me to morning doughnuts in the office.  Melting powdered sugar transports me to Saturday afternoon elephant ears at the flea market.  And spun sugar, spun sugar sends me straight to the state fair standing in line on hard-packed earth waiting for my turn on the Alpine racer.  Each smell is distinct, truly, and each conjures a certain place I hold dear to my heart.  Where is your certain place?  This next Call wants to know.  Explore the possibilities…

Food substitutions have become second nature to me.  I live with & cook for lots of people with food sensitivities, health concerns & philosophical/ethical food issues.  I have to be able to accommodate those folks without advance warning and without blowing my food budget.  Black beans make great gluten-free brownies; bananas work as egg replacement in many desserts & breads.  Lemon zest can be a fantastic salt alternative, & nutritional yeast is a great stand-in for Parmesan.  It isn’t about faking an ingredient; it is about creatively coming up with an alternative texture or taste.  This next Call is all about the creative.  I like this opportunity.  Is this one for you?

It won’t come as a surprise to many of you, but I have more than a few foodie friends.  They sort of cover the full range of foodie-ism too –from sous chefs to chili cookoff champions & even those that love to eat but can burn water.  A recent scandal broke out amongst my chili chefs about how many of the local & regional cookoffs have become “popularity contests” with prize money going to the team that could conjure enough of their friends to attend & vote.  Seriously?  Are we cheating chili challenges now?  This next Call has an esteemed artist doing the choosing.  Can you make the cut?  Investigate this opportunity.

Today has been the hottest day of the year in my area.  Normally I would have hidden indoors for fear of having a heat-triggered, cough-variant asthma attack.  But, I ventured forth and no asthma attack.
