I make the best quiche in the world. Not hyperbole. (The quiche pictured here is not of my making.) You can say what you want, but I will not be dissuaded, ha. It is NOT, if fact, what I was hoping for as a ~~supper~~ super power, but it is what I got. My husband has decided that I am allowed to have a big head regarding this one topic; however, I suspect he’s just humoring me for fear his quiche connection will dry up before he learns my secret techniques and/or ingredients. Bwahahahaha.

This next Call indicates No Big Heads. Do I still qualify? Just kidding. I like this next Call because it ticks off a lot of great mileposts for many of us. It is an academic show, a resume builder, and it is in Alaska, a state missing on many of our resumes. The submission size is limited to 12″ or smaller in any direction, so shipping is cheap & easy, AND there are cash prizes.

How do you fuel your early afternoons? I know some of you find it freaky that I’ve not consumed coffee in 20+ years, but I’ve just never acquired the taste. Whether you choose sugar-full or sugar-substituted, soft drinks are a horrible alternative. So, I am taking suggestions. Smoothies are fantastic, and I can make pretty healthy choices that offer a little energy boost. However, to maintain any sort of variety, I’d need a much larger amount storage space. Has anyone tried the the soup & smoothie subscription service? (not a paid post or affiliate link). It might be an interesting way to get variety. Sometimes you just need a little help.

This next Call is MORE than just a little help. Many of you will live outside the qualifiers (living either within 150 miles of D.C. OR non-Americans living outside the U.S.), but on the off-chance some of you might qualify, I wanted to be certain to post this opportunity. The award is invaluable and listed in full below. This is an open call for proposals for solo exhibitions for Hillyer’s 2020/2021 season.

ELIGIBILITY: Hillyer focuses on under represented artists. We accept proposals from regional artists that live within 150 miles of Washington, DC and have not had a solo exhibition in the last three years in a professional gallery or art space OR work from international (non-American) artists that are both living & working internationally.

MEDIA: Open to all media

DEADLINE: September 10, 2019 (by 4pm)

ENTRY FEE: $30

AWARD: A month long exhibition in one Hillyer’s three gallery rooms, Artist honorarium, Inclusion in annual RISE exhibition, previewing selected artists for 2020/21 season; Ongoing support from Hillyer staff, including a studio visit and exhibition consultation with Hillyer’s Director, assistance with exhibition installation and de-installation, review of exhibition materials (artist statement, bio, labels, etc), and marketing and promotion of exhibition. Accepted artists also benefit from our Artist Advisory Program, where our highly qualified Artist Advisory Committee works individually with each artist to help them prepare their exhibitions and establish themselves in the DC-arts community. Eating local is a tiny act that can have a huge impact. It isn’t a possibility for everyone, but I advocate eating local-ish. Chose the food that came from the place closest to you. Sometimes that is all you can do. Your taste buds will thank you, and it does reduce the emissions of the transport to your table. Right now, I can still get cherry tomatoes from not too far away, and I am eating them on everything. This next Call wants to you to explore tiny acts of rebellion. This is a great curatorial theme.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to any practicing artist creating work in the United States, with the exception of those currently enrolled in an undergraduate degree-granting program, is eligible to submit.

MEDIA: All media considered. The gallery is best-suited to displaying 2-D work, but can consider smaller and/or wall-mounted sculptural work & video. No size restrictions, but please note that wall height from ceiling to baseboard is 100”.

THEME: Rebellion. Bhandari invites artists to consider the manifold expressions of rebellion, and how they might be manifested in contemporary art. The exhibition takes its title from a quote in a 2004 essay by Danusha Goska, in which she writes, “when we study the biographies of our heroes, we learn that they spent years in preparation, doing tiny, decent things before one historical moment propelled them to center stage and used them to tilt empires.” The curator will consider work that engages with all types of rebellion: formal, material, political, and otherwise. Artworks engaging with notions of rupture, disruption, and change are sought.

CURATOR: Heather Darcy Bhandari is a New York City-based curator, writer, and arts advocate. Her book Art/Work, written with Jonathan Melber, will be published in its second edition by Free Press this month. Bhandari was a Director at Mixed Greens gallery in New York City from 2000 to 2016 before becoming Director of Exhibitions at Smack Mellon in Brooklyn, New York. Bhandari is currently developing independent curatorial projects, teaches at Brown University, and serves on the board of directors of visual art at Omi International Art Center.

I spent part of this weekend in a Virginia State Park. Every year the park lights their train tunnel and serves hot chocolate & s’mores while musicians echo familiar carols in the background.
