Artists approach reality and its relationship to representation through numerous types of media and with many distinctive standpoints. The term ‘reality’ has been consistently redefined and broadened to include new realms, like the virtual, the personal, the unscripted, the digital, the hallucinogenic.

Non-Fiction Gallery is looking for works that explore the many facets of the concept of reality.

I’m a night eater. 15 years or so ago, I began having a late-night snack before bedtime–a habit acquired while pregnant. I’ve never been able to shake the late night cookies and chips and cereal. We have grown so isolated from night that in much of our culture it has become alien and fearful. NightVisions V seeks to re-open our positive connections to the natural night and to bridge the divide separating artistic from scientific perception, promoting the idea that science and art are two intertwined aspects of human experience.

JURORS: Chicago binder, book & installation artist Karen Hanmer creates intimate, playful works that fragment & layer text and image to intertwine memory, cultural history, and the history of science. Her work weds the ancient act of book binding with the high tech use of the computer to aid her process. The intimate scale and the gestures of exploration required to travel through each piece evoke the experience of looking through an album, a diary, or the belongings of a loved one. However, her works often take the forms of games or puzzles, and many include witty text.

Hanmer exhibits widely, and her work is included in collections ranging from Tate Britain and the Library of Congress to UCLA and Graceland.

My mother believes I am obsessed with food & cooking. She finds it laughable that I have a bowl specific to whipping cream. “Obsessed” is a strong word, possibly accurate, but definitely strong. I do not own a single bowl to which I am well enough attached that I want to be buried with it like Mimbres bowls which have been found covering the face of the interred. Wear marks on the insides of those bowls show they were actually used for more than burial items. That just makes me more respectful of my pottery bowls–lest it ends up covering my face for all of eternity. Hmm. This next Call wants to see how YOU might be inspired by Mimbres potters. Truth be told, when I hear Colorado— specifically, Pueblo, Colorado–I always think of the PSAs that ran between Saturday morning cartoons when I was little. One may characterize industrial as large metal structures, both new and aged, twisting and climbing their way into focus, tightly-wound steel cables, factory floors, and the heavy iron of old railroad trusses. Within the notion of the industrial, however, there is an human emotional attachment connected to the laborer and labor movement, as well. We challenge you to take this subject in any direction and focus you may feel fits the theme.
