Practical 3D food printing exists.  years ago I made some clever segue using Star Trek’s food replicator as a the unthinkable –food printing.  And now, there is the Bocusini, which uses all-natural food cartridges to print solid-ingredient food sculpture.  The first use that pops to mind is EDIBLE, miniature, exact reproductions of human body scans for wedding cake toppers.  Not the first thing that popped into your mind? Is it just me? What a perfectly unreasonable, delightfully impractical application.  This next Call wants your artistic applications, practicality not required.  These calls are rare; don’t miss it…

Check out this Call for Entries from The University Art Gallery at Central Michigan University for Materialized: Juried 3D Printed Art.  Don’t miss an opportunity to exhibit in this unique venue (an A-frame, former chapel built in 1959)Check it out…

*Editor’s Note:  You may download the .pdf HERE or on the CMU site; however, all entries must be done through CaFE, so most of the links in this post go to that listing.

Learn more about the Open Call for Winter 2016 exhibits from Field Projects!DINNER roulette

Grocery lists should be derived from menus, however, I lack the discipline to make a menu every week and the fortitude to endure a grocery trip long enough to sustain a week of daily menus.  As a result, we buy random groceries and the menus are developed based on what we happen to have on hand at the moment.  The advantage is that sometimes we trip across unbelievable recipes just by narrowing the ingredients by availability.  This next Call chooses a theme AFTER receiving the submissions.  How fun is THAT? You don’t have to fit a mold; the MOLD fits you…

Check out this Call for Entries from Field Projects (NYC) for Winter 2016 (Show #34).  $25 entry for all artists & all media. Plus, this entry submits your work for consideration for future shows as well.  Ah, the elusive NYC artist opportunity…

Farmers markets are changing.  They used to be the place to find great fresh produce and unique varietals of mushrooms and herbs.  I love the smell of fresh dirt on fresh food in the summer heat of my car with the windows rolled down.  But things change.  Evolution is as necessary as preservation is.  It doesn’t mean that dirt on the veggies has no place, it simply means squeaky-clean hydroponic lettuce, artisinal soft drinks & ready-made gazpacho should be just as welcome.  Views on preserving the natural within the evolving landscape are sought in this Call.  Spend the time to research this theme…

300 miles from home, and we each wanted a salad on the go.  Google sent me in the direction of a grocery store on the next exit with a huge salad bar.  I came out with a traditional pile of mixed greens, spring peas, boiled eggs, carrots & cucumbers.  My husband came out with segregated little piles of beets, broccoli florets, roasted tomatoes & olives, a wonder of little bites not unlike antipasto.  Two schools of thought, equally valid.  This next Call simply requires a school.  Great exhibitions space…

The burning of food is the only constant in my house.  It isn’t all food, but it is always particular foods –pizza crust, croutons, toast & anything else that is just supposed to just brown on the edges.  I say, “don’t burn the pizza”& Jon huffs in slight offense.  Then, 10 minutes later mumbled cursing echoes through the kitchen.  “Burn the pizza?” I ask.  “Sorry,” he responds.  Then Laughter.  Every time.  It happens every time.  That’s what makes it funny.  This next Call wants to know about your comic relief, but don’t burn the pizza.  Take a look…

“The world is so full of stress and hardship that it seems difficult to retain a sense of balance.  Often, as a photographer, one seeks out projects that are politically based, be it the environment or a statement to raise public awareness.  For our collective consciousness, it seems critical that we stop and ‘smell the roses’.  Based on this sentiment, the orientation of this theme is to seek out some visual levity.  Everyone’s perspective is unique as is their sense of humor. These images can be choreographed or spontaneous but should convey a sense of humor. I am looking forward to sharing a good laugh (or chuckle) with everyone.” –from Mara Zalove

Primarily, Mara’s process tends to be spontaneous.  She has a curiosity about her immediate environment and expresses this by photographing subjects that capture her fascination.  It can be the mundane, atypical or traditional but she seeks to document a uniqueness particular to each subject.  Mara’s award winning work has been widely acknowledged including being represented by bG/BGart Gallery at Bergamot Station & Hale Arts Gallery in Santa Monica.  She was a finalist in the 8th Julia Cameron Award held in Berlin in 2016 as well as having her work included in the 5th Annual Exposure Award display at the Musee du Louvre, Paris-France in 2015 as a part of the Body Collection.

ARTIST of the DAY: Oriol Malet

musical GEN(i)US

I find artist inspiration in unexpected places.  Lately, I’ve had a rash of commissions that have come musicians –from punk to folk.  My brain processes the sound aesthetically and the imagery just appears.  I appreciate the opportunity to exercise my creative brain differently. Today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, Oriol Malet finds much of his motivation in jazz. (continues below)

Red Books (left) & White Cat (right) by illustrator Oriol Malet!

Malet assures us that he does not take his references from graphic design but from literature and music. Oriol’s drawings derive more from the work of Boris Vian or Charles Mingus than from any visual artists.  He has been studying music for five years on the drums he has played all his life. Now, in addition, in honor of his devotion to jazz, he has begun to play the trumpet.

VARIETY

It is almost time for winter cabbage.  I am always grateful to those of our local farmers that have the forethought to plant cold-hardy cabbage in late August so that we can have at least one locally-grown GREEN veggie this winter.  It is neither a high-yield crop, nor is it a high profit crop.  Aside from how delightful it tastes in Irish stew, I am fascinated by the other worldliness of cabbage layers. If you compare the outside leaves to the interior leaves of the cabbage head, you would assume one was some sort of alien mutant version of the other with changes in color, texture AND taste.  This next Call wants your other worldliness.  Take a look…
