CALL for ENTRIES: Hometown

Learn more about the Hometown Exhibit from L.A. Photo Curator!easy being GREEN

I’m still eating local greens even though it is almost November.  Pressure-cooked mustard & collard greens served with a dash of vinegary hot sauce is a rite of passage in the South.  You aren’t really an adult if you don’t love cooked greens, but I’ve never had a taste for anything except creamed spinach, making me feel like the hometown heel.  But, I am newly-enamored of raw greens.  Everyone yearns for Spring lettuce, but my Fall salads of peppery mustard greens highlight my recent menus–still available locally, and they last forever.  What reminds you of your hometown? This Call wants to see your hometown images.  Take a look…

sweet TATERS

I am mourning the upcoming loss of eggplant which goes out of season locally very soon.  But with the end of one season, come the beginning of another.  My beloved sweet potatoes are at their sweetest, and the upcoming frost in late October or early November will make them perfection.  I cannot wait.  Try it.  Buy a sweet potato now, then wait until December or January and try them again.  The difference is astonishing.  This next Call is like the sweet potato, anxiously anticipated and finishes sweet.  Take a look…

Underground farming is a thing now.  I’ve been looking for a “perfect property” for years now.  Something small, affordable, naturally rich soil and easily irrigated.  It is a huge wish list.  But now, there are farmers that are choosing to go underground, create their own soil conditions, or use looped hydroponic irrigation — making double use of every square foot.  It is kind of brilliant.  This next Call comes from underground as well.  Investigate Excavate…

It is the first day of Fall, and I am still nursing my garlic chives from Spring.  I received a gift of a 6″ starter of garlic chives from a farmers market vendor.  And, instead of re-potting, I just sat it in a dish in my window sill and kept clipping and watering.  Miraculously, it is still here –testament to an excellent offering from an excellent farmer.  This next Call is excellent.  Trust me, you won’t regret sending a proposal. Here today, gone tomorrow –ah, transient tomatoes.  Just last week I was lamenting how many ways I could quickly preserve the abundance of tomatoes I brought home from the farmers market.  Now?  I have a handful of tiny Romas left before I have to suffer the grocer’s sad selection of hard, hot house harlots that pass as tomatoes. While traveling around the country, people often ask what food I miss most from home.  The truth is, what I really miss is tea — unsweetened, cold-but-not-iced, sans caffeine.  I drink at least a gallon a day.  I can make it on the road, but it isn’t the same.  Different water, different container, different refrigerator.  When I am nearly home from a road trip, I always think the same thing, “I can’t wait to get home & have a glass of tea” (and see my family and dog, yeah, yeah, I know).  This next call wants to know what “home” is to you.  Take a look…
