Restaurant wait times make me testy, and if I’m “hangry”, you’d better hope the kitchen isn’t in the weeds.  I have a handful of standard distraction techniques, but my favorite is the restaurant with paper cover tables to draw on.  It never fails that my artistic genius strikes when the only materials on hand are roll paper & crayons.  Let’s call them oil pastels, shall we?  This next Call wants your best drawing.  Show ’em what you’ve got…

JUROR:  Catherine Kehoe received her BFA in painting from Massachusetts College of Art & Design and her MFA in painting from the School of Visual Arts from Boston University.  Kehoe has received the Massachusetts Cultural Council Fellowship in Painting; Ballinglen Foundation Fellowship; Lillian Orlowsky and William Freed Foundation Grant; Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant; Berkshire Taconic Artist’s Resource Trust Grant; Massachusetts Cultural Council Finalist Grant; Blanche E. Colman Award; St. Botolph Club Foundation Grant; and the Sam and Adele Golden Foundation for the Arts Award. Kehoe teaches painting & drawing at Massachusetts College of Art and Design and is the co-founder of Black Pond Studio in southeastern Massachusetts.

AWARDS:  Several cash awards of distinction will be given.

I have picked up the paintbrush again for the first time in many years in preparation for the 30 Paintings in 30 Days Challenge. I had forgotten how physically taxing & the nature of focus that it requires of me. As a result, my work tends to be very serious. I have such respect for artists that bring forth joy on canvas and paper.  Today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, Jenn Ashton aspires to find the belly laugh.  Today, on this day, in this week, month & year, in this decade, I find painting with joy & laughter is among the most noble of pursuits. Thanks, Jenn.

At times I feel my life is laid bare before the world.  Because I don’t have faith in the existence of privacy and an excessive desire to control my surroundings, I have beaten everyone to the punch. I have revealed almost everything to be known about me.  Those few crumbs I have kept for myself are dark corners best left unexamined by most. But if Sima Schloss, today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, is right about love, despair & danger, I have nowhere to hide.  I am oddly relieved.  What are you not trying to hide?

Have you ever looked at a menu so many times that you quit seeing the obvious offerings?  I get stuck in a rut with menus, ordering the same thing over & over again.  Last week I was standing in my favorite Chinese take-out staring at the back-lit menu when steamed dumplings appeared to me as though they had never been there before. How have I overlooked them for months & months?  This next Call is all about the moments surrounding the pose, the overlooked genius.  What are they missing?

CURATOR:  Jeff Alu is a former exhibitions director at the Orange County Center for Contemporary Art (OCCCA) in Santa Ana, CA. During his time there he curated 5 photographic exhibitions, including two dedicated exclusively to cell phone photography, as well as numerous other exhibitions.

AWARDS:  The curator chooses 1st place, 2nd place & 3 honorable mentions. The 1st place winner will receive a review by one or more curators including a Q&A about the photographer’s work. In addition, their image will be on the home page for a month. 2nd place & honorable mentions will have their image shown along with their bio, artist statement, C.V. and a link back to their website.

SALES: All sales are conducted between the artist & buyer.  There is no commission.

I’ve been invited to a black and white dinner.  On first glance, I assumed that it was just a black & white dress code, but, in fact, it is THE MENU that is color limited.  Each of us has been asked to bring a dish.  I am scrounging for ideas.  I have crostini with goat cheese and black olives, pasta with poppy seed infused oil & the ubiquitous black & white cookie or cupcake.  I’m open to ideas.  This next Call wants your black & white one-of-a-kind prints.  Limiting the palate requires you to up your game.  Whatcha got?

Here, Criss works with a diverse group of artists & runs the NY International Miniature Print Exhibition & Competition. She has seen and handled prints from all over the world. 

AWARDS:  All accepted entries will be listed in an online exhibition catalog. Artist should note that 3 logos – CAN’d Aid Foundation, Ball & Metal Recycles Forever will be added to final winning artwork after completion, and artwork needs to use NO MORE THAN 6 COLORS. 

THEME:  Proposal artwork image must convey an environmental theme promoting sustainability and that aluminum cans are “infinitely recyclable” and the most sustainable package.

I have an aunt that still seals jelly with wax instead of heat sealing them with a lid & ring.  She swears it is easier and says her cherry jelly never lasts more than 2 months anyway.  I don’t understand how it is any easier since she has to melt the ways and spoon it over the top of the each jar of jelly. My three favorite restaurants are all in North Carolina featuring American, Spanish & Italian cuisines.  They are all within a few blocks walk of each other.  Is it the education system that produces the culinary prowess? Is it the city that attracts it the creative?  Is it the small farm specialization that inspires clever savory vision?  I don’t know, but this Call hails from the same state.  Investigate this show.

One of my favorite holidays looms near — Halloween.  There are lots of treats I only make on holidays, and meringue cookies are always a Halloween request.  Years ago I made meringue “ghost” cookies, which are just meringue cookies with eyes of blueberries, chocolate chips or currants; everyone was hooked.  Now they’re expected, of course. Light, crispy, ghostly sweetness.  Traditions are funny sometimes.  This next Call is looking for your ghosts.
